According to FCC records, Bridgestone is close to releasing a wireless tyre pressure monitoring system. The system uses sensors embedded just under the tyre rim to sense tyre pressure and temperature to a handheld device. A 1.5 second alarm is sounded if the pressure is too high or too low.
Car output in Russia rose 9.5 per cent year on year to 646,000 units in January-June, the industry and energy ministry reported. The ministry attributed the growth to an increase in car output by Avtoframos, a joint venture between the Moscow city government and Renault; Ford; the GM-AvtoVAZ JV; IzhAvto, TagAZ, and Severstal-Auto; and Russian car assembly plant Avtotor, a Prime-Tass report said. Truck output in Russia rose 18.4 per cent in the first half of the year, said the ministry, but did not provide any detailed data. The ministry attributed the growth to an increase in light commercial vehicle output by Russian automakers GAZ, UAZ and TagAZ.

Police in the Gosport area are looking for a vigilante who has slashed the tyres of at least 20 people accused of driving while talking on cell phones. According to reports, the overnight attacks have been taking place for several weeks, and each one is accompanied by a warning made from words cut out of newspapers. “Warning. A Russian scientist who worked in cooperation with Hankook subsidiary ASA has been given a six-year suspended sentence for his part in an international espionage case. The EU Landfill Directive banning the landfilling of shredded used tyres came into effect on 16th July 2006, when all used tyres (with minor exceptions) will have to be diverted from landfill and recovered, re-used or recycled. This follows the earlier ban on the landfilling of whole tyres in 2003.

Slovakian tyre manufacturer Matador has decided to extend the warranty on its casings to a second tyre life when its products are retreaded by a Bandag Dealer in Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. Matador now recommends Bandag for the second life of its casings.
The collaboration with Bandag dealers streamlines the truck-tyre division of the Púchov-based manufacturer. Matador and Bandag have been operating in the same Eastern European countries for many years, going to market with complementary products and skills. The extended casing warranty for Bandag retreading is a logical next step towards providing end-users with cost-effective tyre solutions.

In the two sessions already held, Ringtread retreader production and sales staff traveled to MTNA’s Nashville headquarters for seminars and hands-on training.
Pirelli’s plans to construct a 393-foot tall wind turbine at its factory in Carlisle, have moved a step further. “If the wind speeds match data collected over the years at Carlisle Airport, then we can put forward a final working proposal to Milan,” a Pirelli spokesman said. The first phase is to erect a 45-metre tall mast to measure wind speeds and directions on 8 June. The factory has set a target of having the turbine fully operational in the second half of 2007.
(Akron/Tire Review) A study undertaken in the USA by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) claims there is no correlation between the end of a tyre’s “safety performance” and its chronological age. RMA released its study data earlier this week after examining some 14,000 scrapped P-metric and LT-metric tyres late last year, comparing each tyre’s date of manufacture to the date it was examined.

(Akron/Tire Review) Dr. Patrick King, global electronics strategist at Michelin Americas Research and Development Corp. (MARC), has been awarded the 2006 Don Percival Award by AIM Global, an association for automatic identification and mobility and SCAN: the Data Capture Report, a newsletter targeting the automatic data capture market.
The Don Percival Award “acknowledges outstanding contributions to the advancement of automatic identification and mobility solutions,” according to AIM Global, and was presented to King in recognition of his work in developing and standardizing radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for tyres.
