Dunlop Gains Six OE Wins in Six Months

Dunlop’s Original Equipment team are celebrating six original equipment (OE) wins in six months. Dunlop’s business strategy includes the aim to be first with “strategic original equipment manufacturers” and this means fitting Touch Technology tyres onto a range of high performance cars including the Audi A5, Jaguar XF, Renault Laguna and Vauxhall Corsa VXR.

“Dunlop have a strong product range within the market, Dunlop’s pedigree is legendary. We have worked successfully over the last six months to achieve OE wins across a range of cars from the Vauxhall Corsa to the Jaguar XF. For a true driver, there’s no compromise, each tyre in Dunlop’s vast range has been uniquely engineered to offer the ultimate drive. We have worked closely with the vehicle manufacturers to ensure that they are fitting the right combination of high technology compound and tread pattern to achieve the performance the car is capable of” said Peter Wragg, Dunlop Original Equipment Account Executive.

Alfa Romeo, AMG, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and TVR are all amongst those that currently fit Dunlop tyres as standard.

Dunlop Sweeps Out of Nigeria

Dunlop, the last tyre manufacturer with a factory in Nigeria, is set to leave the country, favouring the importation of tyres from other nations such as South Africa. The decision is said to be inspired by the persistence of power cuts, unreliable gas supply, a rise in manufacturing costs and inconsistent governmental tariffs, which allowed imported tyres to gain the upper hand in the domestic market.

The company stated that it had reached an impasse with the Nigerian government, after failing to persuade it to alter the prohibitive tariff structure. The government said that local manufacturing could not meet the market demand, though Dunlop argued that the current tariffs, coupled with energy costs and unreliability, made the improvement of production capacity impossible.

Dunlop India Acquires British Component Maker

Dunlop India has bought Schlegel Automotive, one of Britain’s largest auto component manufacturers. The company supplies rubber sealings to major car manufacturers, such as Ford, Toyota and BMW.

Dunlop India has been part of the Ruia Group for three years, when the corporation bought the tyre manufacturer’s ailing Indian operation.

Extreme Maserati to Roar into Goodwood

This weekend Dunlop is presenting what the tyremaker calls “the most extreme Maserati of all time” at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The 755bhp, 204mph Maserati MC12 Corse was originally designed for the race track, but former German Touring Car (DTM) driver Hubert Haupt ordered his for the road – fitted with the latest Dunlop Sport Maxx GT tyres.

The MC12 Corse is a sister of the MC12 Competizione which won both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles in the 2006 FIA GT Championship. The Corse version accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds and at 160mph its racing aerodynamic package delivers a massive downforce of 1,400kg.

Goodyear Dunlop Makes Six-Figure Investment in Wolverhampton Site

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres has announced that further ‘substantial’ investment will be made in its Wolverhampton truck tyre retreading facility. The company has just taken delivery of two new state of the art SDS Shearography Machines, representing a six-figure investment.

The Wolverhampton factory, which employs over 400 people, is home to the company’s Next Tread operations, which specialises in retreading used truck tyre casings. The company states its latest investment will add to the high quality levels of the company’s Next Tread products.

New Manager to Help Goodyear Dunlop ‘Be First With People’

As of July Goodyear Dunlop has a new Training and Organisational Development manager in the UK. Erica Stocks has been appointment to this position and will be based at the company’s head office in Birmingham. Ms Stocks joins the company from leading UK vitamin and health food retailer Holland and Barrett, where she held a similar role. A varied career within the statutory, voluntary and private sector has seen her acquire 22 years experience in training and development.

Goodyear Seeks Exemption From US Recall

In spite of determining that some 82,000 tyres produced between 2007 and March 2008 featured sidewall labelling not fully in compliance with US safety standards, Goodyear has petitioned the National Highway Transport Safety Authority (NHTSA) to exempt the products from a recall. The tyres in question incorrectly identify the number of plies in the tread as being ‘3 polyester and 2 steel’ rather than their actual ‘2 polyester and 2 steel’ manufacture, an error Goodyear believes to be inconsequential to vehicle safety as the tyres were correctly manufactured with the intended number of plies.

