Versalis, Genomatica win TTI Award for renewable butadiene JV

Versalis, a European producer in the polymers and elastomers industry, and bioengineering firm Genomatica’s joint venture project to create renewable butadiene has been presented with Tire Technology International’s Environmental Achievement of the Year award. The companies embarked on the long-term project to address concerns around potential butadiene shortages and price increases. In a demonstration run in 2016, several kilograms of renewable butadiene were prepared starting from commercial sugars, with polymerisation tests showing no differences between the polybutadiene prepared from fossil or renewable feedstock.

Two US environmental awards for Yokohama tyre factory

The older of Yokohama Rubber’s two tyre factories in the USA recently gained a pair of awards for outstanding achievements in sustainable manufacturing: the Environmental Excellence Gold Award from the Virginia Water Environment Association and the bronze Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award.

Honda award recognises Bridgestone’s environmental efforts

Bridgestone Corporation shares that it received an Environmental Award from Honda Motor Co., Ltd at an awards ceremony held at the tyre maker’s Tochigi plant in Japan on 18 February. At the event, Bridgestone’s vice-president Yutaka Yamaguchi was awarded a certificate of commendation by Hiroshi Saito, general manager of Honda Motor’s global operations planning office. This is the first time that Bridgestone has received an Environmental Award from Honda.

Apollo wins Global Green Future Leadership Award 2016

Apollo Tyres was recently awarded the Global Green Future Leadership Award 2016 by World CSR Congress. The company received this award under the Best Waste Management category for its Clean My Transport Nagar (CMTN) initiative in the trans-shipment hubs across the country. Starting with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Delhi, in 2012, the company’s CMTN initiative is currently running in the trans-shipment hubs of Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kanpur and Mumbai, in addition to Delhi.

Let it rain – Bandag retreading facility more than doubles rainwater storage capacity

Bridgestone Australia’s Bandag Manufacturing retreading operation has completed the first part of a project that will enable its Wacol plant in Brisbane to harvest and store more than one million litres of rainwater. Bandag added 13 new rainwater tanks to its existing harvesting capabilities at the end of August, enabling the business to collect and store an extra 610,000 litres of water. Stage two will be completed in the coming months and will take Bandag’s total rainwater storage capacity to 1,100,000 litres.

UK automotive sector turns over a record £69.5 billion

New figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) confirm the growing strength and vitality of the UK automotive industry and its ascendancy as a major global player. SMMT’s 16th annual Sustainability Report confirms the sector is breaking new records, with turnover hitting an all-time high of £69.5 billion in 2014. Manufacturing output, vehicle sales, jobs and export values also grew, while the environmental impact from vehicle production has been reduced dramatically.

Bridgestone releases 2015 environmental report

Bridgestone Corporation has published the English-language version of its Environmental Report 2015. Titled “Looking Ahead to the World in 2050,” the 16-page document presents an overview of the company’s environmental activities, and provides details of Bridgestone’s efforts last year as well as its future plans. Central government and local authorities should think hard and look at the facts before making major policy changes in the name of in the name of achieving ‘green’ environmental improvements, says Glass’s. They point out that knee jerk reactions to studies showing the negative impact of diesel emissions on urban air quality could be counterproductive as well as affect sales and use of diesel cars and commercial vehicles.

Tyre dumper given suspended prison sentence for waste offences

The owner of a tyre waste business has been given a 15-month custodial sentence, suspended for 2 years, and a 2 year supervision order after illegally storing almost 84,659 waste tyres at several sites in Devon. The case was brought by the Environment Agency and the sentence was handed down on 25 March.

Yokohama’s Chinese plant market third-phase of tree-planting

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced on 25 December 2014 that Suzhou Yokohama Tire Co., Ltd. (the manufacturers Chinese tyre plant) held a ceremony and festival on 1 November marking the third phase of tree planting at the factory in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The tree planting is part of the Yokohama Rubber Group’s worldwide Yokohama Forever Forest Project.

Environmental certification for Yokohama tyre plant in China

Late last year, the Yokohama Rubber tyre factory in Hangzhou, China was certified by city authorities as a ‘Hangzhou City Environmental Education Base’. The company views this certification as significant as, out of the some 300,000 companies operating in Hangzhou City, only 30 have been granted this certification – and the Hangzhou Yokohama Tire Co., Ltd facility is only one of four certified manufacturing operations. The certification was granted on 26 November 2014, and is the second environmental recognition the Yokohama facility in Hangzhou has received. In 2013, Hangzhou Yokohama Tire was certified as an Environmental Education Base by the Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone, where the company’s facilities are located.

Oil leak at Titan Tire Corporation plant contained

Titan International Subsidiary Titan Tire Corporation says an above-ground storage tank at one of its facilities in the US has leaked lubricating oil, and this oil has entered the local water system. The leak at the Bryan, Ohio plant flowed into the storm water system and then into the Prairie Creek.

Bridgestone tyre factory gains two Wildlife Habitat Council certifications

The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) has granted Bridgestone Americas’ Monterrey tyre factory in Mexico Corporate Lands for Learning and Wildlife at Work certification. The passenger car and light truck tyre manufacturing facility thus becomes the first Bridgestone plant outside the US to receive these two certifications. In addition, the Monterrey plant was a runner-up for the Corporate Lands for Learning 2014 Rookie of the Year award.

Bridgestone a treble Honda environmental awardee

Honda builds vehicles at nine manufacturing facilities in the US, and has received original equipment tyres from Bridgestone Americas for many years. To honour the tyre maker’s green efforts, at its 22nd annual Environmental, Safety and Ergonomics Symposium, Honda acknowledged Bridgestone’s Wilson (North Carolina) tyre plant with three ‘Green Factory Environmental Achievement Recognitions’. Honda recognised the Wilson facility in three categories: energy reduction, natural resources and pollution prevention.
