Pirelli-equipped Citroën C4 Wins Acropolis Rally

In an Acropolis stage famed for its punishing surfaces, Sebastien Loeb claimed his fifth victory in seven events to regain the lead of the Drivers’ championship.

After the event, Loeb was full of praise for his C4 WRC, reserving particular commendation for the performance of his Pirelli Scorpion tyres: “We drove with the idea of preserving the car and the tyres on an incredibly rough surface. The Pirelli Scorpion tyres were able to resist stages that were truly a massacre, so the overall conclusion is very positive – particularly considering that these tyres do not have anti-deflation mousse and that they have to adapt themselves to a very wide range of different surfaces.”

AAA Baseball Gets Yokohama Nod

Yokohama Tire Corp. will continue its relationship with US sports teams as sponsors of two AAA baseball teams – Scranton Yankees and Memphis Redbirds. According to Yokohama, each team will provide signage, hospitality events and product displays, as well as special promotions and in-store ticket giveaways and in-stadium contests.

The baseball sponsorships follow partnerships with three NBA teams, three NFL teams and two college football programs. (Tire Review/Akron)

Bosch Wins GEA Certificate of Appreciation

Barrie Flemming, Bosch Garage equipment product manager, received the GEA Certificate at the Garage Equipment Association (GEA) Dinner on 16 April. Bosch was presented in appreciation and recognition of valuable contributions to BEN – Motor and Allied Trade.

Cooper Tire to Sponsor W.E.Rock Crawling Event

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has announced that it is partnering with the World Extreme Rock Crawling Championship Series (W.E.ROCK) for a competitive off-road event known as the W.E.ROCK All-Stock Nationals presented by Cooper Tires. The All-Stock Nationals will take place 26-28 September 2008, in Hannibal, Missouri.

“Cooper is proud to partner with W.E.ROCK, the world’s largest and most respected rock crawling sanctioning and promotions body, on this first-of-its-kind event for professional and amateur rock crawlers,” said Dave Craig, Director of Advertising for Cooper Tire. “This new event was the result of a close collaboration between Cooper and W.E.ROCK, and is a perfect venue to showcase our Cooper Discoverer tyre brand.”

New Dunlop Has “Star” Tread

In the US, the Dunlop brand has released the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, a summer DOT-approved street tyre with a special tread compound for dry grip. According to Matt Neidert, Dunlop’s performance tyre brand manager in the US, the new tyre features the “Star Spec” tread compound, which helps a performance car’s initial dry grip during sanctioned amateur driving events, such as autocross and other track events hosted by car clubs. The tyre replaces the Direzza Sport Z1, which was introduced in August 2007.

The new Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, now available, features a directional tread pattern with circumferential grooves, and provides “a consistent contact patch on the pavement for a smooth feel and seamless transition.” The tyre is available in 20 sizes covering 15- through 18-inch wheel diameters. Yokohama Official Tyre for Two US Circuits

Yokohama is now the official tyre of both Sebring International Raceway and Road Atlanta. Yokohama Tire Corp. signed a three-year deal to sponsor the tracks. As part of the deal, Yokohama signage will be placed in key areas of both tracks, including the crossover bridges and other camera-view areas. Yokohama also plans dealer tie-ins in each local market prior to major events and hospitality programs. Yokohama is already a sponsor of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif. Toyo Launches New Soft Compound Tyre

The latest product from Toyo Tires is the new Proxes R888 SG Soft compound racing tyre, which has been specifically designed for use at Sprint/Hill climb or Short Tarmac speed events. Built on the immensely successful R888 casing design, this new tyre features a super soft compound mix for extra grip, short heat build up and super responsive steering.

Bridgestone Motorsport Announces F1 Tyre Specifications

Bridgestone, the official tyre supplier to the FIA Formula One World Championship, has announced the compound allocations for the Potenza tyres to be used in the first nine rounds of the 2008 season. The tyres for 2008 feature minor changes from those of last season, changes Bridgestone says were made in the interests of safety. The allocations for the first nine races of the current season are the same as used in the respective events in 2007 aside from the Bahrain Grand Prix, which will now use the medium and soft compounds, as opposed to the hard and medium compounds in 2007.

