Nokian Kazakh Tyre JV Will Export 5%

At least 5 per cent of Nokian’s Ordabasy-Nokian Tyres Kazakhstan joint venture tyre production plant will be exported. According to the Ordabasy Corporation manager in charge of joint venture projects, Adilkhan Umerbayev, some of this 5 per cent will be exported to EU countries. The joint venture will see a 4 million unit capacity passenger car tyre plant constructed in the Central Asian state by 2009, the Ordabasy executive explained in a report published by the Reuters news agency.

The ‘Intyre’ Business

Intyre is a tyre wholesale company that specialises in the export of used tyres. Situated in the centre of Belgium, near the well-known export and shipping centre of Antwerp, the company mainly deals with used car and truck tyres. Unlike other casing and used tyre companies, Intyre does not collect tyres from fitting stations and other dealers, but only buys tyres that can be ‘reused.’ “In this way we try to avoid stocking scrap tyres. We usually inspect the tyres at the supplier’s place and bring them to one of our warehouses where they are sorted by quality and size,” the company told T&A. Intyre has a 4600m² warehouse and a yard of about 8000m². “We usually distinguish two qualities for two different markets. Firstly there are the high-quality used tyres which are sold mainly in Europe. Our second outlet is the African and South American market, which mainly imports the cheaper second hand tyres,” company representatives concluded.

Yokohama Reports on Vietnam Opening Ceremony

Yokohama has released its official statement on the opening ceremony at its new tyre making facility in Vietnam; the ceremony took place at the factory in Binh Duong Province, on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, on February 29, and some 200 guest attended, including Vietnamese government officials, the Japanese consul general in Vietnam, local tyre dealers, representatives from the local subsidiaries of Japanese car manufacturers and media representatives.

Yasuo Tominaga, Yokohama Rubber chairman and representative director of the board, and other executives hosted the ceremony. “We began tyre production 10 years ago in Vietnam,” said Tominaga during his speech. “As the new plant starts operation, our operation in this country will have another momentum for continued growth.”

Maxxis Vietnam Factory’s Output to Increase to 16,000 Tyres Daily

Opened in July last year Cheng Shin Rubber Vietnam Ind. Co. Ltd – the Maxxis factory located in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam – has announced plans to increase its daily capacity to 16,000 tyres. The 200,000 square metre manufacturing plant’s current capacity is 8,000 motorcycle tyres a day, with this figure set to double by the end of 2008. The facility, which employs 265 people and commenced production in February 2007, supplies mainly to the Vietnamese replacement market, with some export sales to other south-east Asian countries. Having developed its position in the region’s aftermarket business, Maxxis is reportedly targeting the domestic OE sector in Vietnam and the surrounding Asian countries.

Indian Tyre Production Up 10%

Tyre production in India grew by 10 per cent in the period between April and December 2007, compared with the corresponding period the year before, reports the nation’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA). This equals an increase in production from 54.8 million units to 60.2 million. And according to ATMA figures the increase for car tyre exports was notably higher.

The export of passenger car tyres grew by 54 per cent during this time, and truck and bus tyre exports by 9 per cent. The average monthly export of tyres increased from 430,028 to 500,543 units, an April-December growth of 16 per cent. Total export figures for April to December were 4.5 million units, up from 3.9 million the year before.

Another growth area has been in the OTR tyre segment, where monthly production figures have increased by 15 per cent.

Yokohama’s Vietnam Facility Inaugurated

According to an article published in the Thanh Nien News, Yokohama Rubber officially inaugurated its new Yokohama Tyre Vietnam facility in Binh Duong Province on February 29. This year output at the plant is expected to be around 1.3 million tyres, which will supply both the local and export markets, including Japan. The six hectare site will employ a total of 500 workers, the Vietnamese daily reports.

In 1997, Yokohama Rubber established Yokohama Tyre Vietnam Company as a joint-venture company with Southern Rubber Industry Company (Casumina) and Mitsubishi Corporation, and has manufactured bias tires for light trucks and tires for motorcycles. Yokohama Rubber plans to integrate this company with Yokohama Tire Vietnam Inc.

