Advans Face Varied Race Demands, Comments Watanabe

With a widely differing range of tracks already visited during the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and its Formula Master partner series in 2008, official tyre supplier Yokohama reports it faces a huge challenge when designing tyres for both series. Although the ADVAN tyre production for both formulae is very similar, the design and development process has to take into account an enormous amount of variants, resulting in very different tyres.

The Eagle Has Landed…in the UK

Wheel alignment has traditionally been one of the most challenging daily jobs in the workshop, mainly due to the costs of employing specialised personnel available and the risk of losing valuable time after discovering that a vehicle’s alignment does not need to be adjusted. Due to these factors, alignment is often only carried out when visible signs, such as uneven tyre wear or steering wheel misalignment, indicate bad tracking.

Drifting With Federal Tires

Drifting has seen a rapid growth in popularity in recent years in United Kingdom, and the 2008 European Drifting Championship attracted large numbers of competitors and fans to the Knockhill Circuit in Scotland. The racing action was reported to be top notch all weekend during the 17th and 18th of May, providing an exhilarating atmosphere for spectators. For Federal Tires, these events, in which British duo Ben Broke-Smith and Phil Morrison performed spectacularly, help the company draw closer to the growing enthusiast market for high performance tyres.

The weekend drew all manner of petrol head out of the woodwork, lured by the smell of burning rubber as it were to two days of burnouts, cruising and admiring the metal on display. Phil, from Driftworks, showed off his Skyline’s paint and body work, seizing much attention.

European Metal Recycling Extends ATSE Contract to Scotland

ATS Euromaster has extended its contract with Europe’s largest metal recycler, European Metal Recycling, into Scotland to include a fleet of 15 commercial vehicles acquired through recent acquisitions. Like the company’s Salford-based fleet, these trucks will benefit from daily tyre inspections carried out by mobile service vans from ATS Euromaster’s truck centre in Bellshill.

Craig Fisher, European Metal Recycling’s Transport Manager for the North West and Scotland, said: “Our fleet operates across 70 sites in the UK where there is a lot of scrap metal, so daily inspections to check the condition of tyres ensures that the fleet is always ready for work the following morning. It has also helped to reduce our tyre related breakdowns at the roadside by 25 per cent, which equates to a huge saving in unexpected vehicle downtime,” he adds.

Sport Maxx Tyres Help Hollamby in Time Attack

Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup driver Shaun Hollamby, took on one of the most breathtaking circuit phenomenons of the year performing in the Time Attack at Circuit Park Zandvoort, Holland. Time Attack is said to be the next ‘big thing’ in automotive lifestyle and brings full throttle excitement to the track. It puts drivers under pressure with one lap against the clock.

Street legal cars are let loose on tracks across Europe to achieve the fastest lap possible and the best from each track meet in the final later in the year. Shaun Hollamby, a race winner, in the Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup was invited to race Milltek’s Audi R8 at the legendary race circuit in Holland. The R8 proved to be quite a different experience from Shaun’s usual winning car the Sport SEAT Leon Cupra 2.0T. Only the Sport Maxx tyres were the common element to the two cars.

Pirelli Foundation to Study Eco-Tyres With Shandong University

The Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation and the University of Shandong in Jinan (China) have signed a research agreement that will see the two parties cooperate on research into “the new generation of ecological tyres.” University researchers will work together with Pirelli Group’s R&D department in China with a view to producing advanced low rolling resistance tyres. Pirelli Group has been involved low rolling resistance research for some culminating in the production of “eco-compatible” products such as the new “Cinturato”, presented in Europe at the beginning of 2008.

The Italian-Chinese agreement also includes two joint research initiatives, which aim respectively at realizing more consistent compound mixtures and the study of low-temperature tyre vulcanization.

Goodyear EM Tyres Accredited by Caterpillar

Caterpillar Inc has awarded Goodyear with its “Supplier Quality Excellence Process Certification” bronze certificate in recognition of the quality of its earthmover tyres. The award recognises the achievement as well as the “know how” of Goodyear with regard to the quality of their earthmover tyres and their ability to supply to the customer.