SEMA Launches New Charity Effort

SEMA has established the SEMA Cares Committee, charged with identifying and creating additional opportunities for its members to enrich the lives of children nationwide. “SEMA members have a long history of giving back to our communities by assisting children and families who require a helping hand,” said Joel Ayres, who will be serving as the SEMA Cares Committee Chairman. “The SEMA Cares Committee will allow us to be even more effective, as we work as a collective group and pool our resources.”

Among the goals of the SEMA Cares Committee will be to establish an even higher goal of charitable activity by creating new opportunities for SEMA members to give back through more events and to identify new charities to support. (Tire Review/Akron)

Pirelli’s gravel tyre developed for use in the WRC championship has gained FIA approval for use this year. The new tyre, known as the Scorpion, is designed to deliver strong performance on a range of gravel surfaces and features an asymmetric directional tread pattern that is intended to provide solid lateral grip as well as traction when accelerating and braking.

The Scorpion’s design also reflects changes to tyre regulations introduced this year. “The 2008 FIA WRC regulations state that anti-deflation mousse cannot be used,” comments Pirelli. “So this year’s gravel tyre has been considerably strengthened in order to resist cuts, abrasions and punctures from sharp rocks, potholes, and other such obstacles.”

Pirelli Claims Top Spot in Tire Rack Tests

(Tire Review/Akron) Pirelli Tire North America said its P Zero topped a recent Tire Rack test of “max performance” tyres, besting two other unnamed UHP tyres. The testing was conducted at Tire Rack’s test track in South Bend, Indiana, using 2006 BMW325i E90 saloons with new 225/40ZR18 tyres mounted on 18×8-inch wheels.

The evaluations, said Pirelli, included cornering, lane change, acceleration, traction, responsiveness, handling and drivability “normally only encountered in abrupt emergency avoidance maneuvers or competition events.”

Maxxis Success in 2007 Formula Drift Series

Maxxis once again proved to be the choice of champions when sponsored driver Chris Forsberg put in a strong second place finish at the final event of the 2007 Formula Drift series – in Irwindale, California on October 13 – to clinch second place overall. Twenty-four year old Forsberg, who used Maxxis MA-Z1 Drift tyres throughout the season, headed the field at events in Atlanta, Georgia and Sonoma, California, and consistently finished in the top 16.

“We’re super-excited to be second in the series. We were hoping to be in the top three. The final round had a lot of tough match-ups. It was a very exciting event overall,” he said. As always, Forsberg was full of praise his MA-Z1 Drifts, adding: “The tyres performed perfect. They had a lot of grip in the back and down by the wall, which is a critical point; we try to run close to the wall without crashing.

Toyo’s Team Members Win at World Championship Off-Road Races

In the US, Team Toyo Off-Road drivers competing on Toyo Open Country M/T tyres had a great Labour Day weekend during the BorgWarner World Championship Off-Road Races at Crandon International Raceway in Wisconsin. Considered one of the biggest events on the 2007 Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road Racing calendar, Team Toyo Off-Road drivers Curt LeDuc, Dave Waldvogel and Mike Vanden Heuvel all won races over the course of the weekend.

After this big Labor Day weekend, the Super Stock Truck class continues to have a nail-biting championship-points battle between Team Toyo Off-Road drivers Ben Wandahsega and Dave Waldvogel. During Saturday’s race, Waldvogel won his race driving his Bendix/Toyo Tires Chevy truck, while Wandahsega finished an uncharacteristic fifth place in his Forest County Potawatomi/Toyo Tires Chevy truck.

Cooper Discoverer STT Provides Off-Road Options

Cooper Tire’s rugged Discoverer STT 4×4 tyre opens the door for vehicle choice in the adventure 4×4 market, according to UK off-road driving centre, Kankku.

The Lake District-based centre fits the Discoverer Super Traction Tread (STT) on its fleet of Land Rover Defenders, traditionally the vehicle of choice for adventure off-road driving. But it also operates a fleet of Mitsubishi Shoguns on its corporate and private events, and says that is only possible thanks to the Cooper rubber.

“A 4×4 vehicle on Cooper Discoverer STTs can easily upstage the vehicles you might reasonably expect to see in this kind of environment,” said Kankku’s Nick Fieldhouse. “The toughness and extreme durability of the tyre makes it perfect for our operation, which runs almost every day of the year.

“Our regularly-used fleet of Shoguns proves that the STT means you can now consider 4x4s other than Defenders for this type of driving, which opens up the activity to a huge number of new 4×4 owners.”
