Pirelli is celebrating a successful 2023 season in European rally after Mads Ostberg claimed victory in Hungary in his Citroen C3, shod with Scorpion rally tyres. Pirelli is the only tyre-maker of the four suppliers to the European Rally Championship to have seen victories claimed on all surfaces through the season, with its runners achieving podium finishes at every meeting. Hayden Paddon had already claimed the title with two races to spare on Pirelli rubber. 55 of 106 special stages were also won on Pirelli tyres.
Michelin is the first recipient of the Winning Tyre of the FIA European Rally Championship, an initiative introduced to highlight the achievements of the ERC’s four official tyre manufacturers, Hankook, Michelin, MRF and Pirelli. The ERC Winning Tyre accolade goes to the manufacturer whose products equip the victorious crew at each event.
The FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) will include four tyre manufacturers in 2023, following the announcement that Hankook is producing a tyre range homologated for the series. The ERC sees the addition of Hankook tyres alongside those from Michelin, MRF and Pirelli as a move that “reinforces the strength” of the championship.
Three different cars using Pirelli’s Scorpion gravel tyres took the podium places on Rally Poland, the latest round of the European Rally Championship. The Skoda Fabia of Mikolaj Marczyk led the Hyundai i20 R5 of Tom Kristensson and the Ford Fiesta Rally2 of Ken Torn. Each driver made the most of the reliability of the Pirelli Scorpion. Marczyk took the lead after Hyundai driver Nils Solans – also running Pirelli tyres – encountered problems on SS6, while Kristensson and Torn finished 13 seconds ahead of the fourth-placed crew. Pirelli said the highly variable conditions of the roads in Poland put the Scorpion tyres to a challenging test.
