Dunlop Announces Support for Young Drivers’ Championship

A brand new motor racing championship has been announced for young drivers eager to progress their racing careers. ‘Dunlop Autosport Young Guns’ is supported by the Birmingham based motorsport tyre manufacturer Dunlop and uses single-seater JKS F75 cars, which have a striking visual resemblance to F1. Drivers aged 16-19 now have a helpful extra rung in the ladder to success, which could take them on to the pinnacle of motorsport in the tyre tracks of champions such as Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. Along with other great racing cars, a Dunlop Autosport Young Guns car will be on display at the Autosport International Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, which runs from 14–17 January. There will also be information available about the championship at the show.

Premium Brand Draw Sees Arnold Clark Customer Win Fiat 500

A Stafford man has won a Fiat 500 in a promotion to encourage road safety. At the end of 2009 all Arnold Clark Service Departments throughout the UK ran the campaign focusing on tyre safety, offering free tyre checks and entering people into a competition to win a brand new Fiat 500. The competition was set up in conjunction with six leading tyre manufacturers: Goodyear, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Continental, Michelin and Pirelli. The competition aimed to encourage motorists to increase their road safety by purchasing a premium brand tyre. On the purchase of a premium tyre they were entered into the prize draw to win the Fiat 500.

Strong Link Between OE Satisfaction & Aftermarket Tyre Sales – Study

Results of the latest J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2009 Japan Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Index Study indicate that high levels of satisfaction in original equipment tyres may well lead to a notable increase in brand loyalty amongst customers purchasing summer replacement tyres. The January 7 released results show that, on average, 74 per cent of motorists in Japan are likely to stick with their vehicles’ original equipment tyre brand when purchasing summer replacement tyres. However, amongst the more highly satisfied customers, namely those whose satisfaction scores averaged 800 or higher on a 1,000-point scale, this figure increases to 88 per cent.

Independents the Cheapest Place to Buy Motorcycle Tyres: Encircle Research

Research carried out throughout most of 2009 by Encircle Marketing reveals that independent dealers sold a pair (front and rear) of motorcycle tyres at an average of up to £32 cheaper than other channels. Additionally regional independent dealers kept prices relatively flat throughout the year, hovering between £213.77 and £216.35, while local independents and national fast fitters increased prices on average each quarter. Dealers meanwhile were the most expensive in each quarter. The data was collected using 8,492 mystery calls between January and November 2009, during which 25,794 prices were collated across eight key tyre brands – Avon, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Maxxis, Metzeler, Michelin and Pirelli.

EDIWheel Seminar Paves The Way for E-Business Protocol

In December, around 70 members from the tyre industry gathered together at Coventry to attend a seminar, organised by the TIF. The seminar had only one subject – EDIWheel, or Electronic Data Interchange Wheel.

The 70 delegates represented a true cross-section of the industry and, in his introduction, David White of Kwik-Fit, said that 21 per cent of the audience were from the e-commerce sector, 20 per cent were wholesalers, 37 per cent manufacturers, 10 per cent from trade associations and 14 per cent were tyre dealers.

New Zealand Survey: Unroadworthy Tyres on 16% of Vehicles

According to a survey conducted by Goodyear Dunlop in New Zealand, some 16 per cent of all vehicles in the country’s major centres have at least one unroadworthy tyre. The 1,600 vehicles surveyed in the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch showed a 40 per cent increase in tyre-related defects over a similar survey conducted in 1999.

All Change in UK Commercial Vehicle Tyre Market 2009

In 2009 Bridgestone and Michelin remained relatively stable market leaders in the UK commercial vehicle tyre market. However a real turnaround has taken place in the rest of the top five. According to Tyres & Accessories’ research, the recession has resulted in traditional truck and bus tyre market stalwarts Goodyear Dunlop and Continental being leapfrogged by relative newcomers Hankook, which now resides in third place with a 20 per cent market share.

While Continental didn’t explicitly confirm all the details of T&A/tyrepress.com’s research at its annual market trends briefing in London on 11 December, a spokesperson did concede that the company had slipped to fourth place in 2009 (holding 15 per cent of the market), after its group brands occupied third position in 2008: “We reached third position in 2008, but the challenging economic conditions mean that we are currently fourth in the market with an aim to regain ground in the next three years.”

