Varta Launches Free Scrap Battery Scheme

Battery manufacturer Varta is launching what it describes as “an innovative, free of charge, scrap battery collection and incentive service.” The scheme is also billed as “an industry first.” The scheme, which is being run in partnership with Europe’s largest waste collection network, gives distributors the chance to collect and return batteries in compliance with legislative requirements and also to recover the value of the lead contained in each scrap battery.

New PCL Products at Autoteknik 2007

Sheffield’s PCL is set to receive significant European market exposure through the display of their latest tyre inflation products at Denmark’s Autoteknik 2007 in mid-March. The company’s exclusive distributor in Denmark, Folke Larsen, will unveil PCL’s new Accura 1 electronic preset unit and Airforce mechanical air line gauge.

Myers Boosts Sales, Profits

(Akron/Tire Review) Tyre and service tool distributor Myers Industries reported 2006 overall sales of $780.0 million, up 6% from 2005’s total sales of $736.9 million. Myers reported its 2006 net income was $28.7 million, up 48% from the year prior.

For its distribution segment, Myers reported 2006 sales of $197.3 million, up 4% year over year, and income before taxes of $22.2 million, 8% better than 2005.

Yokohama HPT Offers New Marque Specific Wheels

Yokohama HPT Ltd, UK distributor for numerous makes of alloy wheel, including TSW, Mangels and MAK, has added two more marque-specific brands to its portfolio – the Redbourne range, designed exclusively for Land Rover and Range Rover models, and August wheels, intended for the Audi range. Both ranges are manufactured in association with TSW.

Komei Appoints Sole UK Agent

Ecosystem Ltd has announced its appointment as sole UK agents for the Italian Komei range of recycling equipment. Komei specialise in the manufacture of granulation equipment for wood, plastic and rubber, and their 15600kg KG-1R granulator has been designed specifically for shredding used tyres. The features of this unit include a heat exchanger to maintain low temperatures for the rotor and counter blade, and the machine is powered by an 180kw motor.

Pirelli Control Tyre for Australian GTP

The Australian Performance Car Championship (GTP) is expected to be a more closely contested competition following the announcement that all cars in the series will be required to race on identical Pirelli “control” tyres. Series Organiser Craig Nayda announced that Pirelli motorsport distributor Trofeo Motorsport has won a tender to provide tyres and event technical support to GTP for the next three seasons.

Amtel-Vredestein Concede Conti Deal is Over

Amtel-Vredestein N.V. has confirmed that talks regarding cooperation in Russia with Germany’s Continental AG have been suspended.

The company further announced that it will consider opportunities to reduce its debt including attracting equity participation in, or spinning off, its AV-TO subsidiary, Russia’s leading auto parts tyre distributor and number one tyre retail centres network.

Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper had previously published the comments of an unnamed member of Continental AG’s board, who said that the “deal has died for now.”

South China Tire Expands Production to 15 million units

South China Tire, producer of Sunny and Wanli branded tyres, is to expand capacity to around 15 million tyres a year with a new plant. The first phase of the new plant began production in September 2006, and offers additional production of two million tyres (the total capacity is six million tyres). The total project will take up till 2012 to complete, with a final annual capacity of around 15 million tyres.
