Lay-offs may last 12 months, Nokian confirms

In November, Nokian Tyres reported weakening demand for its heavy tyres and its intention to scale back production. Following statutory negotiations, which ended on 12 December, Nokian Heavy Tyres Ltd confirmed it will alter the main working pattern for heavy tyre production to a discontinued five-day, three-shift model and temporarily lay off employees. Around 260 employees will be laid off for a maximum of 12 months, with lay-offs taking place during 2012 and the duration for each employee decided upon according to their work tasks and the development of order intake over the course of the year.

Wheel separation risk prompts major Ford recall

A wheel and tyre-related issue has prompted the Ford Motor Company to recall up to almost 130,000 vehicles in the US. The manufacturer has informed government safety body the NHTSA that it is recalling certain 2010 and 2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models, specifically vehicles equipped with 17-inch steel wheels that were built between 1 and 30 April 2009 and from 1 December 2009 through to 13 November 2010.

Cooper Findlay talks to resume

According to local newspaper The Courier, negotiations to end the lockout at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Findlay plant in the US will resume on 13 December. As was the case for the previous, failed talks, the next round of negotiations will include a federal mediator. Whether these fresh talks will deliver results is far from certain, however – neither party has voiced a willingness to compromise its existing bargaining position.

Former Cooper Albany workers back on the job

Workers made redundant in 2009 when Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. closed its plant in Albany, Georgia are back at work with the company, Tire Review reports. According to news from Albany television station WALB-TV, the ex-Albany employees were among a group of temporary workers Cooper hired to operate its Findlay plant.

Union files charges over Cooper Findlay lockout

On 6 December the United Steelworkers International union and its Findlay, Ohio branch, Local 207L, filed charges against Cooper Tire & Rubber with US government agency the National Labor Relations Board. The charges allege Cooper Tire committed “unfair labour practices in bargaining and imposing a lockout” at its Findlay tyre plant, the USW reports.

Goodyear declares dividend on 5.875% preferred stock

Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s directors have declared a quarterly dividend of 73.44 cents per share of mandatory convertible preferred stock. The dividend is payable 1 January 2012, to shareholders of record on 15 December 2011. The payout represents an annual rate of US$2.9375 per share, the tyre maker comments.

Swoon – Pirelli unveils 2012 Calendar

Last year, Karl Lagerfeld took the Pirelli Calendar on a journey into the realm of classical history with his 36 black and white photographs inspired by Greek and Roman mythology. Largerfeld’s work brought the calendar into new territory and in doing so raised a few eyebrows. In contrast, the 2012 Pirelli Calendar represents a return to more traditional territory – shot on the island of Corsica, the eighteen black and white and seven colour images from the lens of Mario Sorrenti place a strong emphasis on natural beauty. Months after teaser photos first trickled out and were published by media outlets around the world, on the evening of 6 December the 2012 edition of the prestigious Pirelli Calendar was launched at “The Amory”, the 19th century New York military landmark.

Kumho sheds executives as Park Sam-koo moves to regain control

The Korea Times reported on 6 December that Kumho Asiana chairman Park Sam-koo is planning to relieve a number of company executives from the burden of going to work. The Seoul-based publication quoted an unnamed Kumho source as saying the company is undertaking executive job cuts as part of a restructuring drive that will primarily focus on Kumho Tire and Kumho Industrial.

CZ Tire Holdings to acquire 26% Hangzhou Zhongce share

On 21 November, Hong Kong-based Bermuda corporation China Enterprises Limited announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its share in tyre maker Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company to a company called CZ Tire Holdings Limited. According to China Enterprises, CZ Tire Holdings will pay RMB 600,000,000 (£59.6 million) for the 26 per cent share in Hangzhou Zhongce.

Manager for outright sale of India’s TCIL sought

India’s government is seeking proposals for divesting the Tyre Corporation of India Limited (TCIL) through an outright sale. In a document released through the Department of Disinvestment, a part of the country’s Ministry of Finance, the Indian government stated it has “decided to disinvest 100 per cent equity shareholding held by it in TCIL through outright sale” and reported that it “proposes to engage the services of an advisor to advise and manage the outright sale process successfully.” To achieve this divestment of its Rs 296.3 million (£3.3 million) equity in TCIL, the Indian government has called for tender submissions from merchant and investment bankers, consulting firms and financial institutions with experience in this type of transaction. The deadline for submissions is 12 December 2011.

Jail for prolific tyre dumper

Do not pass Go…it’s straight to jail for the man the Environment Agency has dubbed the “million tyre man.” The agency reports that Carl David Steele, operator of Lincolnshire-based FCM Logistics (Tyres) Ltd, received a 15 month sentence on November 7 after pleading guilty to six offences and two further offences on behalf of his company, which is now in liquidation. All charges relate to the illegal storage of hundreds of thousands of tyres at environmentally sensitive locations in Essex, Norfolk, Yorkshire, Worcestershire and Lincolnshire.

Automechanika Shanghai aiming for record attendance

Automechanika Shanghai, which will be held from 7 – 10 December at the Shanghai New International Expo Center claims to be Asia's largest trade fair for automotive parts, accessories, equipment and services. The show is expected to house a record-breaking 3,600 exhibitors, a 15 per cent increase compared to the previous show.

Cooper issues 159th consecutive quarterly dividend

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has announced it will once again issue a quarterly dividend. This time the US-based tyre manufacturer is offering 10.5 cents per share on common stock, payable 30 December 2011, to stockholders of record at the close of business 2 December 2011. This will mark the 159th consecutive quarterly dividend paid by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.

Proposed US state bill lays cleanup cost at retread sellers’ feet

Retreaders and retread sellers in the US state of Michigan may be forced to perform the tyre industry equivalent of cleaning up dog doo from the front lawn – even though someone else’s puppy left the mess. A new Bill introduced into the Michigan House of Representatives recommends imposing a US$5.00 fee upon every retreaded tyre sold by a retailer within the state, with the funds generated by this fee used for the “cleanup of roadside waste from deteriorated retread tyres” and other recycling and littler cleanup.

Toyo lifting prices in Canada

Toyo Tire Canada has announced price increases of up to five per cent for its all-season and summer passenger and light truck tyre. These new prices take effect December 1, 2011 and are being implemented due to “escalating raw material costs.” Toyo notes that “certain select sizes” may not be subjected to the abovementioned increases
