Driving tests in foreign languages banned

Driving tests will only be allowed to be taken in English and Welsh from today (7th April) in a bid to improve safety and clamp down on fraud, Roads Minister Stephen Hammond has announced.

Theory tests have previously been available with voiceovers in 19 foreign languages and candidates could use an interpreter on both the theory and practical driving tests.

But changes which come into effect today were introduced after a consultation showed more than 70 per cent supported the withdrawal of foreign language voiceovers and interpreters.

Survey points to tyre apathy amongst younger drivers

The results of a survey commissioned by TyreSafe and telematics-linked insurer ingenie highlights the risk younger drivers place themselves at by neglecting regular tyre maintenance. Over a third of the 1,000 respondents, all aged between 18 and 25 years old, said they’d never checked their tyres’ tread depth, while two out of three hadn’t checked their tread within the last month, the maximum recommended period between checks.

End to foreign language support for driving tests

From April next year UK driving test candidates will no longer be able to use foreign language voiceovers and interpreters on test. The move, announced today by Road Safety Minister Robert Goodwill, follows a public consultation.

Government to publish young driver safety green paper

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced plans for green paper on the safety of young drivers. According to the government, this could mean that young drivers could benefit from “improved training and lower insurance premiums” as a result.

The proposals were made on Monday 25 March at a summit for the motor insurance industry hosted by the DfT. Representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Department for Health, insurers and consumer organisation uSwitch were also present.

Fire stations to host driving tests

Plans to offer practical driving tests from fire stations were given the green light by Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond. Driving tests will be available from the Salford fire station in Greater Manchester every Tuesday and Thursday from 16 April. A number of other fire stations in the Manchester area could also offer tests in the future. All tests will be conducted by DSA examiners.

Kwik Fit identifies winter tyre gap in Theory Test questions

Over the last five days Kwik Fit has sold more than five times the number of winter tyres than the same time last week, as drivers have taken heed of severe weather warnings and made advance preparations.

Go-ahead for driving tests from Halfords

Plans to offer practical driving tests from branches of Halfords have been given the go ahead by Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond.

Driving tests will be available from the Halfords store in Wellingborough from Tuesday 5 February. Other branches of Halfords across the country are expected to start offering tests in coming months. All tests will be conducted by Driving Standards Agency (DSA) examiners.

Use the driving test to boost winter tyre knowledge, says Kwik Fit

Demand for winter tyres at Kwik Fit has quadrupled over the last four years, and the company anticipates a continued rise in orders. However the fast-fit network concedes that only a small number of UK motorists are purchasing season specific tyres and it says research shows that 68 per cent of drivers are uninformed about the differences between cold and warm weather tyres, while 23 per cent haven’t even heard of winter tyres.

Halfords to offer driving tests in DSA partnership

Driving tests could soon be available from branches of Halfords under plans announced by Road Safety Minister Mike Penning. As well as using traditional driving test centres, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is looking at working with public and private sector partners to provide driving test premises in selected areas that don't already have a local test centre.

Goodyear survey highlights poor knowledge of Highway Code

Results from the poll of 5,000 motorists showed a large percentage failed to correctly answer a number of general knowledge and picture questions covering The Highway Code. 48 per cent of those surveyed also didn’t know that the typical stopping distance for a car driving at 50mph is 53 metres or 13 car lengths. Nearly a fifth thought they could get away with 36 metres.

Evidence & Expert Opinion Backs Young Driver Initiative – Pirelli

In February the Young Driver programme, which Pirelli is a major sponsor of, received a measure of negative press after the publishing of comments by a Police Federation inspector and a RoSPA representative. Ken Clinton, head of road safety for the RoSPA, went as far as commenting that the scheme “will probably mean youngsters will take fewer lessons when they come to learn to drive, and if they take fewer lessons they will get less experience.” In defence of the scheme, Pirelli has responded that a flood of evidence supports the initiative and the positive impact it will have on reducing the number of road accidents across Britain.

Study Links Windscreen Stickers to Road Rage

If you wish to avoid becoming a victim of road rage, a recent study by Colorado State University suggests you could help yourself by not decorating your car with stickers. This unusual finding was reached following research that showed drivers with stickers or ornaments in their rear windscreen are more likely to drive in an aggressive, abrasive fashion. It was also found that such drivers are more likely to defend their road space and react angrily to drivers who encroach on them territorially.

Youngest UK WRC Competitor Enters Rally Wales

The youngest competitor ever to enter the UK round of the FIA World Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB, will use Yokohama tyres at this year’s event. Welsh teenager Tom Cave, who turned 17 just 18 days before the rally begins, recently carried out a two-day test using Yokohama tyres on his Group N Ford Fiesta ST and will be competing on the Japanese brand’s rubber at the WRC finale in December.

Cave has already made an impression on the rallying world; he has been rallying in Latvia for two years and is the inspiration for the Junior Rallying scheme to develop the next generation of British rally drivers. Latvia was chosen as it allows drivers from the age of 14 to compete in genuine rallies, the RallySprint and the National championships.
