Michelin Says “Da” to Russian Language Guides

Russians wishing to spend their hard earned roubles abroad can now draw upon expert help when visiting Paris, thanks to the launch of Michelin’s first Russian-language guide. The Cyrillic version of the Michelin Paris Green Guide is one of a number of guides, maps and atlases now on sale in bookshops across Russia. Apart from the Paris Green Guide, the range on offer is at present solely available in English – however Michelin states it will release four further Russian-language Green Guides before the end of the year.

Analysts say Euro Auto Industry up 5%

An analyst’s note from Deutsche Bank suggests that vehicle registrations across Europe could be rising for the second month in succession. Conversations with the industry have led the analyst to predict a rise of 5 per cent, with particular strength in Germany (up 35 per cent) and Italy (up 14 per cent. The UK (+2 per cent) and France (no change) have remained steady, while the other country to have initiated sales through scrappage schemes, Spain is down 14 per cent. The not concludes that Deutsche Bank expects the market to be 3 per cent lower in quarters three and four in 2009, following a 3 per cent decline in quarter two and a 16 per cent drop in quarter one.

Bosch Extends its ‘ESPerience’ Website

Bosch has enhanced and extended its Electronic Stability Program (ESP) consumer website. Introduced by Bosch in 1995, ESP is a vehicle active chassis braking safety system that can prevent a vehicle going into a potential skidding situation. ESP is, comments Bosch, three chassis system technologies in one – Antilock Braking (ABS), Traction Control (TCS) and ESP. Michelin to Launch First 295/60R22.5 Multi-Purpose Tyre

In August 2009, Michelin will introduce the market’s first 295/60R22.5-size multi-purpose tyre – the Michelin X MultiWay XD for truck drive axles. With the new tyre, comments Michelin, drivers of large-capacity commercial vehicles in Europe will be able to travel safely on all types of road and in all weather conditions.

The tyres that equip large-capacity and car-carrier trucks are confronted with a range of challenges, the French tyre major notes. They must be able to travel thousands of kilometres on motorways in summer and winter, access loading areas on national and smaller roads, and sometimes make city deliveries on traffic-congested streets. At the same time, trucking companies need to be able to carry heavier loads, reduce delivery times and optimise costs, while maintaining superior safety performance.

New Car Market Begins to Pick Up

The market for new passenger cars in Europe (EU27 and EFTA markets) displayed a modest increase of 2.4 per cent to 1,461,859 units in June on the back of scrappage incentive schemes in operation in more than ten EU Member States. June’s figures represent the first market increase in 14 months. Accumulative figures for the first half of 2009 show an 11 per cent drop in European new car registrations compared to the same period in 2008, with a total of 7,425,762 new cars registered compared to 8,346,828 the year before.

Snap-on Gains WDK Training Accreditation

Snap-on Equipment equipment recently became the first garage equipment manufacturer to gain independent, third-party authorisation to provide training courses for mounting and demounting run-flat and UHP tyres at its European Competence Centre in Pfungstadt, Germany. WDK, the Association of the German Rubber Industry, provided the authorisation, which included certification of turntable and roller-type tyre changers.

Delticom Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Dunlop Lands Moto2 Tyre Deal

Dunlop has secured the contract to supply tyres to the new Moto2 class, which gets underway in 2010. The company will supply 3.75 x 17-inch front and 6.00 x 17-inch rear tyres to the series that replaces the 250cc World Championships.

Speaking about the three-year deal, Dunlop Motorcycle sales and marketing director Europe, Middle East and Africa, Sharon Antonaros, said “We’re excited about building on the expertise gained over fifty years of continuous participation in Grand Prix racing to continue our development of racing tyres and then taking the technology to our road tyres.”

Hankook Recalls 3 RA08 Light Truck Tyres

Hankook Tire has is recalling a number of RA08 van tyre sizes in what the company describes as a “precautionary measure.” The sizes affected are: 185/75R16C, 205/75R16C and 215/75R16C produced at the company’s plant in Hungary between April 2008 and June 2009. According to the company, no other tyres produced in Hungary are subject to this action. Tyres supplied as OE to Ford’s Transit are said to similarly un-affected as they are produced at the company’s Deajon plant in South Korea.

Consumers who use the affected tyres are asked to immediately contact their local tyre dealer. Further consumer information will be offered at Hankook Tire Europe’s website (www.hankooktire-eu.com). Alternatively, consumers and the trade are being directed to contact their national representatives.

Mazda Models Get Toyo Tyres as OE

Toyo Tire & Rubber has won OE fitment for its tyres on the new Mazda Axela, which is also known as the Mazda 3 outside of Japan. The Toyo J48 in size 205/55R16 91V and Proxes R32 in size 205/50R17 89W will be placed on the car in Japan and Europe. The North American version will get the all-season Toyo A20 in size P205/55R16 89H and the all-season Toyo A18 in size P205/50R17 88V. (Tire Review/Akron)

Bridgestone Reminds Holidaymakers to Check Their Tyres

Millions of Europeans are hitting the road for their summer holidays, and many will get underway without even undertaking the most cursory checks on the condition or pressure of their vehicle’s tyres. If they understood the drastic effect such negligence could have on their journey, they’d probably take the five minutes or so needed for a tyre check. Bridgestone has released a few statistics that should encourage motorists to do just this.

As part of its Think Before You Drive road safety campaign, conducted jointly with FIA Foundation, Bridgestone has carried out more than 100,000 tyre inspections in Europe since 2005. This programme has identified that 26 per cent of drivers run on under-inflated tyres. Almost all of these motorists are unaware of the adverse consequences this can bring to their safety, to their fuel budget and to the environment.

Cooper Introduces New Discoverer 4×4 Generation

Cooper Tire Europe has announced the launch of the second generation of its Discoverer Discoverer range of 4×4 tyres, the UK-built Discoverer M+S2. Replacing the existing Discoverer M+S product, the new tyre is designed to offer superior grip and braking ability, particularly in wet, snowy or icy conditions.

With nearly a third of all road accidents happening on wet, snowy or icy road surfaces – a figure provided by the DfT in its 2007 Road Casualties of Great Britain report – having a tyre that grips the road is imperative, says Cooper. The Discoverer M+S2 has a new directional tread pattern to attempt to achieve greater grip in the slippery conditions described. It is also stud-able and the optimised offset stud pattern help maximise grip on icy roads, when studs are fitted.

Infinity Displays Two New Products to Bologna Attendees

Situated in a prime location in Hall 20, the Infinity stand at the recent Autopromotec 2009 was, the company believes, one of the show’s busiest, displaying the general confidence and determination to push the brand forwards in Europe.

As well as showcasing two new products – the Infinity 059 and the Infinity 200 – there was a comprehensive series of distributor update meetings. All the main European and International Infinity distributors visited the stand and were welcomed by the Infinity team from Europe and Dubai.