US Firm Invests $25 Million in Bangladesh Tyre Plant

Leviathan Global Corporation, a US-based company, has signed an agreement to invest US$ 70 million in a tyre production plant and 50 megawatt power plant in Bangladesh’s Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone (KEPZ). According to initial reports $25 million will be invested in building a tyre production facility that will employ 300 local people. According to local new sources, the agreement was signed on 2 March 2008 at Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) complex.

Goodyear to Invest $1 Billion Dalian, China Tyre Plant

Goodyear is reportedly close to investing over $1 billion in the construction of a tyre manufacturing facility near Dalian. The mayor of Dalian, Xia Deren, told the Reuters news agency that the city’s government had finalised an investment plan and would sign an agreement shortly.

According to the report, Goodyear is planning to build a plant in the Beishan area and hire more than 2,000 employees for a factory that would sell both domestically and for export. Goodyear representatives told Tyres & Accessories that they were aware of the reports, but didn’t give any further details.

India’s ATMA Calls for the Elimination of Rubber Duties

Days after Indian tyre manufacturers and their representative body, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA), called for a reduction of duties on natural rubber imports into the country, ATMA appears to be calling for duties to be scrapped entirely. According to India’s The Hindu newspaper, lobbying for an elimination of tariffs has been paired with lobbying for the government to encourage the export of value added products rather than raw rubber.

Ceat Still Confident of Attracting Partners

Much was said during the course of 2007 about Ceat’s plans for new greenfield facilities, particularly the company’s unsuccessful attempts to secure a joint venture partner for a truck and bus radial plant. The new year sees this pattern continue, and on February 8 India’s Hindu Business Line reported that the company is seeking “international players” as equity partners in two new greenfield projects.

Vice-president for Sales & Marketing, Arnab Banerjee, told the paper that Ceat is in talks with several such companies, and as part of the deal the Indian manufacturer would hold a majority share in any venture. “We should be able to finalise the partners soon. The production should start within a couple of years,” he said.

Birla to Establish Sri Lanka Carbon Black Plant

Sri Lanka has been named as the location for the Birla Group’s new carbon black facility. The company, one of India’s largest corporations, looks likely to invest RS 4.8 billion (US$120 million) in the plant, which will be located in the country’s south, within the Koggala Export Processing Zone.

“The matter has been under discussions since last year. Aditya Birla Group is likely to go ahead with its proposed $120 million investment on the carbon black plant in Koggala Export Processing Zone, in southern Sri Lanka,” an official was quoted as saying. In a statement Birla said it expects to be granted the clearance to proceed subsequent to a recent meeting between Sri Lankan Minister for Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion Sarath Amunugama and senior Birla Group executives.

Argentina Drops Retread Import Ban

The Argentinian legislature recently relaxed its ban on imported used and retreaded tyres to allow the importation, under certain conditions, of retreads classified under NCM 4012.11, 4012.12, 4012.13 and 4012.19.

Argentina established a prohibition on the importation of used and retreaded tyres classified under NCM 4012.11, 4012.12, 4012.19 and 4012.20, with the exception of tyres used on airplanes, in August 2002. According to reports, the government of Uruguay subsequently challenged this prohibition with respect to remoulded tyres and a South American Common Market (MERCOSUR) dispute settlement panel determined that Argentina’s action was inconsistent with MERCOSUR requirements.

Bridgestone Prices on Way Up in North America

North America market prices for Bridgestone and Firestone brand tyre lines, plus all Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire (BFNT) associate brand tyres, are to increase by up to 8 per cent. These increases, which commence March 1, 2008, will apply to OE, replacement and export market tyres in the passenger, light truck, TBR, OTR and agricultural tyre segments.

“The continuing unprecedented upward spiral of energy and raw material costs makes this action necessary,” said Asahiko “Duke” Nishiyama, vice chairman and president of BFNT. “This unrelenting escalation of costs is simply not a situation that can be managed through the enhanced efficiencies and increased productivity that we are continually implementing at all levels of our company. As a result, we have no choice but to implement this price increase.”

Former PTNA Boss Mannino Announces New Venture

The former president and CEO of Pirelli Tire North America, Gaetano “Guy” Mannino, is drawing upon his years of sales, marketing and manufacturing experience with the Italian tyremaker in his latest business venture. Mannino, whose quarter-century tenure at Pirelli ended in October 2007, has announced the formation of Verdek, a consulting and trading company with corporate headquarters in Rome and offices in Connecticut and Tuscany.