Goodyear Dunlop Celebrates Training 150th ‘Tyre Boffin’

This month Peter Wayte, Product Support Officer in the Goodyear Dunlop Technical Centre, celebrated training his 150th internal employee on a course called Technical Tyre Training. The course assists Goodyear Dunlop employees in understanding all the elements of a tyre, from how to read a tyre size to the technologies behind car, motorcycle, truck and farm tyres. It aims at improving personal skill level within the Goodyear Dunlop working environment educating employees in product attributes and tyre test wins. This creates a sense of pride in the brands and highlights Goodyear Dunlop’s premium products in the market.

The Technical Centre is designed to deal with all customer and technical enquiries from the public and dealers as well as training internal and external stakeholders in tyre technicalities. Goodyear Dunlop reports that it is dedicated to the training and development of employees and aims at cultivating high performance standards across the wider organisation.

Apollo to Expand Capacity at South Africa Facilities

Capacity at Apollo Tyres’ South African facilities will rise by one fifth following a £12.9 million investment in its wholly owned Dunlop Tyres International (Pty) Ltd, South Africa (DTIPL) facilities in Ladysmith and Durban. “We are expanding the capacities of both the South African facilities by approximately 20 per cent during this fiscal at an estimated investment of 200 [million] South African Rand,” stated a senior Apollo Tyres official.

At present the combined capacity of the two factories is approximately 180 to 190 tonnes per day – a 30 to 40 tonne per d ay increase on levels two years ago. The majority of production is focused upon truck and bus radial products, with 15 per cent of capacity used to manufacture OTR tyres for the mining sector. These last products are mainly sold in Europe, Australia and South Africa.

Roadsmart Wins Bike Magazine Tyre Test

The Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart sports touring motorbike tyre, which features a “Triple Tread Compound” has topped Bike magazine’s test for budget middle-weight rubber (August issue). The Roadsmart was up against offerings from five other tyre manufacturers: Continental, Michelin, Pirelli, Avon and Bridgestone, but was the only brand to be awarded the full five stars in the blind test at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground.

Tester Bruce Dunn commented: “I’d rate the Roadsmart as my favourite all-rounder here…You would have to ride like a maniac on the road to find the limit of these tyres…Very stable on the front end at higher speeds, good under braking and turning in and they are especially good on the higher radius turns. The Roadsmarts feel on the sporty side and there’s definitely less flex in the sidewalls than the Bridgestones, and they’re definitely all-round better than the Continentals.”

Stamford FY Net Profits Dive in Singapore

International tyre and wheel distributer and service provider Stamford Tyres has reported a full-year net profit fall of 34 per cent to S$7.6 million. The company predicted that the coming year would prove increasingly challenging, as the market continues into volatility.

However, the year saw Stamford’s sales figures stay relatively level, thanks to increased turnover for its major brands Falken, Dunlop and Continental in the Southeast Asian market. While the bottom line suffered dramatically as a result of soaring fuel and raw material costs affecting buying and distribution outgoings, the organisation’s overall turnover rose 11 per cent to S$328 million.

Goodyear Dunlop to Supply 100,000 Tyres to Police

Goodyear Dunlop has announced that it will work in partnership with the National Policing Improvement Agency, making it the main supplier of tyres to over 50 Police forces in the country. The announcement names Goodyear Dunlop as the exclusive tyre framework supplier and service provider and will see over 100,000 Goodyear Dunlop tyres fitted to police vehicles, including patrol cars, motorcycles and public order vans, each year for the next two years. The deal covers the country’s 52 constabularies located throughout Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

New Goodyear Dunlop Europe Truck Tyres Marketing Director

Boris Stevanovic has been appointed Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe BV marketing director for truck tyres, and in this role will be responsible for the company’s operations in this sector within Europe. He takes over from Pietro Saletta, who moves to Italy and begins as the company’s European director of Consumer Tires.
