Bridgestone Corp. reported first quarter 2006 sales of 704.7 billion yen, up 16.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2005, resulting in a 4 per cent bump in quarterly net profits to $239 million.
The company said that strong global sales helped offset heavy increases in raw material costs. Bridgestone said its tyre sales in Japan rose 10 per cent for the quarter, while sales in the US increased 25 per cent, and sales in Europe increased 13 per cent. Sales elsewhere jumped 37 per cent, Bridgestone said.
Beginning this year, Bibendum the Michelin Man will once again serve as Michelin’s spokesman in the UK and Europe. Still funny and playful at 108, he is returning to centre stage in Michelin’s advertising — after several years’ absence — in a multi-media European campaign which started in late January 2006 and extending throughout the year. In the UK, the Michelin Man will be featured on radio, in magazines and newspapers, and on the Internet and in sales outlets.

Retreading specialist Kraiburg Austria will showcase its extensive product and service range on its exhibition stand at the Reifen 2006 exhibition in Essen. Following the motto “Always the right tread”, Europe’s no. 1 producer will present a representative cross-section of its full range at the show. This will include treads from the established Kraiburg range for all applications, as well as the new premium Kraiburg plus range. The Austrians also have a few specialised products in the range, such as retreaded rally, karting and lawn tyres.
GPX International Tire Corporation has appointed Kedar D Murthy as vice president of global OEM sales. Mr Murthy will be based in GPX’s headquarters, in Malden, Massachusetts. Kedar brings 18 years of experience in global sales and marketing, international business development, operations, eBusiness and finance.

Well-known Dutch wholesaler Inter-Sprint is to jointly market and distribute Double Coin truck tyres across Europe. Tyres & Accessories has learnt that Double Coin manufacturer Shanghai Tire and Rubber Company is to open a European subsidiary called “CMA Europe.” CMA and Inter-Sprint will share marketing duties while the Dutch company will be responsible for distribution. The European agreement does not include the UK or Ireland where Double Coin truck tyres are distributed by Kirkby Tyres.
Pirelli has extended its initial three-year collaboration agreement with Maserati for a further two years. So far the accord has helped both parties achieve success on and off the racetrack. From a motorsport perspective this means constructors and team titles in the 2005 FIA-GT championship with the Maserati MC12 on P Zero Racing tyres, the numerous victories of the Modena two-seaters entered by a number of teams in international and national championships including the Italian GT series title and the great success among both participants and spectators of the Trofeo Maserati, the fourth of which began in early April at Monza.

Staff from three First Stop dealerships have been treated to a VIP tour of one of Bridgestone’s major tyre manufacturing plants in France as part of a campaign to further increase knowledge within the network.
Representatives from Airway Tyres in Colchester, and the Lodge Tyres depots in both Walsall and Talke, near Stoke, were given a guided tour of the factory in Béthune, northern France. They received an in-depth insight into the whole tyre manufacturing process, from the combination of natural and synthetic rubber all the way through to the detailed and thorough quality control of the final product.
In his address at Goodyear’s Annual Shareholder Meeting, chairman and CEO Robert J. Keegan said the tyremaker remains committed to the strategic direction implemented three years ago, describing the business as an “aggressive marketing company.”
“Innovation, quality and a sharp market focus continue to drive Goodyear in the right direction,” he said. “We believe we are taking the required steps to drive improving future performance.” Keegan cited the company’s important financial milestones in 2005, including record sales, net income double the 2004 level, and growth in its business segments.

Bridgestone Europe NV/SA has announced that it will increase prices on all of its tyre brands and categories. It will apply to all replacement channels in all European countries. The increases are between 3.5 per cent and 5 per cent depending on the product category, and are scheduled to take effect from 1 June 2006.
