A Leader in its Field

Goodyear has sold over 700,000 of the Optitrac tyre, making this one of the most popular farm tyre ranges on the market. Goodyear Optitrac first arrived on the European farm scene in 1999, with the introduction of the DT812, 70 series tyre, and was complemented by the DT818, 65 series variant, in 2001. The range was further extended by the introductions of the DT824 volume range, DT830 super volume range and DT800 in row crop sizes. The Optitrac family was further extended at the end of 2004, with the DT806, 85 series tyre, making a total of six products in the range.

In 2006 another family member was launched. Named the Goodyear Optitrac R+, this extended the performance capabilities of the range further, by providing even greater traction and carrying higher loads at speeds over 40 mph. This tyre was designed for the next generation of faster operating, compact, high-performance tractors over 150 hp.

Yokohama Chosen for Most Powerful Golf Ever

Volkswagen is releasing the most powerful Golf in the marque’s 33-year history, and has selected Yokohama to handle the hatchback’s phenomenal power. The Golf GTi W12-650, created to celebrate the annual GTi festival in Europe and 30 years of the Golf in the UK, features a twin-turbocharged 650bhp version of the W12 engine normally found in the Phaeton.

The massive engine is engine mounted amidships in the Golf GTi W12, behind the front seats. Power is channelled to the rear wheels via a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. The six-litre W12 engine is usually rated at 450bhp but the addition of two turbochargers raises this by 200bhp and gives the Golf a staggering 553lbft of torque.

GPX Appoints New Head of Supply Chain

GPX International Tire Corporation has announced the appointment of Glenn D. Booth to the position of global director of supply chain management, a role he commenced on June 4. He joins the company from Coca-Cola Enterprises, where he served as a regional director of logistics.

“GPX is delighted that Glenn has joined our growing team and we look forward to harnessing his supply chain, logistics and consulting experience to foster and enhance our supply chain and logistics operations” stated Bryan S. Ganz, chairman of GPX. “Through Glenn’s extensive background, he will help GPX to facilitate and implement a positive solution to our current and future supply chain management challenges.”

Delphi Release New Brake Catalogue

Delphi has launched a new catalogue for 2007 covering its full range of brake pads, shoes, discs, drums and fitting accessories for the independent aftermarket. The catalogue contains details of more than 3600 part numbers including 400 parts which are new to range. Delphi’s extensive offering provides coverage of over 95 per cent of the European vehicle parc.

Following customer feedback into the design of the catalogue, the latest version boasts a number of new features designed to make it easier for customers to identify the right part first time. In the main vehicle application section of the catalogue, thumbnail sized illustrations of both pads and shoes are shown at the end of each double page spread. Full size illustrations of pads have been retained within the catalogue and appear towards the rear.

Conti Increases Production at Romania Plant

Continental intends to boost production capacity at its Timisoara plant in Romania by around 8 per cent, to over 13.5 million tyres per annum. Capacity in 2006 stood at 12.5 million units, and the German tyremaker will utilise a 15 million euro investment budget to bring about the planned increase.

During the past seven years 50 million tyres have been produced at the Timisoara facility, with production capacity on average increasing by a million tyres per year. “Less than seven years after production started in Timisoara, in the wake of over 170 million-euro investments, we now produce up to 40,000 tyres a day,” stated Martin Kleinbrod, general manager of Continental Automotive Products.

Continental opened its new Timisoara facility, the manufacturer’s most modern in Europe, in 2000, and since that time the company has opened three tyre and automotive component factories in western Romania.

New Touring Tyre from Michelin North America

Michelin North America has released a new addition to its range of offerings for luxury vehicles – the Primacy MXV4 touring tyre. Intended as a replacement for an existing tyre with the same name, the new Primacy MXV4 is available in 32 sizes, ranging from 185/65R15 to 225/60R18 in H-speed rating, and 195/60R15 to 245/45R18 in V-speed rating.

According to Michelin, the new tyre features a unique shape and design that provides long lasting and even tread wear and a tread that reduces vibration and road noise. “The new Michelin Primacy MXV4 tyre delivers an unprecedented and uncompromising combination of benefits that significantly boosts wear life without sacrificing handling performance for a wide spectrum of automobiles and driving styles,” claim Michelin officials said. The new tyre is intended for the North American market only and not available in the UK or Europe.

Continental OE for New Ford Mondeo and Transit SportVan

When Ford’s all-new Mondeo finds its way into new car dealerships in late June, chances are it will be sporting a smart set of Continental tyres as OE. In late May the German tyremaker revealed that a total of eight sizes have been approved by Ford, including one model featuring SSR runflat technology. Continental’s emergency spare wheel will also be available on some models.

Ford has given the go-ahead for five 16-inch tyres in the ContiPremiumContact range to be made available for the Mondeo as well as two tyres suitable for 17″ and 18″ rims from the ContiSportContact family of products. And the selection of the Conti SSR runflat (in size 235/45 R 17 97 W XL) as the eight tyre option for the Mondeo is significant, as it marks the first time this technology has been employed on a Ford Europe product.

