New biomass facility aiding Bridgestone’s carbon neutrality goals in Costa Rica

In 2007, the Central American nation of Costa Rica set itself the goal of becoming the world’s first carbon neutral country, a feat it aimed to achieve by 2021. Bridgestone de Costa Rica (BSCR) has supported this ambition and set itself the goal of achieving C-Neutral certification by the Costa Rican government. It has worked towards this via a number of projects, including the installation of LED lights and solar lamps, switching to greener chemical products and implementing a carpooling programme. Last year it introduced nitrogen vulcanisation, replacing less energy-efficient hot water. As a result of these and other efforts, CO2 emissions at BSCR sank by 923 tons year-on-year in 2013, a 4.14 per cent reduction.

Pirelli recognized for ‘Climate Disclosure Leadership’

Pirelli has been recognized in the “Climate Disclosure Leadership Index Italy 2014” (CDLI), which evaluates the completeness of a company’s strategy against climate change and the transparency of its communication to stakeholders. Pirelli scored 99/100.

The result was announced 5 November in Milan during the presentation of the CDP Italy 100 Climate Change Report 2014, prepared by SDA-Bocconi with the support of IMQ, and focused on the ways in which the 100 biggest listed Italian companies face and manage climate change.

Fengli Tyre goes green

It is reported that China-based Guangzhou Fengli Tyre and Rubber has started work on a project at its plant in Conghua, Guangdon Province, to install annual capacity for 10 million eco-friendly, high-performance tyres.

PCL couplings take on a silver, environmentally-friendly sheen

Silver is certainly not runner-up to gold at PCL; the company reports that its famous “Made in Sheffield” couplings began the transformation from gold to silver at the start of the month for the sake of the environment. The switch to a more environmentally-friendly manufacturing process means a change of colour for the PCL couplings, however they will still be made from hardened steel to ensure extra durability.

Electric vehicles used to measure air pollution

Scientists from the University of Leicester will be taking to the streets in electric vehicles (EVs) fitted with specialised air monitoring sensors, with the intention of measuring the extent of air pollution in city environments. The Air Quality Group at the University of Leicester has collaborated with Cenex, the UK’s First Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon and Fuel Cell technologies, who specialise in bringing new low and zero emission vehicle technologies to the UK roads.
