Aftermarket Trio Sign Up to MAM Autonet

MAM Software, a leading UK provider of aftermarket IT solutions, announced on March 28 that three aftermarket automotive suppliers – Pearl Automotive, Solid Auto (UK) Ltd and Sovereign Rotating Machines are installing MAM’s Autonet B2B Seller electronic trading solution to power their e-commerce initiatives. Their participation takes the total number of suppliers Autonet-enabled to almost 70.

Autonet B2B Seller will integrate with each supplier’s existing MAM Autopart systems and allow them to trade electronically with their individual motor factor customers. Autonet B2B Seller is fully compliant with the recently announced PACT protocols and will, says MAM, allow communication with most systems currently used by motor factors, including MAM’s own Autopart.

Conti Launches Rear-End Collision Prevention System

On the final day of March an important new product from Continental was given its series production debut – a sensor system designed to prevent rear-end collisions at city driving speeds. Premiering on Volvo’s XC60, Continental calls the new sensor system an “important milestone” for its all-round ContiGuard safety system.

The system monitors the road ahead of the vehicle, and is networked with the braking system. It automatically applies the brakes if there is a risk of a rear-end collision and the driver either fails to react or if his or her reactions are too slow. Continental has developed and supplied both the infrared sensor, which monitors the road ahead and detects objects, and the electronic braking system, both of which are core components of Volvo´s innovative “City Safety” concept.

Electrical Retailer Switches on to Michelin Contract

Michelin UK reports it has won a major contract to supply tyres to the distribution fleet used by electrical retailer Comet, which is operated by supply chain solutions specialist Wincanton. The new contract has been set-up on a ‘pence per kilometre’ (PPK) basis and replaces a previous ‘pay as you go’ agreement with another manufacturer. It will be supported by ATS Euromaster’s fleet of 1,200 mobile service vehicles which will be used to fit tyres at Wincanton and Comet’s own distribution depots, coupled with the provision of 24/7 emergency roadside assistance in the event of a tyre-related breakdown.

What Does Your Car Colour Reveal?

Does the colour of the car you drive say anything about your chosen profession? Do the police have a bias for blue or undertakers have a predisposition for black?

Car insurance expert elephant.co.uk looked at data from over one million drivers to find out if particular professions prefer certain colour cars and discovered that you just might be able to tell someone’s job by looking at their car.

Blue proved to be the most popular colour all round with a quarter of motorists choosing the calming shade for their vehicle. However, living up to their ‘boys in blue’ name, the colour proved even more popular with the police who are over 7 per cent more likely to drive a blue car than the average motorist.

Hella Joins TPMS Market

Hella Inc., best know for its automotive lighting and electronics, has entered the TPMS market. The company introduced the TC-400 TPMS system, which the company said “meets or exceeds the same specifications as all OE-installed systems.” In addition to monitoring tyre inflation pressure, the new Hella unit also monitors tire temperature. Hella said its TPMS “is extremely flexible and can be installed in any vehicle that is not originally equipped with an OE system or has been fitted with upgraded or custom wheels.”

Giti Tire to Show Web Fleet System at CV Show

Giti Tire Europe is to debut the technology behind its Giti Assist pan-European breakdown service during April’s CV Show. Sales director Richard Lyons told Tyres & Accessories that the company will be showing its web-based fleet management system and hand-held data collection technology at the show, plus giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the details of the pan-European service it is now offering in conjunction with Tymacon. In addition, the manufacturer will exhibit its Giti-branded nitrogren inflation system on the 54 square metre stand (Hall 8-141).

Bridgestone Motorsport Announces F1 Tyre Specifications

Bridgestone, the official tyre supplier to the FIA Formula One World Championship, has announced the compound allocations for the Potenza tyres to be used in the first nine rounds of the 2008 season. The tyres for 2008 feature minor changes from those of last season, changes Bridgestone says were made in the interests of safety. The allocations for the first nine races of the current season are the same as used in the respective events in 2007 aside from the Bahrain Grand Prix, which will now use the medium and soft compounds, as opposed to the hard and medium compounds in 2007.

