Van Essche New Goodyear Europe Retread Manager

Goodyear’s European operation, Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe, has appointed former Bandag Europe executive Danny van Essche to the position of retread manager EU. Mr. van Essche joined the company on February 1, and is based at Goodyear’s European head office in Brussels.

The position of retread manager EU was held by David McMillan until his sudden death last year, and van Essche joins the company following a decade at Bandag EMEA, where he was employed as director of marketing. He left the retreader in September 2006, taking with him considerable experience in the managing of fleet programmes, developing dealer networks and distribution management, and developing new product lines.

Dębica Launches Passio 2 Mileage Tyre

Dębica has launched a new passenger car tyre aimed at the mileage market. The Dębica Passio 2 summer tyre is the latest addition to the Passio product line, which is one of the most popular summer tyres in Poland, according to the Polish manufacturer (owned by the Goodyear group).

Dębica Passio 2 is said to offer a 16 per cent higher mileage performance than its predecessor. According to the manufacturer, the tyre shows improved performance in almost all characteristics, including driving and braking on wet surfaces as well as higher resistance to aquaplaning. Consequently, Dębica Passio 2 offers compact and mid-size cars improved performance on all road surfaces.

One Million KM and Still Rolling with Michelin

How much mileage do you expect from your tyres? 40,000 kilometres? Does 100,000 kilometres sound impressive? That’s chicken feed for Samworth Brothers – a MAN TGA 6×2 tractor unit belonging to the Plymouth based food distribution company has clocked up a cool million on the same set of Michelin XDE2 drive axle tyre casings.

The company achieved this admirable performance by following Michelin’s Four Lives tyre policy and through stringent tyre maintenance managed in-house by its own Michelin-trained technicians. Not wishing to claim all credit for the Methuselah-like longevity of the XDE2 casings, Michelin adds that the high professional standards of the Samworth Brothers company drivers also made a difference.

Car Dealers and Fast Fits Charge 50% More than Independents

New research produced by Birmingham-based aftermarket research specialists, Encircle Marketing, shows that car dealerships are able to sell tyres at up to 50 per cent more than local retailers. According to the data, details of which are exclusively published in this month’s Tyres & Accessories, the “average” UK passenger car tyre costs £79.79, with only fast fits and car dealership exceeding this ceiling – charging averages of £89.72 and £94.21 respectively.

The report confirms the widely publicised belief that local dealerships sell tyres at the cheapest prices in the market (£62.62), 15 per cent lower than average. The data T&A has seen doesn’t draw any conclusions as to why garages and fast-fits are able to charge prices roughly 50 per cent higher than local independents.

HPC Buys Economatics Compressed Air Operation

HPC plc has announced that it has completed the purchase of the Compressed Air activities of Economatics Industrial Limited. The purchase includes the sales and service divisions of the Economatics branches in Sheffield, Leicester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Welwyn Garden City and Salford, but excludes Marshall Branson in Hebburn.

“Having supported Economatics in supplying cost effective, industry leading compressed air equipment, parts and service for almost 40 years, we are pleased to have completed this acquisition and are delighted to welcome the compressed air staff and customers of Economatics to HPC” said Trevor Stott, Managing Director of HPC Compressed Air Systems. Tyrexpo Asia 2009 Opens for Business 6 Months Early

Tyrexpo Asia 2009 organiser, ECI International, has distributed more than 10,000 thousand brochures about the seventh staging of the popular tyre and equipment show. The exhibition will again take place in the Singapore Expo Centre, but the dates have been brought forward by six months to 24-26 March 2009. Traditionally held in September, the show has opted for the earlier dates to secure an exclusive slot in the increasingly-congested Asian exhibition calendar. The move is also designed to give exhibitors and visitors greater flexibility in scheduling their marketing and exhibition activity for the year. 45 per cent of exhibitors have already decided to appear again in 2009.

