IGA "disappointed" at MOT decision

"The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is disappointed at the Department for Transport’s (DfT) decision not to raise the standard MOT fee this year" said Stuart James, IGA director. The DfT have decided that during 2012 the set price for an MOT will remain at £54.85.

James continued: The majority of MOT test stations are small to medium sized businesses that are currently battling with increasing costs and declining revenue. The increase in cost would allow these already struggling businesses to recoup some of the revenue."

Consultation shows opposition to MOT changes

More than nine out of ten people who responded to the Government’s own "red-tape challenge" and who raised the MOT issue opposed proposals to reduce testing frequency, according to DfT papers released today.

The Government consulted the public on vehicle safety and standards as part of its review of road transport regulations in May and June this year. More than three-quarters of respondents raised the issue of the MOT but less than five per cent of those (and less than three per cent of all respondents) supported changing frequency.

The incidence of car accidents on wet roads during winter months in the UK leaps by a staggering 267 per cent, according to DfT figures. In response, TyreSafe is providing information on cold weather tyres. TyreSafe recommends that UK drivers visit their local fast fit dealer or independent tyre retailer to discuss the option of fitting cold weather tyres for winter months. Cold weather tyres have been developed by most large tyre manufacturers and whilst the market for this type of tyre in the UK is currently small (less than one per cent of the total UK replacement market), cold weather tyres are becoming increasingly popular across the rest of Europe.
