All new Bridgestone tyres to be ‘EV-ready’

Bridgestone will make all of its future tyres suitable for electric vehicles (EVs), setting out its strategy to supply car tyre markets during the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) to electrified powertrains. Tyre-makers have approached EV tyres in a variety of ways, unveiling specialist product lines, adding EV-approved variations to existing product lines, or introducing new technologies to ensure entire portfolios are applicable to EV performance demands. Bridgestone’s Enliten tyre technology platform addresses these demands, which include improvements in energy efficiency, maximising battery range, and accommodating the increased weight and torque of EVs. A Bridgestone-commissioned survey showed increased consumer support for EVs on the back of both potential savings in fuel or energy prices and reducing the environment impact of their motoring.

Enso Ltd is one of 15 global finalists for this year’s prize, and company founder and chief executive officer Gunnlaugur Erlendsson was amongst a handful of climate tech entrepreneurs who yesterday met with Earthshot Prize founder and Council member, Prince William.

EV tyres: epyx fleet data shows 6,350-mile deficit in life versus petrol, diesel vehicle tyres

Tyres fitted to electric vehicles (EVs) face a shortfall in longevity versus those fitted to petrol or diesel cars, new fleet data from epyx suggests. The first tyre change for electric cars is taking place at an average of 17,985 miles and 551 days old, compared to 24,641 miles and 585 days for hybrids, and 24,335 and 670 days for petrol and diesel cars. On average tyres fitted to EVs are lasting 6,350 fewer miles than equivalents on internal combustion engine (ICE) powered vehicles. The data is taken from epyx’s 1link Service Network platform. Car and van fleets totalling more than four million vehicles use 1link to manage and process SMR.

Michelin – All our tyres are EV-suitable

Although the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicates that battery electrics will hold a 17.8% new car market share by the end of 2023, vehicles powered from the socket remain the subject of lively debate and sensational headlines. Tyres aren’t exempt from such discourse, as the Daily Mail made clear in July when maligning these as the “dirty secret behind your electric vehicles.” To bring some common sense back into the EV tyre conversation, Michelin has shared its views on the subject.

Yokohama begins ‘renewable’ Advan production

Tyres for electric vehicles made using renewable electricity. This is reality at Yokohama Rubber, whose Shinshiro-Minami plant in Japan has begun producing Yokohama Advan EV tyres with power from a new proprietary solar panel power generation system that officially entered operation in August 2023 and with renewable energy-generated electricity that the plant has been procuring since April.

Pirelli: EV fitments growing at double 2022’s rate, brand most-seen on new EVs at IAA Munich

Pirelli has claimed leadership in supplying tyres for premium and prestige electric cars at the IAA Mobility car show in Munich. Pirelli equipped almost 25 per cent of the BEV cars and 30 per cent of the plug-in hybrids among the new electric cars on display. The cars were fitted with a mix of Pirelli’s products, such as its P Zero performance and its Scorpion SUV ranges, all featuring the company’s “Elect” marking that signifies that the models have been developed with EV-specific technologies. The Italian brand said that its original equipment homologations for EVs have grown at a rate more than double that on the previous year.

Survey suggests majority of EV owners want specialist tyres

According to a survey commissioned by Apollo Tyres, almost two-thirds of electric vehicle (EV) owners in the UK would prefer to purchase replacement tyres that have been developed specifically for use on this type of vehicle. A poll of 1,000 motorists showed that 64 per cent of EV drivers said they would favour EV-specific replacement tyres, compared to just one per cent who say they would be unlikely to choose these.

Leapmotor, ZC Rubber strengthen EV partnership

ZC Rubber has entered into a strategic partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co Ltd (Leapmotor) to deepen their mutual cooperation in the automotive sector. ZC Rubber doesn’t share specific details about this new cooperation but notes that it builds upon the tyre maker’s role as “one of the most important original equipment partners of Leapmotor.”

Bridgestone brings Enliten to motorsport

Teams competing in this year’s Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (BWSC) will drive on the first motorsport tyres to feature Enliten technology. Furthermore, one of the tyre specifications that Bridgestone custom designed for the 1,860-mile (3,000 km) route through Australia contains 63 per cent recycled and renewable materials.

Kumho Ecsta PS71 EV OE on 2022 Car of the Year, the electric Kia EV6

While most tyre manufacturers are evolving their approach to building ranges of electric vehicle tyres, with specialism not always the preferred route, a small number of tyre-makers were quick off the mark with new product lines. Korean manufacturer Kumho was one of the small number to bring an all-new product to the electric vehicle replacement tyre market, entering the burgeoning segment in 2016 with the Wattrun VS31. The tyre garnered several accolades for pioneering design work, including both the prestigious German Red Dot Design Award and American Green Good Design award. Now Kumho’s strategy is to bring its EV line more directly into alignment with its existing passenger car tyre brands; the Wattrun VS31 pattern has now been superseded by the Ecsta PS71 EV, the company’s next generation electric vehicle tyre.

GT Radial SportActive 2 UHP tyre range extension: 90% market coverage

Giti Tire has added nine new GT Radial SportActive 2 sizes, including its first 22” rim for premium powerful SUVs and three recently unveiled dedicated electric vehicle (EV) tyres. Size 275/40R22 is aimed at large premium segment vehicles such as the Audi RSQ8, BMW X7 and Range Rover Sport while 275/45R21, 255/50R20, 235/50R19, one of the biggest sellers in Europe, and 255/60R18 develop the pattern’s 4×4, CUV and SUV coverage. The recently launched AAA-rated GT Radial SportActive 2 EV is now available in sizes 255/45R20 and 235/55R19 to cover the largest selling EV models from Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, VW and Volvo to name a few, while 235/45R18 is aimed primarily at the Tesla Model 3. The tyres are now available in the UK from GT Radial’s exclusive distributor in the market, Micheldever Tyre Services.
