University of Warwick in £65 million battery research initiative
WMG researchers, at the University of Warwick, will be a significant part of a new £65 million national battery research initiative. The Faraday Institution, a new multi-million pound research institute, was announced on Monday 2 October 2017, by Greg Clark, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. It will drive and accelerate fundamental research in developing battery technologies, and its translation.

Tesla to launch electric truck
Tesla is set to launch its first autonomous electric lorry next month as the company attempts to break into the commercial vehicle market.
The Tesla Semi truck is scheduled to be unveiled on October 26 and is expected to have a working range of 200 to 300 miles, making it more suitable for inner-city transport than long-distance motorway haulage.
Royal Mail goes electric with Peugeot
Royal Mail has signed an agreement with Peugeot to purchase 100 zero-emission Partner L2 Electric vans, to be used by postmen and women on their delivery rounds. UK motorists in love with driving, says survey
A large number (46 per cent) of middle aged drivers admitted to using their cars for ‘me time’ to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. New consumer research from LeasePlan UK, one of the world’s largest vehicle management groups, shows Brits still have a love for driving and the freedom it gives them. The happiest of all drivers, still coming off the hype of passing their test, are the youngest motorists (26 per cent) compared to just 15 per cent of 45 to 54 year olds.
Most new cars autonomous within 10 years – Tesla’s Elon Musk
Tesla founder Elon Musk believes almost all new cars will be autonomous within a decade. Speaking at the summer meeting of the National Governance Association, he said, “It will be rare for a car to be produced in 10 years’ time that is not autonomous.”
The clock is ticking for combustion engines and conventional tyres
The UK government has decided to ban the sale of both new petrol and new diesel cars from 2040. The goal isn’t as ambitious as Norway’s, which aims to do the same by 2025. India thinks it can do it by 2031. And France is on par with the UK, also aiming to ban sales of new combustion engine-based cars by 2040. However, in the UK at least, electric cars sales currently represent less than 1 per cent of new registrations. Therefore a lot has to happen between now and 2040 for this new rule to become reality. What is clear is that there is now real legislative momentum in favour of electric vehicles in the UK and that this will have an inevitable impact on OE suppliers, and in turn the UK replacement tyre market, especially in three key areas: weight, torque and rolling resistance.

A dramatic growth in electric vehicles on Britain’s roads could see peak electricity demand jump by more than the capacity of the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station by 2030, according to National Grid.

The hybrid and electric cars market has seen strong growth globally as countries work to meet ambitious CO2 targets, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6 per cent. Scandinavian countries such as Sweden will enjoy exceptional growth forecast growth of 27.9 per cent between 2016 and 2021, according to research firm MarketLine.
Behr Hella Service expands compressor range for hybrid and electric vehicles
According to a study by management consultant, PricewaterhouseCoopers, every third European new car registration could be an electric car by 2030. Hybrid and electric vehicles require electrically powered compressors because, instead of a combustion engine, a battery provides their energy. Thermal management expert, Behr Hella Service, has therefore been offering compressors for hybrid and electric vehicles for more than six years.
