Euro Car Parts to create 1500 jobs over the next 18 months

Following the collapse of Unipart Automotive last week, competitor and former front-runner in potential rescue talks, Euro Car Parts, has announced that it plans to create 1500 jobs over the next 18 months. The fact that this figure is roughly equivalent to the entire size of the former Unipart Automotive workforce should not be overlooked. Neither should the obvious question – how? With this and the Unipart collapse in mind, what looks clear is that, compare with the first half of this year, the automotive aftermarket will be a significantly different place.

BEN offers ex-Unipart Automotive employees support

Following confirmation that Unipart Automotive has entered administration with job losses totalling 1,250 BEN (the automotive industry benevolence charity) is offering to support to those affected.

The charity has contacted KPMG, the appointed administrators, and hopes that through them, and its own communications, it can ensure that those who have been displaced know BEN is on hand during this potentially difficult period.

New bidders enter into Unipart Automotive rescue talks

While there hasn’t yet been a clear outcome of the Unipart Automotive rescue talks, new bidders have entered into takeover discussions. Sources close to the talks have confirmed to Tyres & Accessories that buyout firm R Capital, which is known for an earlier rescue of the Little Chef chain in 2007 (the café business was sold to Kuwaiti investors last year) has now entered the Unipart Automotive rescue talks.

William Blair in favour of a Euro Car Parts rescue of Unipart Automotive

Investment bank William Blair said it views a potential rescue deal between Euro Car Parts and Unipart Automotive, if it were to happen, as “a good fit”. However, these words were written in an investor’s note dated 10 July and so far there hasn’t been any more information on how the talks with Euro Car Parts, Better Capital and at least one other party are progressing as yet.

Andrew Page rejoins Parts Alliance

On Tuesday 8 July Andrew Page Group (one of the top three independent UK aftermarket suppliers), announced that it is rejoining The Parts Alliance, the major UK and Ireland buying and distribution group. The company’s decision to rejoin came after an absence of six years. It also came the same day that Unipart Automotive confirmed that it had put the administrators on standby in the event that it would not be able to negotiate a rescue deal with the at least three parties it has been talking to.

Are Unipart Automotive rescue bids in?

Sources are reporting that the Unipart Automotive rescue bids have been received and we are likely to hear the outcome in the next 24 hours, but these claims could not be officially verified. Earlier in the week separate sources close to the negotiations told Tyres & Accessories they were expecting talks to conclude towards the end of the week, which would seem to fit into the same timeframe. With managers saying they were hopeful talks could be wrapped up in 36 hours at the beginning of the process on 8 July, the fact that almost 10 days have now passed suggests things are becoming increasingly urgent. It is also putting pressure on its loyal workforce. However, the official line from shareholders Unipart Group and H2 Equity as well as one of the three bidders Euro Car Parts has been a unified “no comment”.

‘Loyal’ Unipart Automotive staff in quandary while takeover talks continue

We know Unipart Automotive is in need of a buyer. We know at least three companies including Euro Car Parts and Better Capital are talking to the owners about a takeover/rescue plan. But a lot remains unknown and so Unipart Automotive’s roughly 1600 employees are facing a great deal of uncertainty while the talks continue causing some to consider their employment options moving forward.

UAN: independent automotive aftermarket worth £2.5 billion

According to detailed research undertaken by United Aftermarket Network (UAN), annual UK automotive aftermarket distributor turnover is now estimated to be worth £2.5 billion. The research shows that three companies (Euro Car Parts, Andrew Page and Motor Parts Direct) collectively share around 27 per cent of the total market. In terms of buying groups, three companies including UAN account for over 40 per cent of the total market.

Euro Car Parts opens third national distribution centre

Euro Car Parts has opened a new 258,000 square foot warehouse facility on Bonehill Road in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Located close to the 600,000 square foot National Distribution Centre (NDC), which opened in 2010, and 15 miles from the collision repair parts facility at Swadlincote, which opened in 2012, ‘Bonehill’ is designed to “future-proof” the business as it drives towards its 165 plus UK branch target by end 2014.

Euro Car Parts continues rapid growth

Euro Car Parts opened 11 new branches, in the second quarter of 2012, continue on its rapid growth trajectory. Delivering on its promise to make Euro Car Parts (ECP) the biggest aftermarket supplier in Scotland, ECP opened two new branches in June alone – Edinburgh East and Perth. The doors also opened at new stores in Borehamwood and Telford during June, with these four branches combined, creating over 200 new jobs. The company opened 17 new branches between Jan – June 2012.

Euro Car Parts chairman to meet UK PM

Euro Car Parts’ founder and chairman Sukhpal Singh Ahluwalia will meet with the UK’s prime minister and chancellor of the exchequer when he attends a “reception for business leaders at 10 Downing Street in mid-September. Ahluwalia has invited comments from the garage trade prior to his meeting with David Cameron and George Osbourne, stating that he will use the occasion to discuss key issues such as the proposed increase in the gap between mandatory MOT tests.

Euro Car Parts Not For Sale Despite Reports

Representatives of Euro Car Parts, a leading British aftermarket distributor, have rebutted reports over the weekend that the business is up for sale. According to reports posted on thisismoney.co.uk, the founder of Euro Car Parts, Sukhpal Singh had appointed adviser Robert W Baird to conclude a sale could see him receive “more than £200 million” from a total price of up to £250 million. This report pointed out that Sukhpal Singh started the company with £5,000 in an outlet in north London and has recently seen profits triple to £17 million compared with £6.6 million the year before on sales that increased from £145.1 million to £186.9 million.

However, the company’s press representatives said the report’s conclusions “couldn’t be further from the truth” and even questioned the above sales and profit figures. They confirmed that the company has “definitely not been put up for sale and is currently experiencing record trading.” On the subject of Robert W Baird’s involvement the added: “Robert W Baird is an investment company, which has been working with Euro Car Parts for almost 18 months now, exploring ways of expanding the business organically.”