Ruia Group acquires German Automotive Supplier

India’s Ruia Group, parent company of Dunlop India and Falcon Tyres, has acquired a 60 per cent controlling stake in Germany’s Henniges Automotive Grefrath GmbH, a supplier of automotive sealing systems to numerous vehicle manufacturers, including Daimler, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen. The cost of the acquisition, made through a Special Purpose Vehicle on behalf of Ruia, has not been disclosed. A further 15 per cent share in the acquired company now rests in the hands of Henniges director Juregen Hein, while administrator Wolf Von Der Fecht owning the remaining 25 per cent stake. Ruia Group chairman Pawan K Ruia told Dow Jones Newswires that the group has a call option to buy back the shares held by Fecht and Hein.

Dunlop Introducing Faster, 'Greener' BTCC Tyre

Following a year and a half of design and materials and construction development at Fort Dunlop in Birmingham, home to the company’s European Motorsport Operations, Dunlop is ready to debut a new tyre in next year’s British Touring Car Championship – a tyre said to provide greater performance while complying with latest European environmental regulations. The Sport Maxx BTCC will first be used in round two of the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Rockingham, Northamptonshire on April 25 and 25. Meanwhile, recent tests of the new tyre at Snetterton in Norfolk showed it to be faster over a full race distance and also more durable than its predecessor.

GoldenTyre Takes Over as SuperMoto World Championship Tyre Supplier

From 2010 Italian manufacturer GoldenTyre will replace Dunlop as the sole tyre supplier of the FIM SuperMoto World Championship, which has operated under a single tyre policy since 2006. Championship organiser Youthstream states it looks forward to it new partnership with GoldenTyre, which begins in Italy on May 2, at the first of seven Grands Prix during the 2010 FIM SuperMoto World Championship season.

Luyten to Lead New Apollo Global Marketing Structure

As of January 1, 2010 a new global marketing structure will become operational at Apollo Tyres Ltd, under the leadership of chief marketing officer Marc Luyten, who currently holds the position of director, Marketing & Sales at Apollo Vredestein B V, in Enschede, the Netherlands. Luyten will spearhead the global marketing of Apollo’s key product brands, assisted by a team of product brand managers responsible for individual brands across all regions.

Passenger Car Tyres a Possibility for Dunlop India

Speaking to media in Mumbai on December 4, Ruia Group chairman Pawan Kumar Ruia indicated he is “very bullish” on the tyre industry and that Dunlop India is considering entering the passenger car tyre segment. “We might look at getting into passenger car tyres whenever we consider an expansion in Dunlop,” Ruia stated. “This will be when we reach 130 tons a day capacity at both the Dunlop plants.”

Dunlop India to Relist on Stock Exchange

Dunlop India intends to relist its shares on the Bombay Stock Exchange in the next 10-15 days, reported Reuters on December 4, quoting Ruia Group chairman Pawan Kumar Ruia. "In the next 10-15 days of time the permission will be given to deal or trade in the shares in which trading was suspended in 2002," said Ruia, adding that 45 million shares held by the company in 2002 will be allowed to trade. According to Ruia, the company anticipates an Rs 7 to 8 billion (£91 million to £104 million) turnover in the 2011 financial year.

Dunlop India Recommences Sahaganj Production

After standing idle for more than a year, on December 2 Dunlop India’s Sahaganj factory in West Bengal resumed production. The facility had been closed since November 2008 and been the subject of first a lockout and then electricity connection issues, yet preliminary work to resume production has now began in preparation for an initial production of 40 tonnes of OTR tyres per day.

UK Company Offering Tyre Scrubbing Technology

In motorsport, the scrubbing of tyres – running the tyres for a couple of laps and leaving them to cool and cure – is a fairly common practice used to improve dynamic performance, grip, tyre life and lap times. UK firm Tyre Technology Ltd. already supplies machinery that can replicate this process to motorsport teams. For the first time, however, the company is making its Black Frequency system available for rental to any interested party.
