Marangoni Claims Leadership in Russian Retread Segment

Marangoni Retreading Systems reports that it is a strong position to capitalise on the initial recovery of the Russian truck market. The company reports that reliable estimates on the retreaded truck tyre sector, in the absence of official figures, show a market volume of around 150-200,000 tyres, half of which are retreaded locally and the other half imported, mainly from central and western Europe.

Marangoni Retreading Systems, which has been operating in the Russian market for over a decade, has made significant investments in developing important local retreaders, apparently achieving good results quickly.

Yokohama Opens Store at Nurburgring

On Saturday 27 March 2010 Yokohama Europe GmbH opened the "Yokohama Store" at the Nurburgring in Germany, one of the most well-known racing circuits in Europe. President Osamu Mikami of Yokohama Europe GmbH and many representatives of local media were present at the opening ceremony on the 27th. Yokohama Rubber is the first Japanese tire manufacturer to open a directly managed shop at the circuit.

Avon Motorsport Manager Roger Everson Announces Retirement

Roger Everson, sales and marketing manager with Avon motorsport, the competition division of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe, has announced he will retire in March, after 27 years working for the company.

Scrappage Scheme Ends

The last chapter in the extremely well documented scrappage scheme draws to an end today with car manufacturers calling last orders on Tuesday 30 March and the government releasing figures relating to the effects of scheme. Apparently the scheme, which offered around £2000 to motorists in exchange for them trading their car in for a new one, has helped some 400,000 customers to buy a new motor since it began.

The latest figures show that scrappage contributed to approximately one fifth of all new car registrations since the scheme started. Half (54%) of scrappage buyers surveyed had never bought a new car before and more than half (56%) of those surveyed said they would not have bought any vehicle at this time if the scrappage scheme had not been introduced.

Fire Brigades Choose Bridgestone

Increasing numbers of UK fire services are choosing Bridgestone UK for their front line appliances. According to the company, fire services in Essex, West Sussex, East Sussex and Hampshire have all selected Bridgestone products due to the “enhanced performance, and improved life of their tyres.” Many fire services are changing to use the popular R249 truck tyre. Bridgestone UK’s popularity is said to be still on the rise, with more UK fire services either testing or using the company’s tyres.

Bridgestone Extends EU Road Safety Charter Agreement

The European Road Safety Charter was established by the European Commission in 2004 with the aim of halving the number of road deaths within the EU. The following year Bridgestone Europe signed an agreement to support the charter, and has now opted to extend its support for a further three years. Bridgestone says its new charter agreement will be backed by a proactive programme of tyre safety checks to educate motorists on the importance of correct and regular tyre maintenance.

Alliance Tire Raises Prices 4.5%

Alliance Tire Europe BV has announced that it will implement a price increase of around 4.5 per cent effective 1 April. All shipments after 1 April will be made at the new price. According to the company, Alliance has taken the decision “due to the rising of raw materials,” and “has no other alternative but to increase prices by an average of 4.5 per cent”. As a result some sizes and products will face a smaller increase, while others could increase above 4.5 per cent. “We are in the same situation as all other tyre manufacturers”, Manuel Pintado, president of Alliance Tire Europe BV commented.

UK Brokerage Chosen for Spain, Portugal Tyre Warranties

UK insurance broker Garratts has landed a 700,000 euro contract to arrange tyre warranties for car dealers in Spain and Portugal. The Preston based broker was appointed by Spanish broker Sanz & Domecq to provide an annual warranty policy covering 411 workshops and 180 garages across the two countries.

Toyo Prices to Rise on May 1

Escalating raw material costs have prompted Toyo Tire Europe to raise its tyre prices. As of May 1, prices for tyres in all product categories sold throughout Europe will increase by an average of five per cent. The company states that increases in individual sizes may vary by market, however.

Halfords/Nationwide Autocentres Increase Sales 5%

Just a month after Halfords bought Nationwide Autocentres for £73.2 million, the new owners have reported that like-for-like sales have grown 5 per cent since the buyout. According to the company, the integration plan is “progressing well” and the programme of rebranding the centres under the Halfords moniker will be rolled out during 2011.

David Wild, chief executive officer, commented: “Halfords retail performance continues to be robust, with full year earnings now anticipated to grow by approximately 25 per cent. The acquisition of Nationwide Autocentres, completed during the quarter, logically extends our successful service proposition and provides a further opportunity for future growth.”

Avon’s Motorsport Season Opens at Easter with British GT Championship

Avon is looking forward to another season of motorsport, opening on Easter weekend as the title sponsor of the British GT Championship. The brand is the title sponsor and sole tyre supplier of the prestigious Championship for the fifth consecutive season, with cars built by manufacturers such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lotus and Porsche set to line up on the grid this year.

Conti Announces Industrial Tyre Price Rises

As of April 1, 2010, prices for aftermarket Continental industrial tyres will increase by up to eight per cent in Europe. The company says this measure has been taken in response to “extremely sharp rises” in the cost of raw materials, especially natural rubber, and pronounced increases in freight costs, dating back to the second half of 2009. The company comments it had previously managed to keep prices for industrial tyres in the aftermarket business stable since April 2009.

Bridgestone: 150 Million Blizzaks – and Counting

Bridgestone reports the reaching of a noteworthy milestone during the past year – the production of the 150 millionth Blizzak studless winter tyre. The brand was introduced in 1988 and the name is applied to passenger car, light commercial vehicle and 4×4 tyre ranges manufactured in Japan, Europe and Turkey. The range was introduced into North America in 1992 and Europe in 1994. The 100 millionth tyre was produced in 2004, and last year more than ten million Blizzaks were produced worldwide.

Test Praise for Hankook Radial RA14 Wet Performance

Hankook is the recipient of more tyre test kudos, this time from Europe’s largest specialist recreational vehicle magazine, Germany’s Promobil. The publication has released the results of its annual tyre test (Issue 4/2010), and has awarded first place to Hankook Radial RA14. The Promobil evaluation examined ten brand-name tyres currently available in the popular 235/65 R16C size, which is suitable for vehicles including the VW Crafter and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (the second of these was used as the test vehicle during the comparative evaluation).

Continental to Raise CV Tyre Prices

On May 1 the cost of Continental’s replacement market commercial vehicle tyres will increase by an average of 5.5 per cent in Europe. Upon making this announcement, Continental stated that by raising prices it is “thus reacting to the massive rise in raw material prices, above all for oil and natural rubber, since the second half of 2009.”
