Three New MAK Wheels to Hit UK Roads

The UK distributor for the Italian MAK range of replacement alloy wheels, Yokohama HPT Ltd, has announced three new models for the UK market. According to Yokohama HPT, the three new designs “capture the manufacturer’s flair for design” whilst epitomising MAK’s reputation for quality and longevity.

The first of the three wheels is the Volare, a design featuring 20 narrow spokes that spread from the mounting face right out to the edge of the wheel rim. A slight step at the rim is intended to increase the perception of size, and the combination of these two elements is said to lend the wheel a very contemporary, motorsport feel. The Volare comes in a range of sizes, beginning at 15-inch and running up to 9.5×19-inch, and is available in both four and five-stud patterns. Prices begin at £93.95 including VAT and the Volare features a mirror polished face with gunmetal body.

Compass Expands Warehouse 35%

Compass HD Tyres Ltd, part of the Compass Group Ltd, UK and Ireland distributor of GTRadial and Runway-brand tyres, is expanding its warehousing facilities still further. According to company officials a new 35,000 square foot facility will come on stream to add to the current 100,000 square foot of space at the Compass’ Huddersfield base. In addition, a number of extra sales and logistics staff are due to be recruited.

Tim Chesney, managing director of the Compass Group told Tyres & Accessories that the expansion of storage space is directly attributable to the ongoing success story of Giti produced tyres in the UK. The Company launched GT into Europe almost 20 years ago when it imported the first ever containers of the then fledgling car tyre brand with just seven sizes in the radial range. Today the GT Radial car tyre brand has many hundreds of sizes in its range, covering almost every popular size in car, van and 4X4 and it is a market leader in the mid range sector of the market with its development of UHP and other cutting edge tyre designs. Sales into the new car tyre replacement market have increased year-on-year and today, through Compass Group, GT produced tyre brands boast a market share in the UK that leads the market outside the premium sector.

Bridgestone/Towell Opens Truck Tyre Centre in Oman

Towell Auto Centre LLC, the exclusive distributor for Bridgestone tyres in Oman, has inaugurated its state-of-the-art truck tyre service centre at Ghala. The service centre was inaugurated by Hassan Kamer Sultan, chairman of Towell Auto Centre, and Hirotaka Migita, managing director of Bridgestone Middle East FZE. Mr Migita, said the new service centre is one of the first of its kind in Oman and is a sign of Bridgestone’s continuous commitment to Oman market and Bridgestone’s vision to get closer to the customers. More similar centres are expected in Oman following the move.

The new facility is said to be equipped with “world-class machinery” such as tubeless tyre fitment and balancing capabilities. “The tyre centre has been set up to meet the customer needs of quality tyres and professional skill which is safe and sure,” said Mohan Menon, national manager for sales, Towell Auto Centre. Bridgestone tyre service centres are currently located at Wadi Kabir, Ghoubra, Rusayl, Nizwa, Sur, Ibri and Salala in Oman.

Trelleborg Buys Solid Service Group in Australia

Trelleborg has signed an agreement to acquire the privately owned Australian specialty tyre distributor Solid Service Group, which has about 40 employees and annual sales of approximately £5 million. The acquisition is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter 2007.

Petron-Michelin Partnership Offers Free Fuel with Tyres

Petron, the Phillipine’s leading oil firm, has partnered with Michelin to offer consumers free fuel when tyres are purchases. From 1 August to 31 October 2007, Michelin tyre buyers will receive up to P1,000 (£10.44) worth of free Petron fuel gift certificates when they purchase Michelin tyres at participating dealers nationwide. A consumer buying a set of four tyres size 15-inches and above will be issued with P1,000 worth of Petron vouchers; while four 13 to 14 inches tyres gets P500 worth of vouchers; two tyres 15-inches and over also gets P500 worth of free fuel.

According to Riz Dalangin, Michelin country manager for the Philippines: “As a premium brand, Michelin chose to partner with Petron in this promotional activity as we would like to be able to offer greater value to Filipino consumers. Petron’s market leadership signifies that it is the preferred fuel of the majority of motorists nationwide, and we know our buyers will appreciate the complimentary fuel certificates from Petron.”

Bush to Promote PCL Brand Name in North America

That’s Eric Bush – Pneumatic Components Ltd’s new North America Regional Manager, Tire Gauge (USA and Canada). Recently recruited by PCL, the leading international manufacturer and supplier of tyre inflation equipment, to build brand awareness within the US and Canadian markets, Eric will be based in Virginia and is now in the process of developing a sales & distribution service for PCL throughout North America.