Michelin Investing Heavily in Poland

This autumn Michelin will launch production of new rubber mixes at its manufacturing site in Olsztyn, Poland. This comes as part of a £172 million investment program that also incorporates the construction of an adjacent logistics and warehousing centre. This investment program, Michelin’s largest in Europe, will create more than 500 new jobs.

The Olsztyn site first opened in 1967 and was incorporated into the Michelin Group in 1995. It is currently Michelin’s only facility in Poland.

Avon OE on Car that Recreates Racing’s Golden Age

Avon tyres has secured its third OE contract with a British sportscar manufacturer within the space of six months. Avon parent company Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Ltd has announced the signing of an agreement with Peterborough based manufacturer Vanwall – a postwar racing marque given a new lease of life in the 21st century. This latest deal comes on top of recent contracts with Connaught and Morgan.

Avon’s Turbo Steel 70 has been confirmed as the official tyre for Vanwall’s V12-powered Grand Prix Racer. Starting at £50,000 per car, and built to each customer’s individual specification, the Vanwall GPR V12 is a road legal, two-seater racing car styled on the classic 1950s Formula One cars bearing the same name, made famous at the hands of motor racing legend, Sir Stirling Moss.

Leading Drift Drivers Choose Nexen

Nexen tyres have been chosen as the competition tyres for two of Europe’s leading drifters Eric O’Sullivan and Martin French. The first Prodrift meeting of the series took place in Ireland at the end of April and Eric O’Sullivan achieved first position. After the race, Eric said: “The Nexen 3000 definitely aided the car’s performance and played an important role in the win. The grip from the tyres was so good that on the final lap the speed recorded as I entered the first corner was 86mph.”

Pirelli Tyre Romania Reports 2006 Turnover of £12.7 million

Pirelli Tyre’s operations in Romania ended the 2006 year having recorded a turnover of 60.36 RON (£12.7 million) and losses of 18.49 million RON (£3.9 million). The division has a capital share of 77.16 million RON (£16.3 million). However, while on paper the company’s 2006 appears less than illustrious, late October saw the opening of a new tyre manufacturing facility near its existing steel cord plant in Slatina. The establishment of this new plant, which specialises in the manufacture of high performance tyres and employs about 450 people, required an investment of £115 million.

Goodyear Poland’s Premio Chain Grows

Goodyear Poland’s recently formed Premio retail chain has opened some 45 new outlets in the last eight month. According to the Warsaw Business Journal, the aim is to increase this to 80 by the end of the year. The news follows reports in February that Goodyear had committed to investing over US$100 million to upgrade the UHP production capabilities of the plant over the next 3-4 years. Debica, Europe’s biggest tyre plant according to some, was acquired by Goodyear in 1996 as the company sought to tap the fast-growing Polish market and develop a production base for exports. Exports accounted for 75 per cent of Debica sales last year.

Beru – Quarter Figures Show Mixed Results

Tire Safety System (TSS) manufacturer Beru AG has posted total sales revenues of 116.8 million euros for the first quarter of the 2007 financial year, nearly equalling the sales revenues (117.4 million euros) of the prior-year period. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) reached 14.8 million euros, slightly down from last year’s 17.3 million euros and equivalent to an operating margin of 12.6 per cent.

The company’s Electronics and Sensor Technology division maintained its status as growth area during the quarter, with first quarter sales revenues of 38.8 million euros recorded during the quarter, an increase of 16.6 per cent over the previous year. Beru report that their TSS system was largely responsible for driving this growth.

New Winter Range for Interstate

Netherlands based Interstate Tire & Rubber Company has announced the introduction of a new range of exclusive brand Interstate winter tyres for the 2007 season. Called the Interstate Winter IWT-2, the new tyres are produced in China to a European design and intended for European conditions, and to maximise the range’s Europe-wide appeal Interstate will release the Winter IWT-2 in two silica compound variations, a softer compound for Nordic regions and a firmer ‘West European’ compound.

Being designed with winter conditions in mind the range feature three-dimensional sipes on both the inner and outer shoulders, and these sipes are laid out in an interlocking format that prevent the sipes from sticking to each other when subjected to lateral forces, thus increasing dry road stability and handling while providing grip in snow and ice conditions. The centre tread is laid out in a v-shaped pattern, which Interstate claims serves to direct water from the tread area into the wide circumferential grooves positioned on either side of the centre tread.

NTDA Joins Right to Repair Strategy Group

Following on from the Right to Repair Seminar organised by the NTDA at Brityrex in Manchester earlier this month, the NTDA have been invited to join the powerful R2RC Strategy Group which will run the UK end of the Europe wide campaign. The Strategy Group is made up of representatives from the SMMT Aftermarket Section, the Automotive Distributive Federation and the Independent Garage section of the Retail Motor Industry Federation and other members of the Automotive Aftermarket Liaison Group

The main task of the group will be to manage the UK end of the campaign which will include lobbying of MPs in Westminster and MEP’ in Brussels.

Representing the NTDA will be the newly elected Vice Chairman of the NTDA David White of Kwik-fit who commented: “This issue is one of the most challenging for our sector and I look forward to representing the Tyre and Fast fit interests within this group which has a lot of work to do over the next few years”.