Goodyear Signs Tyre Supply Deal with Major US Utility Provider

North America’s largest tyre manufacturer has secured a sizeable supply deal in the US state of California. Goodyear recently announced the signing of a three-year contract to supply tyres and business solution to Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and will supply replacement and retreaded tyres along with tyre services and system controls to the company and its fleet of more than 12,000 vehicles.

Steve McClellan, Goodyear vice president of Commercial Tire Systems, said, “We’re excited about this new relationship with Pacific Gas and Electric Company, one of the nation’s top utilities in a high-growth area. Increasingly, utility fleets that provide infrastructure and keep energy flowing for growing communities are an important area for Goodyear products and services.

May “Worst Month For Breakdowns” – ATS Euromaster

According to ATS Euromaster, May 2007 was the worst month of last year for commercial vehicle tyre-related breakdowns on the UK roads. The company says that its data shows that, throughout the year, ATS Euromaster’s 24 hour Rapid Response team handled 111,318 calls for roadside assistance from vans to top weight articulated trucks, with 10,242 (or 9.2 per cent) of all call-outs falling in May. The quietest month was December, with just 7,042 (or 6.3 per cent) of calls.

TireStamp Launches Wireless CV TPMS

TireStamp Corporation has released a wireless tyre pressure monitoring system aimed specifically at trailer tyres. According to TireStamp trailer tyres comprise 75 per cent of enroute tyre failures which are caused by chronic underinflation and penetrating objects. This impacts fleets not only in their tyre budgets as trailers in single trailer configurations account for 45 per cent of the tractor-trailer’s fuel consumption, and 65 per cent in a doubles configurations, according to the company.

Universal Chooses Credential

The South East’s largest independent tyre distributor, Universal Tyre and Autocentres, has handed a two-year contract to market-leading Credential Automotive for waste tyre collection from its 15 depots. Established in 1923, Dartford-based Universal supplies, fits and services cars, trucks, agricultural, earthmoving vehicles and motor cycle tyres for private and fleet owners. The profile fits neatly with Credential’s model, according to the company.

Micheldever Develops Two-Wheel Efforts

The Micheldever name is well known across the tyre trade. As one of the leading UK wholesalers, Micheldever reports a turnover of £230 million, generated by selling a total of 7 million tyres each year. However, the fact that 70,000 of these are two-wheel products is something could easily be overlooked amongst all the masses of passenger (PCR) and 4×4 tyres that pass through the company each year. To those in the PCR tyre trade, this kind of volume may sound relatively small for a leading wholesaler, however in terms of the national two-wheel tyre market, this 70,000 tyres equates to just under 10 per cent share of the market. What’s more, the business has been operating at this level for the last three to four years, and as a motorbike tyre wholesaler for a decade.

MAM Launches Autocat+ Version 5

Aftermarket software developer provider MAM Software is about to launch the latest version of its electronic catalogue solution Autocat+ Version 5, which provides motor factors and retailers with new tools for improving the identification and selection of automotive components from a range of over 170 aftermarket suppliers.

In this latest version, product identification will be improved with the introduction of a number of enhancements including improved data matching, VIN decoding and full-text note searches.

CIMS Discusses NHTSA E-Registration Plan

Calling it a “win-win situation for tyre manufacturers, tyre dealers and more importantly for the tyre purchaser,” CIMS President Paul Kruder offered his endorsement of NHTSA’s plan to formally allow electronic tyre registration. NHTSA revealed last week that it would undertake changing tyre registration regulations to permit direct registration via the Internet or other electronic means. While not preventing such in recent years, NHTSA had not formally included non-paper registration means.

In a letter to the media, Kruder said, “These proposed changes will give tyre dealers the option of providing a paper tyre registration form to every customer or completing the tyre registration process electronically on behalf of the tyre purchaser. By improving tyre registration levels everybody wins, especially the tyre purchaser because of the safety protection registering tyres offers them and their families.
