Toyo Tires has announced that a further 12 fitments of its popular and effective Open Country M/T tyre have gained Professional Off Road (POR) accreditation, allowing them to be listed and sold outside of current EU labelling requirements. The tyre is already hugely popular with many off-road professionals, including multiple Dakar and Baja winner, Robby Gordon. The tyre is also being used this year by the Isuzu UK Works Rally Team, on appropriate events.
Cooper Tire will serve as tyre supplier to the Titan Desert mountain bike marathon. The Titan Desert by Garmin 2014 Marathon, to use its full, sponsor-friendly title, begins on 27 April and will see more than 400 participants traversing a 700 kilometre, six-stage course. Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx tyres will be fitted on 20 support vehicles. This vehicle fleet will cover around 1,000 kilometres of demanding terrain during the mountain bike marathon, from stone tracks and dry river beds to soft sand dunes, in temperatures expected to reach as high as 40°C.

Cooper Tire Europe’s 4×4 ambassador Xavi Foj took third place in the Dakar Rally, following an epic fightback. Foj has used Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx tyres in the past three Dakar events, claiming T2 Class victories in 2012 and 2013. After a difficult opening to his 2014 Dakar campaign, including brake issues and an electronic problem, hopes of a hat-trick faded.

Cooper Tire Europe has announced a new feature to its presence at the 2013 Rally Day event. The company’s 4×4 zone will offer visitors the chance to ride in one of DriveTech’s 4×4 machines, which swaps speed for sheer inclines and drops, mud, water and more as the Cooper rubber is put through its paces in a demanding off-road course.
Maxxis has announced the planned extension of its 4×4 tyre range in the UK, confirming the full availability of every tyre in it. The company says this move is a result of increasing customer demand from distributor Stapleton’s. The manufacturer is also readying itself to contest the King of the Valleys endurance event in August – its tyres were used by the winner of the inaugural contest in 2012, and Maxxis is confident the fierce competition will be the perfect showcase for its range. Maxxis Marauder, Bravo, Bighorn, Trepador, Mudzilla and Creepy Crawler tyres will now be available to UK dealers through the Stapleton’s distribution network.
Developed for the European Rallycross Championship with competitive testing in Germany, Sweden and Norway, Cooper Tire has launched its new 17” wet-weather rallycross tyre. The new tyre has already run in open competition in both Portugal and France, setting fastest laps in the heats. Cooper says its eponymous and Avon brands are established as global rallycross leaders, with these brands supplying the tyres of choice for the vast majority of competitors.
Pirelli has introduced the latest addition to its P Zero family: the new Pirelli P Zero Nero GT. Available in a wide range of fitments, the new ultra high performance tyre was introduced for 2013. The tyre’s headline improvement is increased durability, which Pirelli says it has achieved without affecting driving pleasure, safety and performance. Also underlining the importance of the high performance segment to Pirelli is May 2013’s 50th anniversary celebration of its partnership with Lamborghini.
It’s now half a century since Pirelli first teamed up with Lamborghini, and celebrations to mark the golden anniversary began with a press conference at the Pirelli Foundation on 7 May, at which Pirelli chief technical officer Maurizio Boiocchi stated “we look forward to another 50 years together with Lamborghini.” The festivities will progress to Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata, taking in Forte dei Marmi, Rome and Bologna along the way.
Cooper Tire’s 4×4 range has been extended with the introduction of the Zeon LTZ and two new Discoverer models, the S/T MAXX and A/T3. All three tyres are off-road ready, with the Zeon LTZ performing as a hybrid between sport truck and all-terrain applications, with improved road handling and ride characteristics. One of the brand's distributors in this segment, Kings Road Tyres has worked with Cooper for more than 10 years, and purchasing and marketing manager, Tim Bader predicts that the new options could make a big impact, creating “a real buzz among stockists and end users”.
Michelin has begun its three-year commitment to the Dakar Rally as it means to go on, with its tyres fitted to victors in the Bike, Truck and – on the tyre manufacturer’s comeback to the category for the first time since its 2001 victory – Cars. The French tyre giant brought its Latitude C tyres for the Car class, the Bib Mousse-equipped Desert Race for Motorbikes, and the XZL for Trucks, showing the strength and versatility required for competitors to tackle the frequently punishing conditions encountered.
Toyo Tires racers won six stages and 13 podiums during the 2013 Dakar. Team Toyo’s Robby Gordon finished the Rally strongly, winning Stages 11 and 13 while two past Dakar champions, Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah, used the Toyo Open Country M/T-R to win Stage One and Stages Three, Four and Six respectively. Sainz drove the American-built #303 Team Qatar Red Bull buggy, Al-Attiyah the #300 Team Qatar Red Bull buggy, while Gordon competed in the Toyo-supported #315 Speed Energy/Toyo Tires/Mapei Hummer.