Goodyear earthmover tyres are produced in Luxembourg and distributed for use across Europe. The Luxembourg plant produces a top quality product for use as Original Equipment for Caterpillar and other leading manufacturers as well as replacement tyres for the construction industry.

Bridgestone Expecting Deflated PCR Sales in North America

Declining sales of new cars in North America is expected to be reflected in lower passenger car tyre sales, says Bridgestone. The tyre major expects North America sales in this segment to fall 5 per cent this year. Company CFO Koki Takahashi added that the company expects OE tyre sales in North America to fall 14 per cent in 2008 and those in Europe to fall 3 per cent.

Ireland’s Tyre Industry Marks Passing of Tom Tierney

Obituary – Tony Ryan

We were saddened to learn of the death of Tony Ryan, who was Managing Director of Apaseal before retiring due to ill health in 2000.

Tony Ryan – a Chartered Account – joined Apaseal from Wilkinson Sword in 1972 and handled the difficult financial environment of the 70s, enabling Apaseal to remain a key player in the tyre maintenance market. On his appointment in 1983 to managing director he,alongside a dedicated group of management, set about the task to enhance the company’s main objective to provide a complete service for the tyre distributor with the strategy “everything to do with the wheel other than the tyre and rim.”

Nexen “Providing Safety, Stable Driving All Around Europe”

Nexen Tyre, a company at the forefront of the Korean winter tyre market, believes that it has the overseas reputation not only for the company’s popular non-winter tyres, but also for its winter tyres.

The Korean company is attempting to penetrate Europe’s winter tyre market with its Euro-Win, Winguard, Winguard-SUV and Winguard 231 lines. The firm is also announcing for this season its brand new ultra-high performance winter tyre called the Winguard Sport, which, the company claims, “is ready to be the first runner of the premium UHP winter tyre both in the domestic and overseas tyre markets.”

Delticom H1 Revenues Continue Growth

Internet tyre retailer Delticom has released news that, in spite of the general market slowdown, Europe’s number one e-tailer continues its impressive record of growing revenues. The first six months of fiscal year 2008 have seen the company storm to 121.5 million euros, preliminary figures reveal, showing a proportional increase of 19.1 per cent on last year’s H1. The news displays an impressive Q2 for Delticom, having returned a 9.4 per cent rise in Q1.

Even the chilly early-spring’s assault on the summer tyre market hasn’t been able to dent Delticom’s progress because the May heat in Western Europe and sales in other regions continued to lift figures, thanks to the international nature of Delticom’s e-commerce. In fact, sales in other regions accounted for 65 per cent of H1 revenues, allowing the company headroom in markets where units could not be shifted as quickly.

Outsourcing to ContiNetwork Brings Transporter Significant Savings

Purfleet, Essex-based logistics company, FP Young Transport Limited has been experiencing significant savings and greater ease of use following the company’s decision to outsource the management of its fleet’s tyres to ContiNetwork partner TAB Tyres.

Since handing over its tyre administration to TAB, FP Young’s progressive shift to Continental’s rubbers is resulting in longer tyre life, resulting in fewer tyres being fitted and vehicle downtime being reduced. The structured tyre management process based on the five-stage ContiLifeCycle is ensuring that optimum life is obtained from every tyre through specifying the correct tyre from the outset and then re-grooving and re-treading when the time comes.

India’s MMTC Closer to Chinese Tyre Imports

India’s state run MMTC trading company appears to be progressing with its plan to import and market Chinese commercial vehicle tyres in India. According to reports, the company has already identified a US-based tyre manufacturer with a production site in China as the possible source of tyre imports on an ongoing basis. The initial volume order is anticipated to be placed in September or October.

The US based company has not been specifically named, however sources say the firm first entered China in 2006 and recently acquired a production facility there. The company was incorporated in 2005 through a series of mergers and also has production bases in Europe and North America.
