ATS Euromaster convinces haulier of tyre policy value

ATS Euromaster will fit and service the tyres of Stoke-on-Trent-based B&W Transport’s fleet of 44 tonners after the tyre specialist showed the potential five-figure savings on its annual vehicle operating costs through a properly managed tyre policy. B&W previously used an independent tyre dealer, but switched to ATS-E after viewing the data produced by the company’s new Service Value Calculator (SVC). It suggested that fitting regroovable and retreadable premium brand (Michelin and Pirelli) tyres with a commitment to accurate tyre pressure monitoring, could save B&W Transport up to £16,000 annually in fuel and tyre bills.

Pirelli boss receives suspended sentence in spying case

A Milan court has handed Pirelli chairman and CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera a 20 month suspended sentence for receiving stolen information about Italian public figures during the time he was chairman of Telecom Italia. Judge Anna Calabi also ordered him to pay Telecom Italia 900,000 euros compensation.

Time and wear make tyres louder, and quieter – study

The results of a study carried out by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University indicate that two changes through the life of a tyre – tread rubber hardness and tread wear – have a counterbalancing effect on each other. Wing-tat Hung, Yat-ken Lam and Chung-fai Ng, from the university’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Randolph Chi-kin Leung from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, presented the findings of their study ‘the impacts of tyre hardness and tread depth on tyre/road noise’ at this week’s ICSV 20 congress in Thailand.

ATS-E develops Service Value Calculator

ATS Euromaster has developed a new Service Value Calculator (SVC) in order to demonstrate the financial benefits of managing tyres to truck, bus and coach operators. Programmable with customers’ operation-specific information the SVC measures the financial benefits available through regrooving, retreading, pressure optimisation and general tyre husbandry, such as turning tyres on the rim and twinning. ATS-E produces a 10-page tyre savings report based on the inputted operational data partially yielded from a preliminary fleet inspection, summarising the annual projected savings from introducing ATS-E’s tyre management service.

Extra tyre info for DTM fans

Spectators watching this Sunday’s DTM round at the Norisring circuit in southern Germany will no longer have to puzzle over which tyres each driver has selected. Championship tyre supplier Hankook has decided to visually differentiate the option tyres by printing its brand name in larger, yellow text on the sidewall. Viewers at home will also be helped in the tyre department through additional on-screen information; graphics shown on televised coverage will now also indicate which tyres a vehicle is using. This information is transmitted via the rim-mounted sensors each DTM car has used since the start of 2012 to convey information on tyre pressure.

SE Tyres seeking greater control with Cam’s integrated ledgers

SE Tyres has incorporated the new integrated ledgers from Cam Systems into its Cameo data stream. The software provider says the new system will allow the fast fitter’s network to interrogate its financials more robustly. SE’s auditor says the system will allow the business to exert greater control over the business.

New Pirelli SC1 BSB rear tyre ‘especially important’ for Snetterton

Pirelli has identified last month’s successful introduction of its new Diablo Superbike SC1 rear tyre at Knockhill as an important factor for the MCE British Superbike Championship’s return to Snetterton. The high speed circuit, combined with the possibility of high track temperatures will make the softer compound tyre a popular choice, according to the series tyre supplier. A test held at the circuit last week provided Pirelli with good feedback as most teams sampled race simulations for tyre wear.

Continental continues to pursue car connectivity

Continental is continuing its ongoing plans to more fully “connect” cars. As far as the automotive supplier is concerned, it is not just about smartphones or computers, but rather, but rather connectivity is becoming an increasingly influential part of any sales proposition. For Conti, the connected vehicle will be a key subject of future developments. “Today, more and more new vehicle functions are already based on connectivity. To create innovative functions, we are linking vehicle components and systems ever more closely with one another and, at the same time, increasingly connecting the vehicle to the outside world,” explains Ralf Lenninger, head of the Strategy and Development department of Continental’s Interior division.

PRA offers assistance to European Commission fuel inquiry

The Petrol Retailers' Association (PRA) has offered to submit evidence to the European Commission on alleged anti-competitive pricing tactics in the UK fuel market. Bridgestone UK’s app goes global

Bridgestone UK’s tyre monitoring app is now being rolled out across other European markets. According to the company, the sales force assisting ‘Challenge’ app works by calculating the true cost of tyres over time and shares the performance data with all other users, before providing performance comparisons against competitors’ tyres – all on the user’s tablet.

Deployed in 2012, the technology has revolutionised Bridgestone’s sales process and is now regarded as a strategic tool, after being created by RNF Digital. Bridgestone’s product and marketing manager Andy Mathias said: “We are proud of our innovative use of technology to help serve our customers and sales force. The application that we developed in the UK is now being used across Europe and is even being trialed in North and South America.”
