Michelin Saves Fuel for Haulier

Shepton Mallet-based Framptons Transport Services Ltd has identified an average fuel saving of 0.24 mpg (nearly three per cent) on its ERF ECT tractor units, following a trial of Michelin Energy tyres, which are designed for trucks operating primarily on major roads and motorways. The trial saw two tractor units fitted with 315/70 R22.5 A2 Energy tyres as original equipment in 2004, with the fuel economy carefully monitored for a period of 18 months. Fuel consumption was measured against identical vehicles in the fleet operating on Michelin’s ‘E’ segment tyres.

Interstate Tires Appoints Chinese Distributor

Interstate Tires has appointed a new distributor for its brand in China. During an official meeting last week, Theo de Vries (Vice President, Interstate Tires) and Mr. Yao (CEO, Tiger) agreed on a long-term co-operation, whereby Tiger will distribute Interstate tyres in China, both in its own retail stores as well as wholesaling throughout China. Said Theo de Vries: “I am very pleased with our agreement with this new distributor in China. We have already built up our distribution in Malaysia and other Far Eastern countries, however China was still open. Now we have a close co-operation and a good, solid base in China. I am very confident that this professional distributor will contribute to the growing success of Interstate Tires.” Interstate will provide commercial back-up with advertising, marketing and promotional support and the company also has hired a Chinese sales manager.

PCL to Debut Safeflow at AirTech

New 4×4 Tyres From BFGoodrich

BFGoodrich, seven times winner of the Dakar Rally since 1999, is poised to introduce a number of new 4×4 tyres to its range in 2006. These are the All-Terrain T/A Comp, aimed at off-road rallying competitors, the Krawler T/A® KX, scheduled for launch in Europe in May, plus four new dimensions for the Macadam T/A.

Alaskan Mines Feeling Pinch of OTR Tyre Shortage

(Akron/Tire Review) According to a recent article in The Anchorage Daily News, the worldwide shortage of OTR tyres is forcing Alaskan mining operations to look for new ways to extend tyre life. The Alaskan newspaper reported that “vendors” are saying the situation is so bad that an international black market is emerging, new trucks and earthmovers are being sold without tyres, buyers are paying new-tyre prices for retreads and some companies are buying used equipment just for the tyres.

Ryder Extends Contract With Bridgestone and Truck Point

Bridgestone and Ryder have announced a further extension to their partnership. This involves a contract extension well into 2007. Under the arrangement, Bridgestone UK will supply replacement and retread truck tyres and tyre services though its national Truck Point service network.

Greg Ward, Bridgestone UK Commercial director, said: “Our long-term relationship with Ryder and our ability to offer a comprehensive service package of original equipment, replacement and retreaded tyres as well as value-added services are key to this new agreement. We are delighted that our partnership with Ryder has been extended again.”

Marangoni Appoints Brand Manager

Marangoni, has announced the appointment of Greg Graham as Brand Manager. The role will be predominantly UK based, with responsibilities across additional English speaking countries. The appointment follows Marangoni’s new distribution partnership with leading UK wholesaler, Group Tyre (UK) Ltd, and further signals the manufacturer’s intent to aggressively increase its market share of the UK car tyre market.

Varta Lands OE Contracts

A high proportion of the new cars launched at the recent Geneva Motor Show and set to reach the UK market shortly feature Varta calcium-silver and AGM batteries as original equipment. Varta claims a share of more than half the European OE market. Among the new cars with Varta as OE are two high-performance coupes from two of the UK’s most famous marques; the Jaguar XK8 and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

Cooper Hires Long to Aid Global Supply Chain

(Akron/Tire Review) Jerry Long has joined Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. as an unnamed position “to assist in the worldwide integration of Cooper’s global supply chain network,” according to the company. Long’s responsibilities will include global purchasing, warehousing and distribution, logistics and transportation and planning. He is an 18-year veteran with Dana Corp. with domestic and international experience in finance, accounting and manufacturing.

Unipart to Supply Exhausts to Kwik-Fit

Unipart Automotive has won a multi million pound deal to supply exhausts to Kwik-Fit. Unipart Automotive has consolidated its position as Kwik-Fit’s preferred supplier of automotive parts following its success in winning the exhaust distribution business from competitor UKPA.

Under the new expanded agreement the Unipart Automotive network of branches will supply and distribute Arvin exhausts on a same day basis, Aftermarket News has reported. The announcement sees the extension of Unipart Automotive’s current distribution contract, which already includes a full range of parts from brakes to workshop consumables.

Crypton Announces Moves Towards Expansion into Global Market

Crypton Technology Group has announced some internal restructuring plans designed to assist with its growth strategy in the global garage equipment market. Ian Garwood, who was recently promoted to sales manager of Traction Chargers, will now also be responsible for the Crypton, Dieseltune and Wheelforce brands in the US, South America and Canada. Geoff Cross in his role as Sales Development Manager will also widen his duties to include generating a European market entry and growth strategy in conjunction with the current Export team already in place at Crypton Technology Groups’ headquarters in Bridgwater in Somerset.

RMA Adds 100 Green Dealers

The Retread Manufacturers Association (RMA) has expanded the membership of its Green Dealer Scheme for tyre retailers who stock retreaded tyres. Following an in-depth research and recruitment campaign, the Association has added over 100 new outlets to its list of passenger retread stockists, bringing the total number of retail outlets listed under the scheme is 319.

New Appointment at Amtel-Vredestein Voronezh Tire Complex

Amtel-Vredestein N.V. has appointed Victor Tuluk as general director of Amtel-Chernozemye Tire Production Complex in Voronezh. He replaces Vyacheslav Chemerinsky.

Vyachelsav Chemerinsky, who leaves the company to pursue other interests, will remain a member of the board of directors at Amtel-Chernozemye. He is also a deputy of the Voronezh Duma. “Vyachelsav has expertly managed the arduous task of bringing our Voronoezh facility into the 21st century. We are grateful he will remain on the plant’s board,” said Amtel-Vredestein CEO, Alexei Gurin.