Hakkapeliitta Truck E Points to New Truck Tyre Range

Nokian Tyres introduced the Hakkapeliitta Truck E a new tyre for trucks and buses, designed for the most demanding winter conditions. This new winter drive tyre is also the first member of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta Truck product family. The tyre’s tread design features more than 1,100 efficient transverse sipes, forming a dense network that helps maximise grip. The tyre is also equipped with special sipe activators that are very sensitive to the road surface and rapidly activate the sipes, particularly in changing temperatures and road conditions.

“Nokian Hakkapeliitta Truck E is the result of years of intensive work; it’s a new-generation product that combines the excellent grip and resistance properties that professional drivers value very highly,” says Teppo Siltanen, Product Manager, Nokian Truck Tyres. Development work drew on the experiences of the highly commended Nokian Noktop 41 traction surface and the Nokian NTR-817 truck tyre.

BFNT’s Gamauf to Retire

The vice-president of Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire (BFNT), John K. Gamauf, will retire from the company effective as of May 1, 2008. Gamauf, who also holds the office of president, Consumer Replacement Tire Sales, will be replaced by John Baratta, who currently serves as vice president, North American Consumer Tires Sales, BFNT. Baratta’s successor has yet to be named. Gamauf will continue to serve on BFNT’s board of directors.

Fowler Welch Coolchain Gives Michelin the Thumbs Up

Specialist food distribution company Fowler Welch Coolchain has reported an increase in operating hours and less tyre related breakdowns after switching to a Michelin X-Terminal T tyre policy for its fleet of Terberg tugs. The company operates tugs across its five distribution hubs to move trailers on and off loading bays. The move to a Michelin policy follows a six-month tyre trial using a Terberg RT222 tug fitted with X-Terminal T tyres. This in-house trial saw the Michelin-shod tug carefully monitored, with weekly tyre inspections to check for wear and damage.

New Timax Catalogue Published

January 2008 sees the launch issue 22 of the Timax catalogue from Klarius UK Ltd, listing the company’s full range of Timax emission control products. One key change is that since the company takeover in 2007, the Timax replacement exhaust brand now features prominently on the front cover, replacing Arvin. Klarius acquired the European Light Vehicle Aftermarket division of ArvinMeritor in August 2007. The acquisition included the manufacture and distribution of all emission control products including, in the UK, Timax exhausts and MetalCat & EuroCat catalytic converters.

Stapleton’s Invests in New Delivery Vans

Following the relocation of two of its regional distribution centres to larger premises and the opening of a brand new warehouse, Stapleton’s has expanded its fleet of delivery vans. The 20 Renault Master and six Isuzu 7.5 ton vans will join the 40 vans that were introduced at the end 2006, bringing the Company’s delivery fleet to 179 vehicles. Commenting on the additional vans, Steve Parker, Stapleton’s trading director says: “By relocating stock to larger facilities and commissioning a brand new warehouse in Biggleswade, we have increased our capacity and improved stock levels. With increased stock, we can offer customers improved availability so it is vital that we are able to continue to deliver a fast, efficient and reliable delivery service with greater flexibility in terms of delivery options.” Stapleton’s fleet of vehicles offers nationwide deliveries on a twice-a-day, same-day or next-day delivery basis depending on individual customer requirements. Steve Parker continued: “During the warehouse moves, we also implemented new technology and picking systems further improving efficiency and delivery turnaround for customers.”

Lion Forest to buy 70% of Silverstone

Lion Forest Industries Bhd (LFIB) is reportedly proposing to buy up to 70.64 per cent of Silverstone Corporation Bhd (SCB) two years after its proposal to acquire the latter’s tyre business was rejected by the local Securities Commission despite an appeal. LFIB said the proposed debt acquisition would allow the group to secure a substantial portion of the SCB debts at discounts of not less than 40, 80 and 95 per cent from their nominal value. “The acquisitions would position LFIB as a major stakeholder in SCB by holding approximately up to 70.64 per cent stake in the SCB debts,” the company said.
