Continental Appoints New UHP Sales Development Manager

Continental Tyres has appointed Jason Stephenson as sales development manager for Ultra High Performance tyres. The role looks into all aspects of Continental’s ultra high performance (UHP) business bringing together marketing, supply chain and sales with a view to maximising Continental’s presence in the UHP market.

Prior to taking up this position Stephenson spent over five years as an account manager in the tyre industry having worked across all channels of distribution. Before that, he held sales and marketing positions in other industries including direct marketing and publishing.

Karl Naylor New Grouptyre MD

Grouptyre has appointed Karl Naylor as Managing Director following the departure of Peter Harries, who has left to take up a key opportunity elsewhere within the tyre industry. During 14 months with Grouptyre, Harries has worked on processes designed to build upon the company’s leading role in the tyre wholesaling industry. In this period Grouptyre has enjoyed sales growth of over 15 per cent.

Kumho to Focus on Regional Truck Sector

Kumho’s current focus in the truck tyre segment is on the development of new products for the regional market. With this in mind, the company says that it is following closely the evolution of distribution trends. Today’s market sees the haulier faced with an increasingly complex network of routes, comprising many different road types and surfaces. As a result, the wear rates on tyres in these operations are inevitably higher than in long-haul, mainly motorway, usage. Recognising that durability and wear performance are two key factors influencing operators in their choice of tyres, Kumho is introducing new steer, drive and trailer patterns which provide a very competitive package in cost-per-mile terms.

The Longmark KRS 03 steer and KRD 02 drive axle tyres specifically address the problem of increased wear rates. Each has a wide, deep tread pattern which aims to give tyres longer life and increased driving stability in all highway applications. A newly-developed casing design reduces stress points and heat build-up, also to improve durability. The S-shaped sipes of the KRS 03 are designed to produce enhanced wet grip, stability and handling, while the KRD 02’s sturdy tread blocks result in more effective traction and braking in all weather conditions.

According to Euro Car Parts, Britain’s largest independent distributor of car parts and accessories, the company stocks the most comprehensive range of exhaust and catalytic converters available in the UK. A range of more than 6,000 exhaust references and 2,000 catalytic converter references are kept at their Central Distribution Centre at Wembley. Furthermore, more than 2,000 exhaust references and 400 cat references are kept at selected branches around the UK.

Student’s Discovery Removes Zinc Oxide from Tyre Manufacturing

Research conducted by a South African PhD student could prove a boon to the global tyre industry. While working on his chemistry doctorate, Robert Bosch, 32, from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth discovered a means by which Zinc Oxide can be replaced as a catalyst in tyre manufacturing, a much sought after substitution.

The global tyre manufacturing industry uses 600,000 tonnes of highly toxic Zinc Oxide each year. The substance is poisonous to aquatic organisms and accumulates in the environment. The newly discovered chemical compound catalyst, Rubber Nano Products Liquid Activation (RNPX), is said to be environmentally friendly and only one third of the volume of Zinc Oxide is necessary to do the same job.

First European Sales of Laugfs Solid Tyres

Europe received its first shipment of tyres from Sri Lanka’s Laugfs Rubber Corporation in early September. The European market thus joins the company’s growing international network, which includes a holding company in Hong Kong and distribution centres in North America, Canada, Australia and the Middle East.

Michelin Launches New Agricultural Tyre

Michelin has announced the launch of its latest series of agricultural tyres. The OmniBib 70 series represents the company’s attempt to help enhance farm productivity through addressing the specific challenges facing today’s farmers. In addition to the launch of the tyre, Michelin is aiming to address the issue of tyre pressure in agricultural equipment.

Promoting the OmniBib, a tyre designed to leave behind a 16 per cent wider footprint than its closest rival, the company says that a more flexible sidewall, rounded shoulders, the special lug shape and – crucially – 12 per cent lower pressure will cause less rutting (the creation of highly compacted soil within tyre tracks), which will therefore allow more even crop distribution in addition to fuel and time savings.

Titan Wheels Australia’s Indonesian Operation Commences

Titan Europe has announced that its Titan Wheels Australia Pty Ltd subsidiary has commenced operations in Balikpapan Kalimantan, Indonesia. The business operation will trade as PT Titan Wheels Indonesia and will initially run as a sales and distribution outlet for products manufactured and marketed by Titan Wheels Australia. Company personnel will also be trained in the non destructive testing and wheel repair business.

