Avon Tyres ‘sweeps’ Isle of Man TT sidecar races

The Isle of Man TT Sidecar events saw more than 40 competitors using Avon tyres, as Tim Reeves and Dan Sayle took victory in the first and Ben and Tom Birchall claimed an emotional maiden TT win in the second on the brand’s products. Conrad Harrison and Mike Aylott finished second in race one and third in race two while pre-race favourite Dave Molyneux had a frustrating TT by his standards, unable to add to his 16 TT wins and finishing third and second respectively in the two races, with passenger Patrick Farrance.

Dunlop-shod riders successful again at Isle of Man TT

Competing in its 125th anniversary year, Dunlop tyres have had another successful week at the Isle of Man TT. 14 out of 15 podium places used its tyres and three lap records were set in the Superbike, Supersport and Superstock classes respectively.

While it sounds too dramatic to talk about seismic activity in the tyre market, the ongoing long-term effects of the various financial crises are continuing to be felt. At a continental level this has meant continued queries about how the largest tyre makers can better balance supply and demand in Europe. However it is also difficult to say how much of this conjecture is actually manifesting into any kind of practical reality. Indeed, at times like these people can get over-creative in their analyses, along with any legitimate market observations. That said, and without wanting to sound like a seventies pop song, it is as if we can feel the slow undulations of the terra firma under our feet.

Dunlop dominates TT Supersport

The first Isle of Man TT Supersport race once again saw Dunlop riders take 1st, 2nd and 3rd places on the podium – with Michael Dunlop continuing his winning streak using the latest road legal Dunlop D212 GP PRO tyres that were launched earlier this year. Michael Dunlop was joined by his brother on the podium, with William Dunlop taking third place and Bruce Anstey coming in second, 10 seconds behind Michael.

New TruckForce fleet a focus at CV Show 2013

TruckForce, Goodyear Dunlop’s dedicated mobile service and breakdown network, is taking delivery of 60 additional Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 313 CDIs at a rate of one per day from Birmingham dealer Midlands Truck & Van. The new fleet was the focus of its activities at the CV Show. Based across TruckForce’s 15 operating centres, “hubs” for its satellite locations across England and Wales, they are being used by technicians who repair, replace and service customers’ tyres at their premises or at the roadside. The Sprinters are fitted with engine-driven PTOs which power on-board compressors, as well as Hope Safe-T-bar rear safety bumpers and roof-mounted flashing beacons.

Dunlop may end tyre manufacturing at Fort Dunlop in 2014

Despite an illustrious history dating back to 1917, 30 May could mark the end of an era for Dunlop as officials confirmed that its motorsports tyre manufacturing operation will have to find a new home away from the historic Fort Dunlop site from 2014 if their new landlord doesn't lease it back to them again. According to the landlord, Canmoor, the site has been sold to neighbouring Jaguar Land Rover. Therefore it looks likely that Dunlop Aircraft Tyres (a completely separate company from Goodyear Dunlop) will be the only tyre manufacturing operation remaining in Birmingham after the end of the current lease. Dunlop's annual motorsport tyre output is currently believed to be around 200,000 units. 180 manufacturing staff are employed there along with roughly 120 tyre testing, sales and marketing personnel.

Reports: Apollo sells South Africa operation

Local new reports suggest Apollo Tyres has sold Apollo Tyres South Africa (ATSA), including the Ladysmith passenger car tyre plant, to Japan-based Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) for $60 million. The company will reportedly retain the Durban plant, which manufactures truck and bus radial tyres and off-highway tyres used in the mining and construction industries. All employees of the company, other than those in the Durban plant, will continue with ATSA, the company said in a statement.

Goodyear sells NZ service network

Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s New Zealand unit, Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres, intends to sell its retail tyre and automotive service centre chain. The company is selling its 52 Beaurepaires outlets in New Zealand to local company Beau Ideal Ltd for an undisclosed amount. The deal is expected to close by the end of the month, the company said.

Michiel Kramer appointed marketing communications manager at Apollo Vredestein

Michiel Kramer (34) was appointed manager of marketing communications and product management at Apollo Vredestein BV on 1 May 2013. He replaces Bandi Vaczi, who has been promoted to head of global marketing communications at Apollo Tyres Ltd. Kramer will lead the teams responsible for Apollo and Vredestein products and brands in Europe and North America.

Hankook extends DTM tyre partnership

Hankook and European touring car racing series DTM have signed an extension to their official tyre supplier deal, extending the partnership until at least 2016. DTM’s organisers have been sufficiently satisfied by the development of Hankook’s Ventus line of motorsport tyres to sign the deal ahead of schedule, while the Korean tyre manufacturer is keen to sustain the brand value and premium brand status it derives in part from this deal. Angel GT outstrips rivals’ mileage, says Pirelli

The latest sport touring tyre from Pirelli, the Angel GT, has hit the streets – and the Italian tyre maker claims it is number one for mileage within its segment. This weighty statement is based upon testing carried out by Motorrad TestCenter in Germany. Tyres & Accessories has yet to read the test report, however Pirelli indicates that the Angel GT was certified by Motorrad TestCenter as delivering better mileage than the Michelin Pilot Road 3, Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart II, Bridgestone Battlax BT 023, Continental RoadAttack2 and Metzeler Roadtec Z8 Interact M/O.

The latest in a succession of leaders at Tyre Fort in Birmingham, Erich Fric brings with him an easy-going, but teutonic clarity into his (relatively) new role of Goodyear Dunlop UK managing director. Goodyear Dunlop expands Ctrack coverage for TruckForce

Goodyear Dunlop’s dedicated truck tyre service provider, TruckForce has expanded its vehicle tracking system with the UK and Ireland’s largest telematics provider Ctrack, covering its entire fleet. The company says the deal will improve its operating efficiency, enhancing customer service.

Confirmation of Pirelli Angel GT mileage still pending

Pirelli describes its new Angel GT sport touring tyre as being “100 per cent Italian Gran Turismo.” Compared with its predecessor it is said to not only offer improved grip and wet performance – as recently demonstrated on the deck of an Italian aircraft carrier – but also to give significantly higher mileage than the Angel ST. During last autumn’s unveiling of Ducati’s Multistrada 1200 S Granturismo, which has the Angel GT as an original equipment fitment, the Italian tyre maker reported a 15 per cent increase in mileage – now, in spring, this figure has doubled to 30 per cent. The editors at Neue ReifenZeitung, Tyres & Accessories’ German affiliate, asked Pirelli to explain why the reported improvement in mileage is suddenly much higher.

Matt Neal to choose Dunlop designer of the future

Three times BTCC winner, Matt Neal, is to judge Dunlop’s annual car livery competition. The Europe wide competition aims to find a winning livery for the Dunlop Ferrari that will race in the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

Motorsport and car fans, design students and artists (aged 16 years and over*) from across Europe are invited to take part. Each country will have a competition with four entries put forward to the European final. Dunlop is proud to announce that Matt Neal will choose the best four UK designs as part of this pan European competition.