Eric graduated from Virginia Tech in 1998 with a degree in Marketing Management. He began his career as a Regional Sales Manager for Ingersoll-Rand’s Tool & Hoist Division, before working in Alabama for a tool distributor, Tool-Smith Company. More recently Eric was in Atlas Copco’s Tool Division – Motor Vehicle Industry, before joining PCL.

Yokohama HPT Clinches Another Championship

The UK distributor for Yokohama tyres, Yokohama HPT, has helped clinch another motorsport championship this year. Tristan Pye has won the Group N class of the BTRDA Rally Championship with two rounds to go, in his Yokohama-shod Subaru Impreza N11 rally car. The series is currently in its 54th year and comprises three awards split across a range of classes. This season is Tristan’s second using Yokohama tyres. So far he has taken class wins on five of the seven events he has competed in and is now uncatchable in the Group N category of the series.

Pye cites the Yokohama tyres as a major factor in his success this year. “I’ve been running Yokohama tyres this year as well as last year and find they work very well. I have tried other tyres but to be honest, even if I wasn’t supported in my efforts by Yokohama, I’d pay to use their tyres!

“It’s not only the tyres themselves which impress though; the back-up I get from Yokohama HPT is second to none. The pre-event work, as well as the input from the specialists who go to every event is invaluable to us on the stages. They always seem to know which tyres will work best.”

Yokohama HPT Partners With MK Dons Football Team

The UK distributor for Yokohama tyres and TSW, MAK plus a range of marque-specific replacement alloy wheels, Yokohama HPT Ltd, has become a partner to the Milton Keynes-based football team, the MK Dons. The partnership will see Yokohama logos displayed at the MK Dons’ brand new 31,000-seat stadium in Milton Keynes and will allow Yokohama HPT to support the team from its own box at the stadium during home games.

The MK Dons are eagerly anticipating the start of the new football season this weekend and with it, the commissioning of the brand-new multi-million pound StadiumMK. The US manufacturer of recycling equipment Granutech-Saturn Systems and its Cheshire based dealer/distributor BTR Group are working together to provide equipment and design expertise to tyre processors throughout the UK. Their latest sales and installations include:

With the goal of making steel free granules smaller than 15mm from whole truck and car tyres, Bury’s Wheeldon Brothers Waste commissioned a two-stage process Granutech-Saturn tyre granulation system. The system features a Saturn Model 60-44BGHT tyre shredder with 300hp hydraulic drive system and the Granutech Model 80 Grizzly, a stage-two grinder that effectively separates steel from the tyre rubber while keeping operating costs at a minimum. Plans are currently in the works to expand the processing side of the system to reduce material to as small as 0.5mm.

The Sumo Firenza is reportedly steadily increasing its sales performance in both the UK and European tyre markets and is now considered to be increasingly favoured as a highly competitive choice in the truck tyre sector of the market.

MNA Testing Hydrogen-Fueled Lift Trucks

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America is testing hydrogen-powered lift trucks at one of its tyre plants in South Carolina. The summer-long test is being run at several South Carolina manufacturers by hydrogen fuel cell maker Hydrogenics, equipment distributor LiftOne and lift truck maker Linde.

“Michelin is committed to excellence in the area of environmental responsibility, especially in conjunction with promising, innovative technologies,” said Raul Fernandez, site manager at MNA’s Lexington, S.C., plant. “While the results of this trial won’t be known until the completion of the evaluation period, we are hopeful that this technology for forklift applications will prove to be both practical and environmentally sound.”

Deldo Shows Wanli Run-Flat

Deldo caught attention recently with the premier of its brand new Wanli run-flat tyre. Deldo representatives told T&A during the Autopromotec that this will be the first Chinese run-flat tyre in the European market. Deldo is also the exclusive distributor of Wanli, Sunny and Fortuna tyres for the European market, and has been since 2002.

Deldo was present with a large booth of approximately 80 square metres. Company representative are reportedly “very happy with the atmosphere and quantity and quality of the visitors.” Besides the large number of Italian customers there were a lot of international people at the show. Deldo has been doing business in Italy for many years. At this moment, Deldo is active with four salesmen in the market and sales are growing step by step.

The company also showed the 26” in Wanli (305/30 R26) tyre. The launch of this product follows increased dialogue between Deldo and South China Tire and the well-known test centre, TUV Germany. According to the company, South China Tire is investing more and more in technology and new developments. Wanli is currently available in more than 200 sizes.
