BAT RF Launches Automated CV Tyre Management System in the UK

A computerised tyre management system developed in the US by BAT RF is now being launched in the UK market. The system brings together a series of active RF (radio frequency) components to provide truck and bus fleets with real-time data for tyre inflation, fuel consumption and asset identification. All data can be viewed in real time through the BAT RF website or integrated into existing fleet management software.

A survey carried out in mid-July by BAT RF UK with a large UK fleet operator found that 44 per cent of all tyres were under inflated by more than five per cent, which has a significant detrimental effect on tyre life and fuel consumption. The survey also found that 64 per cent of dual tyres on tractor units were more than five per cent out of balance. This results in one tyre running hotter than the other on the same axle and eventually failing. Initial indications are that many UK truck and bus fleets are facing similar challenges in monitoring and managing tyre pressures cost effectively.

In response to market changes, a tighter regulatory environment and pressure on costs, exhaust and after-treatment system suppliers face both opportunities and challenges in the next five years. This growth will occur in part due to the overall increase in the world market for passenger cars, which is expected to grow in volume by 34 per cent from 66 million units in 2006 to around 85 million by 2014. This will create increased demand for more exhaust and after-treatment systems. But on top of this organic increase in sales, other factors will create additional growth, taking exhaust and after-treatment system supplier revenues to an even higher level.

Polk Forecasts New Commercial Vehicle Registrations in 2012

The new vehicle market for classes 3-8 vehicles is expected to grow to 723,000 by 2012, according to a new report from R. L. Polk & Co. Polk’s new Forecast of Commercial Vehicle Activity for North America which provides insight into the class 3-8 commercial vehicle market through 2012. “Available to customers now, Polk’s unique offering provides an econometric-based model, allowing customers to maximize their sales opportunities by better understanding the North American market for commercial vehicles,” the company said.

“Polk’s new offering for the North American commercial vehicle market enables us to expand our capabilities and provide increased value and benefit to our customers,” said Gary Meteer, account director for Polk’s Commercial Vehicle Group. “We are confident this new data offering will provide significant insight for customers as they analyze business opportunities in North America’s commercial vehicle industry and plan for the future.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Yokohama Ready for Step into WTCC Unknown

Yokohama’s ADVAN brand will receive its sternest challenge yet as the World Touring Car Championship’s control tyre this weekend, as the company prepares to take its tyres to the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Imola – the first of two previously unseen tracks this season.

Whilst most circuits included in the Japanese tyre manufacturer’s racing programme provide a degree of familiarity, the addition of Imola and Okayama to this year’s WTCC calendar provides Yokohama’s engineers with new considerations when preparing for the meeting, as Yokohama Technical Consultant Ian Beveridge explains: “For Imola, our pre-season work included visiting the track and collating as much data as possible, from its actual dimensions to the level of grip given out by the asphalt. We then researched what the conditions are likely to be and found comparative tracks to give us some reference points.”

August UK Van Registrations Down 20%

The latest Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) data shows that UK new van registrations fell 20.7 per cent in August to 387,645 for the year so far. Truck registrations were down 3.2 per cent in August and up 20.5 per cent to 58,553 for the rolling year. Van registrations were down 24.7 per cent for the month and down 0.8 per cent to 329,092 for the rolling year. “In the short term van registrations will continue to struggle, though the truck sector is holding total CV figures close to the three-year average. In the longer term we expect an overall and marked downward trend,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.

Successful Motor Show For Toyo

At this year’s British International Motor Show, Toyo Tyre UK Ltd. represented Toyo Tires; the first time that the company had exhibited at the event. The show, held at London’s Excel centre attracted 472,300 visitors -an increase from the 415,000 who visited the show 2 years ago – showing that it is not only the biggest consumer show in the UK, but is also a major event in the International Motoring calendar.

Toyo Tires had a major presence at the show with a two-tier stand that covered 120 square metres. The company was the only tyre manufacturer at the show and had a prime location in one of the main halls.

The Eagle Has Landed…in the UK

Wheel alignment has traditionally been one of the most challenging daily jobs in the workshop, mainly due to the costs of employing specialised personnel available and the risk of losing valuable time after discovering that a vehicle’s alignment does not need to be adjusted. Beru f1systems Produces New Touring Car TPMS

Beru f1systems has developed what it calls a cost-effective tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for touring cars. Specifically for closed-wheel, road car-derived saloons and sports cars, the system provides accurate tyre pressure and temperature information for drivers and engineers to optimise tyre pressures and wear, as well as offering puncture detection. A new feature is the ability to switch wheel positions on the car without having to manually re-assign wheels sensors to different corners of the car. The system available from August 2008, is permitted for race and test in WTCC and dependent on regulations, other national series such as the BTCC (only testing, not race).

“Engineers can now switch wheels without manually allocating wheel sensors,” continues Shingleton. “Switching tyres to balance out wear is common in touring car applications, our solution gives them more time to work on set-up rather than inputting data.”

John Bean Unveils ‘Prism’ Mobile Alignment System

John Bean, a brand within Snap-on Equipment, has introduced the Visualiner Prism, a mobile wheel alignment system ideal for workshops with lift bays unsuitable for a full 3D alignment machine. Prism is a hybrid of Charge Coupled Device (CCD) and 3D alignment technology and enables a run-out compensation procedure to be undertaken to ensure precise wheel alignment.

Accurate wireless data communication is ensured through the use of Bluetooth technology, which provides uniform alignment readings on vehicles ranging from small cars through to vans. The system also features long-life rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, with sufficient power reserves to last three days, based on three to four alignment checks per day. Furthermore, the batteries are software-controlled, providing an early low power warning to prevent interruption of an alignment procedure.

Court Rule Against Tiremakers in Data Reporting Suit

The U.S. Court of Appeals rejected an RMA argument concerning public access to early warning data tiremakers are required to supply the government under terms of the TREAD Act.

The court, in a case involving Public Citizen, said the “plain language” of the TREAD Act precluded attempts to keep private certain early warning data. Tiremakers are required to provide NHTSA with a wide range of information they collect on accidents resulting in deaths, injuries or property damage. However, they claimed, through the RMA, that such information should not be released publicly as it is often incomplete and could be misinterpreted. (Tire Review/Akron)
