Galaxy and Dynamic to Merge Forming GPX

Galaxy Tire & Wheel and Dynamic Tire Corp have agreed to merge. As a result a new company, GPX Tyre & Wheel, will be formed. According to an official statement the new company is expected to record sales of more than $300 million in 2005 and holds assets in excess of $100 million. “The will provide the solid foundation and critical mass necessary for GPX Tire & Wheel to become one of the leading global players in the agricultural, industrial, commercial and off-the-road tyre markets,” the statement says. For the time being the two companies will operate in parallel as separate entities. The merger is expected to be completed by the end of this calender year.

The ‘Market Leading’ CV Show and ATS

The Commercial Vehicle and Automotive Trade Show held last month, comprised of over 600 exhibitors, spread over 90,000 square metres and 11 halls making this year’s event the largest show ever held in the UK. Home to the UK’s road transport and automotive aftermarket businesses there were more car, van, truck, trailer, bodywork and road transport suppliers at the exhibition than at any other business to business show in Europe over the last year.

Dave Garratt Becomes EGEA Treasurer

Dave Garratt was appointed as treasurer of the Brussels based European Garage Equipment Association (EGEA). The news was announced following at the association’s recent General Assembly meeting held in Bologna on the 20 May. Mr Garratt’s appointment is seen as an important step for the industry as it ensures a close and ongoing association with the European market. Dave Garrat, also chief executive of the Garage Equipment Association (GEA) in the UK said: “The EGEA, which is based in Brussels, plays an important role in lobbying and advising the European Commission. This appointment shows that the EGEA value an input from the UK and proves that the GEA is fully committed to supporting its members in Europe.”

Michelin’s Confident AGM

Executives at Michelin’s AGM have reiterated their target of achieving at least the same operating profit margin in 2005 as they did in 2004, despite lower volumes in the first half of this year. At the same time the company appointed Michel Rollier as new managing partner.

Goodyear Launches £2 million Ad Campaign

Goodyear has spent in excess of £2 million on launching its new RunOnFlat campaign to the UK media. The manufacturer has also hired a Hollywood director to deliver its first television advertising campaign for ten years.

Motorists will be able to view the new TV commercial from the 1st June. The advert was created by Leagas Delaney, London, and shot in Australia by Alex Proyas, director of last year’s Hollywood blockbuster I Robot. The advert will run in 16 European countries and kicks off an advertising campaign which includes TV and print advertising, public relations, and web and in-store activities in Goodyear’s 500 Hi-Q fitting centres.

Yokohama Reports Sales Increase

(Akron/Tire Review) Publishing 2005 financial results, Yokohama Rubber Co has reported that it achieved net sales of approximately 419.8 billion yen (£2.1 billion), up 4.5 per cent from the year prior. The company also reported favourable overseas sales in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, while replacement market sales in Japan were also up. Yokohama’s Tire Group sales increased 6.7 per cent, to 307.9 million yen (£1.5 billion). Yokohama’s management projects a 6 per cent increase in net sales, a 14.5 per cent rise in operating income, and a 1.6 per cent increase in net income in the 2006 financial year. Group operating income grew 19 per cent to roughly 18.2 billion yen.

Alcoa Gets Patent For Rim Flange Wear Product

(Akron/Tire Review) Alcoa Wheel Products said it has been granted a US patent on its Dura-Flange aluminum wheel surface treatment, a product that the company said: “Guards against excessive rim flange wear on commercial vehicle wheels.” Alcoa said it developed the treatment “trucking applications where loads are heavy and prone to shifting, such as logging, tanker and heavy hauling.

Unipart Profits Up

The Unipart Group of Companies, one of Europe’s leading privately–owned distribution and logistics businesses, has reported sales for 2004 of £1.064bn (2003: £525.8m) and a net operating profit of £25.4m (- £1.3m). After tax, interest and other charges, the Group reported a profit of £26.3m (£0.9m).

Kwik-Fit For Sale

Following its acquisition by British private equity firm, CVC Capital Partners, Kwik-Fit has put itself up for sale in a move that could raise as much as £800 million. CVC is reported to have sent information on the company to “a string of prospective buyers.” Although the names of the these companies have not been officially released, Reuters speculated that the list would include all the leading buyout firms including Cinven, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, BC Partners, Permira and J P Morgan Partners. The sale is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.
