Goodyear has launched a new steer tyre for 7.5 tonne vehicles which is said to give significant operator benefits thanks to its size. According to the manufacturer, the Regional RHS 225/70R17.5, which fits standard rims, increases front axle weight capacity whilst providing enhanced handling and better wear characteristics.
(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear’s North American tyre operations have made a number of personnel changes. The moves, said Goodyear, were made with “an emphasis on promoting our primary consumer tyre brands and further evolving our market-driven focus.”
A New Zealand man is today some £7,500 worse off but hopefully on his way to better understanding the meaning of the word recycling after being fined for illegally stockpiling tyres in a disused quarry. Owen McDonald Douglas, sole shareholder and business manager of the Tauranga based company Tyre Disposal Ltd, had been granted resource consent for using the site in 2004, on the provision that the tyres brought into the quarry were to be scrapped and incinerated as industrial fuel. Tyre Disposal Ltd had built up a sizable client base in the local area, and regularly collected used tyres from customers that included Dunlop and national tyre chain Beaurepaires.
Bridgestone South Africa’s Firestone range scooped the coveted ‘Best Tyre’ award at the inaugural FOCUS on Excellence awards evening, held in Johannesburg in November. Candidates for this top honour were chosen by four hundred owners and managers of road transport fleets operating more than 10 vehicles, selected at random from 22,000 records on a fleet owners’ database.

Volvo group commercial vehicles in Europe will be riding on Goodyear Dunlop tyres after the two companies recently signed a deal for the supply of OE tyres. The three-year agreement covers all European-manufactured Volvo trucks and buses and Renault trucks with rims 16” and larger. The tyres will be supplied from Goodyear Dunlop factories in Germany, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Turkey.

The grid for the inaugural 2007 BARC/Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup has been boosted with the announcement that Dunlop is to run a SEAT Leon FR as a VIP/guest car in the series. he 200hp Leon FR will compete in Class C of the Cup, against cars such as the Renault Clio 172, Citroen C4VTS, Mini Cooper S and MG ZS180. The car is being built by multiple Fiat Challenge Champions, AMR Racing, and team owner Adrian Miller is also talking to two other drivers about running sister cars to the Dunlop entry.
Dunlop India Ltd is reportedly taking steps to enter the OTR tyre market by cooperating with Bharat Earth Movers Ltd and Coal India Ltd (CIL). Kolokata Newsline reports that the companies have decided to invest in tyre-makers to ward off a supply crisis in India. BEML has already tied-up with CIL for providing 1 billion rupees (£11.4 million) each to Apollo Tyres and JK Tyres as a soft loan so that they manufacture dumper-truck tyres. According to the Kolkata Newsline, CIL needs to replace at least 2,696 tyres in 2006-07 and a total of 19,300 tyres by 2011-2012.

The tyre portfolio has been widened to include agricultural, industrial, lawncare, ATV and utility vehicle tyres, from such household names as Carlisle, Trelleborg, Goodyear, Dunlop, Eurogrip and others. The company also opened a new warehouse this year, which increases warehousing capacity by 300 per cent.
Derbyshire-based Pneu-Logic has introduced a new wireless and paperless fleet data recording system. The company has gone into partnership with Goodyear Dunlop to market and promote the system. Pneu-Inspector is a hand held, easy-to-use, tyre tread depth combined pressure gauge which collects accurate tyre data and uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with a hand-held mobile computer. The result is real-time information, allowing fleet managers to view data about their tyres within seconds of them being inspected.

Dunlop broke new ground – and shifted plenty of water – at the Paul Ricard circuit near Marseille, France last week, with a first-ever dedicated wet test bringing together top teams from MotoGP, Superbike and Endurance for a two day programme at which multi-compound wet – weather tyres made their track debut.
The tests brought the title-winning French SERT (Suzuki Endurance Racing Team) alongside the Tech 3 Yamaha MotoGP team and the Airwaves Ducati British Superbike squad – all lining up for the full spray treatment at the multi-million dollar Paul Ricard HTTT (High Tech Test Track) facility more usually dedicated to F1 and Le Mans race cars.
