Indian Dunlop Units Set to Reopen in April

(India/Rubber Asia) At the end of what seems like an agonizingly endless wait, the gates of the Dunlop factory at Sahagunj, in the eastern State of Communist-ruled West Bengal, and the one at Ambattur near Chennai in the southern State of Tamil Nadu, are set to re-open in April, if nothing else intervenes in between, local media reports said.

“Maintenance work will start probably by early early-April at both the units,” an official spokesman for the Ruia group, which now controls Dunlop India Ltd. (DIL), has said.

Dunlop Bike Tyre Scores Well in Second Test

The new Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier scored another significant victory in its second major international comparative tyre test; this time by German magazine PS.

The test confirmed the result published last month carried out by US magazine, Sport Rider, which compared the top road tyres on the market. The Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier was pitched against the latest offerings from Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Avon, Metzeler and Continental in a gruelling assessment of traction, braking, steering response and general handling qualities.

New Regional Haul Steer and Drive Tyres from Dunlop

Dunlop has launched its first new generation 17.5” and 19.5” regional haul tyres: the Dunlop SP344 steer tyre and SP444 drive tyre. The new tyres provide optimum wet braking, traction and handling throughout their life. In addition, high mileage, improved fuel consumption and a greater resistance to damage are all benefits, which increase fleet efficiency, says Dunlop.

European Motorcycle Champions Test New Dunlop Race Tyres

Dunlop Motorsport will welcome more than 70 of the top motorcycle riders from 14 countries to test their new 2006 race tyres on the Spanish circuits of Albacete and Valencia, over five days in March.

This is the third year that Dunlop has organised such a pre-season test: “We are strongly committed to winning the national championships in all major markets. In 2005 we supplied the winning tyres for the national champions in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and USA“, said Steve Male, Dunlop’s European Motorcycle Motorsport Manager.

Uncertainty at Goodyear Germany

Concern amongst Goodyear Dunlop Germany employees is growing as rumours abound about the future direction of the company. Talk of the possible consequences is said to be weighing down on employees, resulting in a difficult working atmosphere.

The word is that Goodyear is planning to change its organisational structure in Germany at some point in the near future. The reorganisation is expected to bring the legally independent Goodyear, Fulda, Dunlop, M-Plus (associated brands) and GDHS (trade) businesses together under one roof, in a similar way to Continental’s profit centre model. If and when this happens, it is not only the managing directors who stand to lose some of their influence. There are also question marks over jobs in Hanau, Fulda and Cologne. The company’s car dealership and truck tyre businesses are already run on an integrated basis.

Bandag Loses Biggest Fleet Contract to Goodyear

Eurofleet, Bandag’s pan-European fleet service, has lost its largest contract to Goodyear, according to informed sources. The news is a severe blow for the company as the account in question, a full service tyre contract with GE-TIP (General Electric Equipment Services – Transport International Pool), covered roughly 35,000 vehicles and accounted for 50 per cent of Eurofleet’s revenue.

Now that Goodyear has taken over the contract, Tyres & Accessories has learnt that the company will mostly supply its retreaded products to all 69,000 of GE-TIP’s trailers. During the course of the new three-year deal Goodyear is expected to supply 40,000 new and retreaded tyres through its Truck Force network every year. While the majority of these will be hot-cure products, the company will also provide Goodyear and Dunlop new tyres as OE to the fleet’s new trailer purchases.

Dunlop Supports Motorsport Engineers of the Future

Dunlop is working with young engineers to bring Formula racing car BMM02 into reality. The team consists of 20 postgraduate Automotive and Motorsport engineers from Brunel University West London, with the common goal of designing and manufacturing a formula-style racing car for the Formula Student Competition 2006.

Goodyear Produces 4 millionth RunOnFlat Tyre in Europe

This week marks the production of the 4 millionth RunOnFlat tyre produced by the Goodyear Dunlop group in Europe. Goodyear RunOnFlat tyres are built at the company’s plant in Fulda, Germany, while Dunlop RunOnFlats are built in Hanau and Furstenwalde, Germany.

Promotion in Goodyear Dunlop PR Team

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK promoted Matthew Bowell to the new role of PR support manager in the company’s corporate communications team. Bowell joined the tyre giant in 2004 as Communications Specialist, after beginning his PR career in a London NHS Trust, before moving to work on the Comic Relief programme in 2002 and 2003.

Bandag Dealer Opens in Andalusia

Owner Leocadio Alcaide (38) founded his company in 2000 in Alcalá de Guadaíra, on the outskirts of Seville, as a retailer of premium new tyres such as Goodyear, Michelin, Firestone and Dunlop. He also sold Bandag retreads manufactured by a Bandag Dealer in Andalusia and soon realised that opening his own Bandag shop would be an important contribution to the transport sector in the area.

Ex-Dunlop Site Could Produce New MG Smart Cars

Corporate problem solver, David James is reportedly in advanced talks to buy the MG Rover brand from Nanjing Automobile. A move that, according to The Times, could “sound the death knell for the Longbridge plant.” James is said to be planning to use the MG Rover brand on Smart Roadster cars. Until now these cars have been produced by Mercedes in Coventry. James is believed to have agreed to buy the design, technology and equipment of Mercedes’ Smart Roadster car for about 20 million euros and old Dunlop tyre factory in Coventry for about 10 million euros.

Race Your Way To Monte Carlo

The Dunlop Race Academy is pulling up to the starting grid once again as the 2006 contest opens to applicants. Over 8000 people applied to enter last year and Dunlop is expecting even more this time round as budding racing stars compete to race in a televised championship race at Donington, before jetting off to Monaco to sample the life of a racing driver.

Seven regional finalists will be chosen to undergo training at Donington from experts such as Le Mans 24 Hour racing driver, Calum Lockie, as they endeavour to learn the skills needed to be a star on the track.
