Audit Confirms CV Visitors

The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) has confirmed that 26,843 visitors attended the 2005 combined Commercial Vehicle Show and Automotive Trade Show in April.

Demographic data, provided by visitor registration company CTS, shows that those 26,843 visitors had more purchasing power this year than at any previous CV Show and ATS says the SMMT. A detailed breakdown of visitors showed that 72.3 per cent were at owner, director or senior manager level.

The SMMT believes that these figures confirm the informal feedback from exhibitors during and after the event, suggesting that visitors and business leads were of a very high quality. Visitors came from across the UK and Ireland, with a further 1,000 from overseas, finding the NEC an ideal place for a business-to-business event of this type.

The 2006 CV Show and ATS will be on 25, 26 and 27 April, in halls 1 to 5 of the NEC.

Car Production Up in April

Provisional output data released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics shows that UK car production rose 10.6 per cent, or 13,689 units, in April.

This puts the year-to-date total above the 2004 level for first time this year.

Both output for home and export volumes rose by over 10 per cent last month.

“Despite problems at Longbridge, today’s figures show that the UK still has a strong vehicle manufacturing base”, said SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan.

Goodyear Tyres Take Flight

Goodyear has selected its second aviation tyre evaluation centre, the 43 Air School in Port Alfred, South Africa. It will be Goodyear’s first centre in the Southern Hemisphere.

The academy has 40 registered aircraft and an impeccable safety record assures the manufacturer. The new school will do as its forerunner, the Florida centre does, and will evaluate Goodyear and competitor tyres based on their durability and safe landings. The school’s test results will be recorded and used to measure Goodyear’s overall tyre performance.

Goodyear Shares Overweight

J.P. Morgan Securities has cut its rating on Goodyear Tire & Rubber to neutral from overweight, citing valuation.

The shares rose 23 per cent in the last month against a three per cent rise in the benchmark S&P 500, the broker noted.

“The now-richer valuation, coupled with less favorable just-released April tyre pricing data, suggests stock could enter range-bound period,” said the company.

TIA and SEMA Join Forces on NY Tyre Plan

(Akron/Tire Review) TIA and SEMA issued a joint letter to the New York State Legislature yesterday strongly objecting to proposed legislation that would force tyre manufacturers to include a “non-coded” date of manufacture on the sidewall of tyres. In the joint letter, TIA and SEMA said they “believe that this legislation would place tyre dealers, wholesalers and manufacturers at an unfair disadvantage by requiring this additional sidewall information, at no value to the motoring public.”

Pirelli To Build Specialist Cable Plant in Brazil

Pirelli has started work towards the construction of a special cable factory in the Brazilian State of Espirito Santo (Vila Velha). The “umbilicals” produced will be used in offshore oil platforms, the company says.

Race Team Goes For Pole Position With Beissbarth

Beissbarth’s wheel aligner technology continues to be the top choice for motor sport, says Beissbarth UK, announcing that the ML8R Easy Wheel Aligner has been selected by the RML team for one of their busiest seasons.

The Chevrolet Lacetti WTC will tackle rounds three and four of the 2005 World Touring Car Championship in Magny-Cours, France. In Magny-Cours, the team will be closely watched by Nick Reilly, CEO of GM Daewoo Auto & Technology in South Korea. “We’ll do our best to put up a good show for the boss,” said Mark Busfield, project manager, Chevrolet WTCC, “we are now looking at qualifying in the top 15.”

ATS Launches On-Line Authorisation Service

ATS Euromaster has lunched an on-line authorisation service for commercial vehicle fleet operators.

In the past, authorisation for work required, has been carried out over the phone, sometimes causing delays or carrying the risk of possible disputes later on. The new system, which is being piloted at the moment and will be available to all ATS Euromaster account holders, will eliminate these potential problems.

Fasep Introduce Tilting Balancer

Tyre equipment manufacturer, Fasep, has introduced a new automatic tilting balancer. The Videotronic V652 allows wheels to be mounted horizontally to aid centring. It also has a pneumatic tilt system with electronic control, full automatic wheel data input and a laser system for application of adhesive weights. A 15 inch LCD monitor has also been included in the design, to ease operation of the machine.

Indian Rubber Industry Consumes 1 Million Tonnes

(Rubber Asia/India) The Indian rubber industry used up a total of over a million tonnes of various types of rubber during 2003/04, according to data compiled by the Automotive tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA).

Of this, the tyre industry alone (including cycle tyres & tubes and camelback) consumed 478,734 tonnes of natural rubber — 66.5 per cent of all natural rubber (NR) consumed by the Indian industry as a whole. The tyre segment was also by far the largest consumer of synthetic rubber (140,960 tonnes out of a total of 210,190 tonnes) and reclaimed rubber (38,532 tonnes out of 70,460).

More importantly, the Indian auto tyre segment still has 73.34 per cent of its rubber consumption in the form of natural rubber with synthetic rubber (SR) accounting for 23.73 per cent and reclaimed rubber 2.93 per cent. This NR:SR ratio is almost the reverse of the pattern elsewhere in the tyre-making world.

Poor’ US Roads Cost Drivers $52 billion Annually

The poor quality of American roads cost vehicle owners an extra $52 billion in annual repair, according to Market Analysis, a quarterly market research newsletter published by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). According to the Tire Review report, poor road conditions may also play a role in nearly 30 per cent of traffic fatalities, MEMA has found.

UK Vehicle Production Slips

UK car production fell 3.7 per cent or 5,286 units in January 2005, reports the SMMT. At the same time output for the home market climbed 4.3 per cent. However, production for export markets fell by 7.5 per cent, compared to a growth of 12.4 per cent a year ago.

Doom and Gloom in UK Manufacturing?

A survey conducted by the CBI has reported that UK manufacturing firms fear that up to 26,000 jobs could be lost over the next three months. The CBI and Experian poll showed that confidence in the manufacturing industry has fallen in eight of the UK’s 11 regions over the past quarter with the north west hit hard. Despite the sharpest fall in confidence occurring with firms in the West Midlands, London and the South East are expected to bear the largest decline in manufacturing employment. The CBI states that whilst 26,000 jobs is a large figure, it is still short of the losses seen during the steep manufacturing recession of 2001 to 2003. However, the latest data from the Office for National Statistics shows a 0.6 per cent between November and December, its fastest pace in seven months.

Chinese Automotive Exports up 73 per cent

In 2004 the value of China’s automotive exports, principally of components, reached $8.156 billion (£4.4 billion). The total equates to an increase of 73 per cent over 2003. China’s automotive components imports rose 13 per cent in a year that saw vehicle production decline in the last months, according to the latest data from the Mechanical and Electrical Department of China’s Ministry of Commerce. China’s trade deficit in automotive products was reduced from the $9.737 billion of 2003 to $8.177 billion last year. Customs statistics showed that in 2004 automotive imports reached $16.333 billion, the Xinhua China Daily reported.
