Actia releases new software for Multi-Diag

From its beginnings in 2006, born out of the OEM electronics powerhouse’s manufacturer diagnostics expertise, Actia reports that its Multi-Diag device has grown to be a leading diagnostic tool. In According to the company, ACTIA Group invented the first diagnostic tool for Renault in 1985 and in 2003, before purchasing Muller BEM. This brought together two global businesses specialising in vehicle electronics and diagnostics garage equipment which forms the basis of the company as it is today. And the latest news is that the firm has released new software for the Multi-Diag device.

Only last week Continental announced plans to run a joint venture operation with Korea’s SK Innovation to develop, manufacture and market lithium ion batteries systems for electric vehicles; now the German company has released a few figures outlining why it sees so much potential in the electric vehicle market. As long as the price is right.

Conti targets EV market with battery JV

Continental Corporation and Korean company SK Innovation have announced they will jointly develop, manufacture and market lithium ion batteries systems for electric vehicles. The two companies have signed an agreement to set up a joint venture for this purpose, with SK Innovation and Continental holding 51 and 49 per cent ownership respectively.

Conti launches EV-specific tyre range

According to Continental, an estimated 2.8 million electric vehicles will be registered worldwide and on the road by 2020. To cater to this currently small yet fast-growing market, the tyre maker has introduced the Conti.eContact, a new range featuring dimensions specifically aimed at electric vehicles.

Tools for electric and hybrid vehicles

Tool manufacturer Facom is introducing a new range dedicated to the safe maintenance and repair of hybrid and electric vehicles. Known as the EVT (Electric Vehicle Tools) range, these insulated tools have been designed specifically to protect mechanics working on electric and hybrid vehicles. The "high voltage" systems in these vehicles can have up to 500 volts running through some cables – enough to cause serious harm or even death.

UK-funded project leads to a better EV battery

Axeon, a Dundee-based independent supplier of lithium-ion batteries, says a project it undertook with two other companies, Ricardo and Allied Vehicles, has succeeded in developing a new battery for use in electric cars that offers a more than 35 per cent improvement in range compared with batteries weighing the same and employing existing technologies. The parties involved are said to currently be in “active discussions” about the commercialisation of the new technology.

Conti enters lithium-ion battery partnership

Continental has announced it is partnering with lithium-ion battery specialist Akasol Engineering in order to develop the next generation of lithium-ion technology for electric vehicles. The two German companies’ work centres on a scalable battery concept that allows for modular expansion to accommodate vehicles of varying size. The batteries under development will also utilise a fluid cooling system that uniformly cools all parts of the unit, an action that enhances battery performance, vehicle range and service life.

Michelin supports Leicester to Lands End charity milk float

Michelin has stepped in with new tyres for an electric milk float so it can complete a charity run from Leicester to Lands End. The classic milk float, that still works six days per week, normally runs on solid tyres but heat build up on long distance runs had become a safety concern.

Bridgestone fits Ecopia tyres to Nissan GreenSource Team in e-Miglia rally

The first 100 per cent electric car, Nissan’s Leaf signed Bridgestone to provide its Ecopia EP150 tyres as original equipment earlier in the year. Now the tyre manufacturer has helped to cement its relationship with the 2011 European Car of the Year with fitment on the Leaf of Nissan GreenSource Team Holland in the e-Miglia rally across the Alps on 5 August.

UK study to explore battery recycling and reuse opportunities

In September, six British companies will get underway with studies into the feasibility of recycling and reuse of batteries for low and ultra low carbon vehicles. The six firms – Axeon, Energy Cost Advisors Ltd, LiFeBATT Ltd, Narec, OXIS Energy Ltd and TRL will carry out seven studies between them (TRL will perform two studies) at a total cost of just over £670,000. It is anticipated the studies will take approximately 12 months to complete.

EU funded ‘OpEneR’ project to increase electric vehicle efficiency

Two shortcomings of today’s crop of fully electric vehicles (FEV) are their limited driving range and long charging time – for the majority of motorists this pair of factors outweighs the host of environmental and cost benefits such vehicles offer. Key culprits behind these limitations are vehicle batteries, however improving battery technology alone is no panacea. To unlock the FEV market and reduce “range anxiety”, several leading automotive industry firms have partnered in a European Union co-funded project aimed at optimising how the power provided by existing battery technology is utilised.

Mayor's electric dream

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has declared that he "wants London to be the electric car capital of Europe." He was speaking as Jon Goodman, MD of Peugeot UK, presented him with an all-electric Peugeot iOn.

The iOn, which is one of the first zero-emission tailpipe emissions cars to go on general sale, had just finished a whirlwind tour of major Peugeot dealerships in the UK.

EC approves switchable battery research project

Automotive supplier Continental and ten other European and Israeli companies active in the electric vehicle sector, have joined together to form ‘Easybat’, a consortium dedicated to furthering EV development. On March 2 the consortium announced formal approval from the European Commission for a research and development programme into means of facilitating the European production of electric cars with switchable batteries. The March 2 announcement is the first switchable battery electric car project approved by the Commission.

Conti sensor helps EV users avoid a shocking experience

Many batteries in electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles generate some 400 volts, almost twice the voltage employed in standard domestic plug sockets and enough to give a potentially fatal jolt. Vehicle occupants risk exposure to this electric charge in the event of an accident, and US legislators have already stipulated that vehicle power supply voltage must drop to below 60 volts within five seconds of an accident occurring. No comparable laws yet exist in European markets, yet Germany’s Continental is switched onto the challenge of reducing electric vehicle battery voltage to safer levels following a collision. The automotive supplier has now come up with the evSAT, a sensor that will immediately shut off high-voltage batteries in the event of a collision while the vehicle is in charge mode, enabling emergency service personnel to recover the vehicle without the risk of receiving an electric shock.
