TecAlliance initiates weekly update cycles

TecAlliance has announced a pilot project to enable its official data suppliers to update their product information on a weekly rather than monthly basis. The company is known for the TecDoc electronic replacement parts catalogue. “The relentless globalisation of the industry is putting extra demands on parts brands, particularly for those growing into new sectors or rapidly increasing their product portfolio,” explained Shaun Greasley, TecAlliance’s regional sales director CEE/GB/IE.

Data increasingly important to future prospects in tyre and mobility sectors

It is not unusual for the start of the year to be replete with corporate acquisitions. Some even happen while much of the western world is enjoying Christmas and new year holidays. While European FinTyre Distribution (EfTD) did indeed enact the latest move in its ongoing strategic purchasing programme during the 2018 holiday break, it seems that this year February was the month of choice for getting the chequebooks out, with Bridgestone, Michelin and – in the UK at least – Goodyear all announcing strategic spending. For different but connected reasons all three challenge us to consider the impact of changing mobility trends.

Practical emergence of RFID unlocks data opportunities

The industrialisation of big data has been progressing quickly in recent years within the automotive segment. TPMS sensor technology and the networks they feed data into have enabled increasingly sophisticated software systems to be created to use the massive amount of data we are now able to collect more effectively. Such systems are also able to increase the business applications of another technology, radio-frequency identification, or RFID, helping commercial tyre distribution chains to increase cost, time, and safety efficiency as well as accuracy in their collection of data. Steve Daly, commercial director of CAM, the provider of e-jobsheet, TiDaeX, and the Online Tyre Catalogue, told Tyres & Accessories about the opportunities RFID is now unlocking, and how future, more affordable reading technology could increase the reach of these gains.

Goodyear share price picks up, hedge funds back Goodyear

Goodyear’s share price picked up by up to 1 per cent during early trading on 12 December 2018, having risen 0.56 per cent by the close of the previous session (up from $21.59 to $21.71). Considering that the value of these shares fell -8.70 per cent during the preceding seven-day period, and experienced a loss of -1.76 per cent over the past 30-day period suggests this is a significant uptick. In addition, when you compare this with the 1.5 per cent one-day drop all tyre majors experienced in October when Michelin warned that demand was softening, it appears that the share price is bouncing back.

Automotive brands failing to engage female audiences

Data from Quantcast suggests the automotive sector is still creating advertising campaigns focussed heavily on concepts that appeal to men, despite rising purchasing power among women.

UK government data shows that car ownership among women increased 75 per cent in the 20 years up to 2014. However Quantcast found that the most engaging themes for female audiences, including ‘togetherness’ and ‘adventure’, appeared in less than one percent of adverts.

European Parliament acknowledges that access to in-car data is ‘essential’

The European Parliament overwhelmingly supported the adoption of the Own Initiative Report by Istvan Ujhelyi on Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems.

Tyre association ETRMA has added its voice to that of the 633 MEPs that supported the request for the European Commission to publish a legislative initiative to guarantee fair, unrestricted and in real time access to in-vehicle data, before the end of the year.

CAM’s online tool helps customers become GDPR ready

In fewer than four months, the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will become active, presenting businesses with a number of requirements related to the way they process data. Tyre and wheel fitment data companies Fitment Group and Size It Up have announced they will merge and operate under the Fitment Group brand. The value of the merger was not disclosed. The expanded business is based in Duluth, Minnesota.

HaynesPro buys E3 Technical boosting UK tech data business

E3 Technical, software and staff supplier to online automotive reference company Carweb, has been acquired by HaynesPro, the professional data solutions business of Haynes Publishing Group plc. (Haynes). The move will strengthen Haynes’ online technical data presence in the UK, according to the company. HaynesPro is the European market leader for online automotive workshop data for the automotive aftermarket. Serving more than 50,000 workshops through its European partners, it has been collaborating with Carweb since 2009. Darryl Watts, formerly E3 technical sales director, has become the new managing director of HaynesPro UK.

Attitudes towards car ownership changing, says Goodyear

The number of teenagers who are not learning to drive has fallen by nearly 30 per cent in a decade – a record number, revealed by DVSA data.

The cost of university, rising price of car insurance and changes in mobility, particularly car sharing, are all deciding factors in this decline.
