CARS 2020 – the main aims

Following the tabling of the European Commission’s CARS 2020 Action Plan to aid the European automobile manufacturing industry, there are a number of concrete proposals that are likely to affect the industry. According to the details, which we summarise here, the commission and member states must now implement the policies announced. In order to monitor this process, and continue the dialogue with the stakeholders a dedicated process will be established called "CARS 2020".

Safer cars from November 1st

Authorities say that Europe has taken a major step forward in vehicle safety from 1 November 2012 as a basket of new safety requirements for new types of motor vehicles comes into force.

Measures which become mandatory include safety belt reminders, safety requirements for electric vehicles, easier child seat anchorages (ISOFIX), better protection of passengers against the displacement of luggage in case of the accident and the fitment of a tyre pressure monitoring system. In addition, cars will be also equipped with gear shift indicators to help drivers save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.

Michelin eco ranges presented at Paris show

Michelin’s Energy E-V first caught the public’s eye at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year through the release of the ZOE, Renault’s new, affordable electric car, and the tyre maker officially debuted the Energy E-V – now bearing an AA label – at last week’s Paris Motor Show.

Ecopia carries Nissan Leaf on record journey

Bridgestone has expressed pride in the contribution its Ecopia tyres made towards the completion of a 12,500 kilometre journey made by three all-electric Nissan Leaf cars within a 42 day period. This feat, the tyre maker comments, is thought to be the longest journey achieved by these electric vehicles in such a short period of time.

Conti, SK Innovations battery JV a ‘strong team’ for future mobility

Yesterday, Korean firm SK Innovation and Germany’s Continental signed an agreement to create a jointly managed company. SK Innovation and Conti will respectively hold 51 per cent and 49 per cent shareholdings in this joint venture, which is being set up with the goal of mutually developing, producing and globally marketing lithium-ion battery systems for cars. This agreement comes half a year after the two companies signed a letter of intent.

Tyres play a starring role in Japanese EV research

If work being carried out by Professor Takashi Ohira and his team at Toyohashi University of Technology can be successfully applied to the real world, the day may come when we drive electric cars powered by current flowing through their tyres. The Toyohashi team is working on a project known as EVER, or Electric Vehicle on Electrified Roadway, and it says the technology being developed applies the same basic concept used on suburban electric railways for more than a century. On 5 July the Ohira and the Toyohashi team demonstrated its prototype technology at the WTP2012 trade show in Yokohama.

Tall tyres, externally excited motor – Conti shows off its EV technology

To demonstrate its various solutions for electric vehicles, Continental has converted a bog-standard Renault Megane to a prototype electric vehicle. Around 40 components the company produces for electric vehicles have been integrated into the Megane, including the motor, battery, power electronics, displays and controls, all the peripheral devices for propulsion and charging and – most importantly for us – Conti.eContact tyres. Most of components used are already on the market or are ready to go into production.

Nokian's record breaking electric performance on ice

Test driver Janne Laitinen from Nokian Tyres reached a speed of 252.09 km/h (156.64 mph) in the E-RA electric car on the ice of Lake Ukonjärvi in Inari, Finland. The record, achieved on 17 March by Nokian and the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences' high-tech E-RA (Electric RaceAbout) vehicle, is unique.

Actia releases new software for Multi-Diag

From its beginnings in 2006, born out of the OEM electronics powerhouse’s manufacturer diagnostics expertise, Actia reports that its Multi-Diag device has grown to be a leading diagnostic tool. In According to the company, ACTIA Group invented the first diagnostic tool for Renault in 1985 and in 2003, before purchasing Muller BEM. This brought together two global businesses specialising in vehicle electronics and diagnostics garage equipment which forms the basis of the company as it is today. And the latest news is that the firm has released new software for the Multi-Diag device.

Only last week Continental announced plans to run a joint venture operation with Korea’s SK Innovation to develop, manufacture and market lithium ion batteries systems for electric vehicles; now the German company has released a few figures outlining why it sees so much potential in the electric vehicle market. Conti targets EV market with battery JV

Continental Corporation and Korean company SK Innovation have announced they will jointly develop, manufacture and market lithium ion batteries systems for electric vehicles. The two companies have signed an agreement to set up a joint venture for this purpose, with SK Innovation and Continental holding 51 and 49 per cent ownership respectively.

According to Continental, an estimated 2.8 million electric vehicles will be registered worldwide and on the road by 2020. To cater to this currently small yet fast-growing market, the tyre maker has introduced the Conti.eContact, a new range featuring dimensions specifically aimed at electric vehicles.