Continental Wins MAN Trucknology Supplier Award

Continental Truck Tyres has won the Trucknology Supplier Award presented by MAN. Marking the award the MAN Nutzfahrzeuge citation noted: Continental AG’s “enormous reliability in terms of meeting deadlines and maintaining quality,” adding: “Furthermore, Continental has often been able to intervene at short notice where supply shortages have arisen, and thus played a major role in ensuring that we had tyres for all our vehicles in 2007.”

MAN grants a Trucknology Supplier Award to up to 10 suppliers every year, evaluating reliability, efficiency, innovation, technical competence, quality, cost, and logistics. Vehicle development and tyre design are coordinated from the outset to ensure that new products can roll out on time.

Boughey Distribution Chooses Michelin

Michelin’s X One MaxiTrailer tyre has been chosen by Wardle-based Boughey Distribution to be fitted exclusively across 100 Montracon and 30 Schmitz Cargobull tri-axle trailers. The trailers are currently being delivered to the company, becoming a significant proportion of Boughey’s fleet.

Designed to deliver up to 50 per cent more mileage than standard 385/65 R 22.5 XTE2, each new 455/45 R 22.5 X One MaxiTrailer tyre benefits from Infinicoil architecture, one of the key innovations of Michelin Durable Technologies. The Infinicoil consists of a single, 400 m-long steel cord wrapped around the crown, delivering unrivalled robustness, greater longevity and very even wear. Compared to a 385/65 R 22.5, the tread band is also 120 millimetres wider and has 35 per cent more rubber in the compound, the feature which allows the tyre to claim such an advantage over the XTE2.

The machine combines the functions of an impact and a torque wrench in one product: why take two wrenches into the workshop, indeed? The company is a global leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of innovative aftermarket tools, accessories and compressors. Its BlueTork range is designed to be the most advanced family of wheel fastening tools in the aftermarket industry today.

BFNA Closes Warehouse

Bridgestone Firestone North America has closed its south-eastern distribution centre in Georgia in anticipation of the opening of a new warehouse in Jacksonville, Florida. The new facility is twice as big as its Georgia counterpart, which held up to 480,000 tyres and employed 100.

Local news sources have reported that three of the Georgia warehouse’s employees applied for jobs at the new facility, but were told that “they wouldn’t be a good fit” in Florida. Meanwhile a manager at the original plant reportedly moved his office to Florida without telling anybody.

Kraiburg and Nortenha See EM Potential

Kraiburg, the Austrian-based supplier of retreading materials and equipment, has been working in partnership with Portuguese retreader, and ex-Recamic licensee, Nortenha since the beginning of 2007.

As well as co-operating closely in the heavy truck tyre retreading segment, both companies see great potential for more intensified co-operation in the earthmover segment; a segment which Kraiburg Sales & Marketing Director Holger Düx was highlighted on the company’s stand at this year’s Essen show.

With its newly-established EM segment, Kraiburg says that it is now one of the few suppliers to cover all processes, i.e. the precure, mould cure and smooth and groove processes. Northenha recently invested in these segments, adding a 300,000 euros robot-controlled “MGT One 63″ buffing machine, including a peeling and grooving unit, plus a new extruder and autoclave. These investments mean that smooth and groove and precure retreading can now be offered for tyre sizes of up to 57”.

Bridgestone Bandag Honoured for Outstanding Delivery Services

In recognition of its 100 per cent on time delivery and 100 per cent delivery accuracy, Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions (BBTS) has received a Delivery Achievement Award from Hino Motors Manufacturing. The award acknowledges BBTS truck and bus tyre deliveries to Hino’s assembly plants in North America for 2007.

Cragar Wheel Brand Sold to Investors

Investors Brad and Jeff Danbom have purchased the assets of Cragar Industries Inc. from Global Entertainment Corp. The Danboms plan to move the company’s headquarters and operations from Tempe, Arizona, to Milford, Iowa.

The company’s existing distribution network will remain intact, according to Brad Danbom. “We plan on being much more aggressive with building brand equity and building relationships with the customers. We are also big believers in organic growth through new product development,” he says.
