A new survey from Bridgestone and road safety charity, Brake shows that over a third of primary school parents (35 per cent) have witnessed near misses outside the school gates. More than half (55 per cent) of survey respondents said they worried about their child’s safety near roads on the school run.
During Brityrex International 2014, (EventCity Manchester 7 – 9 October), the NTDA will be auctioning a signed Ryan Giggs no.11 Manchester United shirt, which commemorates his 588 appearances, 108 goals and 24 years of service with Manchester United. It also lists all of his accolades as a player during that period including his PFA Player of the Year in 2009. The shirt will be on display on the NTDA stand during Brityrex and delegates will be able to make silent bids for the shirt between 7 – 8 of October.
The Bridgestone Group is donating US$1 million to critical efforts underway in Liberia and the region to combat the Ebola outbreak. Specifically, $500,000 will be paid to Samaritan’s Purse by Bridgestone Americas, Inc. for work in Liberia, while Bridgestone Corporation will donate $500,000 (JPY 54 million) to support UNICEF’s efforts in Liberia and Nigeria. This $1,000,000 donation, announced on 29 September, follows months of work by Firestone Liberia to manage an effective Ebola emergency response programme on its subsidiary rubber farm and nearby communities in country. The funds are aimed at strengthening efforts to stop the spread of Ebola through public awareness; helping facilitate delivery of in-home care supplies for the sick; enhancing medical treatment; and providing support for children left orphaned due to the epidemic.
Commenting on the Road Casualties Report, Institute of Advanced Motorists director of policy of research Neil Greig said: “We welcome the overall decrease in road deaths although the long term trends show improvements are slowing down.”

Pirelli UK will provide its rally simulator to the Richard Burns Foundation at the Rallyday event in Castle Combe on 20 September. All proceeds from the simulator experience will go to the Richard Burns Foundation: a charity set up in the name of the 2001 World Rally Champion, who won his title on Pirelli tyres.
Cheshire’s police force has joined the county’s Fire and Rescue Service as a member of TyreSafe, months after the latter emergency service was made TyreSafe’s 2013 emergency services award winner. “We are delighted to welcome Cheshire Police on board and look forward to developing some highly effective initiatives with them,” comments Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.
Michelin’s Guy Heywood is back in the UK after scaling Mount Kilimanjaro – a feat that raised more than £2,500 for charity – but he isn’t putting his feet up and taking it easy now. The truck and bus tyre division commercial director plans to return there next year with three colleagues from Michelin and burn calories again for a good cause.
Raising more than £1,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, GT Radial’s Le Mans 24 Hour Cycle Race team pedalled 169 laps of the 4,185m Circuit Bugatti. The team, comprising Brian McDermott, managing director UK for Giti Tire; Ellis Hadley, senior test engineer; Martin Gibson, senior test engineer; and Bertrand Saint-Supery, OEM EU technical director, covered a total of 707,265m to finish 340th out of 458.

Since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went viral a couple of months back, millions have doused themselves with icy water and uploaded a video of the proceedings, and many of the protagonists have performed the feat as a fundraiser for non-profit organisation the ALS Association or other motor neurone disease associations. Apollo Vredestein says that ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a harsh reality for several of its employees, and therefore last Friday the tyre maker took up the Ice Bucket Challenge gauntlet cast in its direction by Revalidatiecentrum Roessingh, a rehabilitation centre based near the company’s headquarters in Enschede, the Netherlands.
The ‘TerraClean on Tour’ team are celebrating after winning the 1200-mile ‘Two Ball Rally’ and raising an impressive £5000 for Macmillan Cancer Support at the same time. The technicians can normally be found using TerraClean’s unique decarbonisation technology to successfully improve the emissions, fuel economy and performance of a range of vehicles. But between 14-18 August they took turns behind the wheel of an ex-London taxi – bought for only £500 and given the TerraClean treatment before it departed – in a bid to win the Two Ball Rally.

Road Safety GB has become an official supporter of Tyre Safety Month organised by TyreSafe. As a national road safety organisation that includes representatives from many groups across the UK, such as local government road safety teams, Road Safety GB’s involvement is seen as boost that will raise awareness about October’s campaign further than ever before, helping to make the UK’s roads safer.
