Bridgestone lifts Bulldog production, invests in UK retreading as duties drive demand

It’s now more than two months since the European Union applied anti-dumping duties on a range of truck and bus tyres manufactured in China, and during this time Bridgestone has observed a “strong uplift in demand” within the UK retreading industry. With the market “showing signs of a significant upturn in fortunes,” the company behind the Bandag retreading brand believes a “continued investment in its range of products is beginning to reap dividends.”

Tyre tariffs: Aeolus relocating production to Prometeon plants

Aeolus Tyre Co., Ltd. has emphasised its continued commitment to European markets. In a statement, the Chinese tyre maker describes its progress with the Aeolus brand within Europe as a “remarkable” achievement and stresses that the “unique position” it has claimed within the market will continue despite the introduction of anti-dumping duties. To facilitate this, some Aeolus tyre production will be relocated outside of China.

Pirelli: Anti-dumping duties don’t affect us

Although Pirelli Tyre Co, Ltd. is named as a company whose products (together with those from Aeolus Tyre Co., Ltd., Chonche Auto Double Happiness Tyre Corp., Ltd. and Qingdao Yellow Sea Rubber Co., Ltd.) will be charged anti-dumping duties of 64.13 euros per tyre under anti-dumping Regulation (EU) 2018/683, the tyre maker states it is not affected by the new regulation as it doesn’t produce commercial vehicle tyres.

MWheels to discuss unchanged CV wheel inspection law with DfT, DVSA

MWheels will meet with the Department for Transport (DfT) and DVSA to understand why the EU Roadworthiness Directive, and its section on CV wheels, has not been incorporated in UK law. The DfT’s draft Heavy Goods Vehicle Inspection Manual, due to come into force from 20 May 2018, shows “no major changes” to section 06, Road Wheels and Hubs. This is despite the British firm’s eight-year campaign, which saw major input in both Periodic (2014/45/EU) and Roadside (2014/47/EU) documents. Both were expected to be fully adopted by all 27 Member States as part of the EU’s drive to create standardised inspection procedures.

European retreading market loses further ground to imports

A quarter of all truck tyres currently sold in Europe are imported, and as the manufacturers of these products don’t operate production facilities within the region, the tyres aren’t reported in Europool. The extreme nervousness these truck tyre imports are causing some corners of the market can be seen in the European Commission’s anti-dumping proceedings against bus and truck tyres originating in China, which began last summer. Usually the free trade-specialised EU favours other technical or qualitative restrictions to entry into the European market, such as the EU tyre label or other standards, yet as figures from the ETRMA frighteningly illustrate, such measures have no effect on the pressure placed upon European retreading by cheap Far Eastern tyres.

Natural Rubber classified a ‘critical raw material’ by EU

The importance of unimpeded access to natural rubber has been acknowledged by the European Union, which has added the raw material to its Critical Raw Material List. the decision was made with the support of the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA), which contributed to the process of revising the List. The association has since welcomed the inclusion of natural rubber in the 2017 List, which is valid for three years.

Anti-dumping – EC to investigate Chinese tyre imports to Europe

The European Commission has issued notice that it will initiate an anti-dumping proceeding focusing on imports of truck and bus tyres originating in the People’s Republic of China. The Commission is taking this course of action as a result of a complaint received on 30 June by the “coalition against unfair tyres imports,” a group representing the interests of manufacturers who account for more than 45 per cent of all new and retreaded truck and bus tyre production in the European Union.

Tougher EU standards to reduce vehicle emissions
