Conti Summarises European Winter Tyre Laws

It’s getting cold out there, and tyre maker Continental notes “there are no Europe-wide regulations for winter tyres in sight.” So until the day when nations throughout the region are encouraged to sign up to the tyre world’s equivalent of EMU, those planning to take their vehicles across the Channel during the coming cold months need to study up on the various national regulations in effect. Fortunately, Continental has made such swotting easier by outlining the winter tyre rules currently in effect in Europe.

Toyota Celebrates 20 Millionth Sale In Europe

Toyota recently celebrated the sale of its 20 millionth vehicle in Europe, just 10 years after recording its 10 millionth sale in the continent. The company's entry into the European market began in 1963, supplying 190 Crown models to a distributor in Denmark. Today, Toyota has nine production plants in Europe, building vehicles, engines and transmissions, as well as R&D, design and training centres. The company's investment in its European operations stands at 1.2 billion Euros and it employs around 3,000.

NDI Launches AP-Wheels.com

NDI has announced that wheel business AP Wheels has now launched a new website, www.ap-wheels.com. Marketing the site as “a strong link with the European agricultural sector,” NDI pointed out that the Danish company has become the largest importer of industrial tyres in Northern Europe. “NDI is a leading supplier of a full range of wheel solutions that meets the needs of agriculture and modern industry and we have nearly 40 years’ experience, initially in importing and subsequently in the production of AP Wheels. This know-how has been channelled into the manufacture of AP Wheels, a top-quality product widely used in the European agriculture sector,” said Carsten Andersen, export manager at NDI.

Nankang Launches Motorcycle Range

At the Intermot exhibition, held in the German city of Cologne, Nankang Rubber Tire has shown off its first-ever motorcycle tyre. Aimed at the growing sport touring segment, the radial Roadiac WF-1 is said to be the product of three years’ intensive joint development work between Nankang and Delticom/Pnebo.

Avon Storm 2 Ultra Lauded for Longevity

Avon Tyres’ Storm 2 Ultra sports-touring tyre has received praise from a round-the-world adventure and one of Britain’s leading motorcycle magazines. Mick Høy from Denmark is in the middle of a round-the-world adventure on his 1996 Honda VFR750 and he has good reason to appreciate the qualities of the new-for-2010 Storm 2 Ultra. “Back home in Denmark I can get around 10-12,000km (6210 – 7452 miles) from one rear tyre,” he comments. “During my travels through Africa from Spain I did 19,827km (12,312 miles) on one rear Storm 2 Ultra – crazy, but true! And the VFR weighs 450 kilos when fully loaded.

NDI, Nordexx Joins ITMA

The Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association has welcomed its second new member in less than a month. Nordexx, the house brand name of Britain’s NDI Tyre & Tube Supplies and of Denmark’s Nordisk Daek Import A – S has been welcomed by ITMA director Peter Taylor, who described NDI’s joining as further validation of the services ITMA provide to its members in what are very challenging times.

Starco Promotes Growing Wheel Business at Reifen 2010

It’s only about a year since Tyres & Accessories visited Starco Europe’s head office in Denmark, so it came as a surprise to discover how much activity has occurred within the company in the months between our last interview and the Reifen 2010 show in Essen. Starco Europe group marketing manager Brian Lorentzen explained that recent developments are opening up a whole new market segment for Starco, and while it is not turning its back on the traditional business of smaller tyres for manually driven vehicles, the company now offers aftermarket customers much, much more.

Al Dobowi to Devote Space to Westlake

While tyrepress.com already reported that the Westlake brand would be represented by its Central European distributor, Diamond Tire, the Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber manufactured brand will also be in Hall 3 at Reifen 2010. The Westlake tyre portfolio is distributed by Eskay Tyres, which is part of the Dubai-based Al Dobowi Group, which promises Westlake will be a “focal” point of its stand – Hall 3, Stand 229.

NDI to Launch New Nordexx Private Brand

Leading Danish tyre wholesale operation, Nordisk Daek Import A-S (NDI), has announced plans to launch a new private brand called Nordexx at the Reifen 2010 exhibition. Talking to Tyres & Accessories, NDI export manager Carsten Andersen explained that the new product range, which is aimed at the passenger car and van markets, will initially be available in 40 popular 13 to 18-inch summer sizes and 20 more aimed at the winter tyre market.

Barry Stocker Appointed Sales Director for Genan

Denmark-based Genan Business & Development A/S, which purports to be the world’s largest tyre recycling company, has appointed Barry Stocker as sales director for UK and Ireland. According to the company the appointment took effect on 1 February 2010. At the time Stocker was president of the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) and member of the UK Tyre Working Group, however Tyres & Accessories understands that the association has since appointed a new president and will shortly release a statement confirming this. Prior to joining Genan Stocker was commercial director for Murfitts Industries Ltd and spent most of his professional career within tyre recycling in the UK.

Eldan Opens New German/Austrian/Swiss Office

Danish recycling and separation technology company Recycling A/S has opened a new sales office in Düsseldorf and appointed Dieter Jerschl as sales manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Dieter Jerschl joined Eldan on 1 April. In conjunction with company’s existing sales partner, Erich Niebuhr BmbH in Rheinland-Pfalz, Dieter Jerschl will coordinate all international sales activities in the Germany/Austria/Switzerland region.

BKT Shows Off 5 New Lines

During last November’s Agritechnica 2009 show in Germany, off-road tyre specialist BKT displayed no less than five new product lines. These additions to an agricultural range that began with the company’s first 85 series Agrimax tractor tyre some six years ago are the result of Balkrishna Tyres’ stated strategy of continually introducing products that cover all the needs of the agricultural market. Such a strategy is hardly surprising when considering that agricultural tyres currently account for around 60 per cent of BKT’s sales.

Goodyear EfficientGrip OE on Electric Renault Fluence

The prototype tyre containing the BioIsoprene technology developed by Goodyear and Genencor is gaining much attention at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, yet Goodyear points out that products it has already made available to consumers are also represented at the high profile event. The tyre major notes that journalists covering the conference are being transported around the Danish capital in a pre-production example of the electric-powered Renault Fluence Z.E. fitted with its EfficientGrip tyres.

NDI UK “Working Even Closer” with Danish HQ

Less than 12 months ago NDI UK was operating as a regional wholesaler around its base in the West Midlands, but now its Danish headquarters – one of Scandinavia’s largest tyre and wheel distribution groups, Nordisk Daek Import A-S – has its eyes on a larger goal. Managing Director, Ian Smith states, “we are now concentrating on working even closer with our headquarter base in Denmark in order to encompass all market sectors ranging from small implement tyres up to larger earthmover designs offering a nationwide service throughout the UK.”

NDI UK: A New Competitive Option for Truck Tyres

Since the beginning of 2009, West Midlands based NDI UK has been evolving from a small regional tyre wholesaler/distributor into a nationwide tyre wholesaling option. According to the company, this progression can be directly attributed to the fact that it is part of one of Europe’s most competitive tyre distribution groups – Nordisk Daek Import A-S in Denmark. Ian Smith, managing director of NDI UK commented: “Up to the end of 2008, the company had been well known throughout the West Midlands but now we intend to work more closely with NDI Denmark in order to gradually become a respected wholesaler specialising in all market sectors from a small implement tyre right through to large earthmover patterns serving the entire UK market. Like NDI Denmark we intend to develop into a fully active multi-brand specialist offering a competitive combination of major ‘A’ brands plus numerous mid-range brands to suit all applications.”
