American comedian Dan Nainan will perform at the 2012 NTDA-Westlake Golf Day gala dinner, to be held at the world famous The Belfry on 2 August 2012. According to the event’s sponsors, the event has proved so popular that it has nearly sold out already. The event will take place at the prestigious Belfry Golf Club, which has been host of the Ryder Cup four times.
Michelin has announced details of a road safety competition for young drivers run through Facebook. The company explains that social media is a logical means for disseminating information to the young; nearly 80 per cent of young Europeans aged 16 to 24 are regular users of social media. They are also the main victims of road accidents, twice as likely to be involved in accidents as older, more experienced drivers. Every year nearly 5,000 young people aged 18 to 24 are killed in road accidents in the European Union on average. Named Tom European Tour, Michelin’s game invites young people who drive – or are learning to drive – to travel with a virtual character named Tom through the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Spain.
Charles English, managing director/owner of Alba Tyres in Leeds, will take part in the ‘Only Fools Jump In’ team charity skydive on 1 April to raise a total of £20,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA). Funds raised will support people suffering from MNDA in the Yorkshire area and ongoing research; English’s support of the charity is motivated in part by his godson, James’s loss of his father-in-law to the disease last year. They say that all publicity is good publicity, but Goodyear executives probably could have done without the publicity it got from CNBC last week. The consumer news and financial information channel asked why Goodyear shares had fallen 13 per cent this year in an improving environment during a 7 March broadcast. The answer that Jeffery B. Middleswart, president, director of research at Behind the Numbers, was blunt to say the least: “This is a company basically bleeding to death.”
Automotive Charity BEN has been awarded a 2-star rating in the Sunday Times 'Best Companies to Work For 2012'. The award which placed BEN as one of the country's best not-for-profit organisations was presented to HR Director, Sara Howard at a special ceremony by Best Companies Director, Glenn Dimelow.
In total 1082 organisations entered for this year's awards and places were determined based on employee feedback on areas ranging from leadership and management vision to wellbeing and personal development.
The Royal Automobile Club will host its first Charity Cup Golf Competition to raise money for BEN at Woodcote Park on Tuesday 24 April. The Club will donate all funds raised from the event to BEN, the UK's only charity for those who work in the automotive and related industries, as well as their dependents; and the Henry Surtees Foundation.
Throughout November 2011 automotive industry charity, BEN ran a text competition with a special edition, top of the range Snap-on McLaren Sport tool box which had been signed by Formula One's Jenson Button the star prize. 4,300 people entered, raising £4,000 for BEN. Entrants were required to text the answer to the question: ‘BEN is the official charity of which industry?' Thousands of people responded with the correct answer – automotive – and picked at random was the winner from Devon.
More bus and coach workshop technicians have taken part in the Bridgestone Roadside course; a two-day initiative that trains technicians in health and safety, customer care and assessing the roadside situation. Three member companies of the Guild of British Coach Operators – Skills Coaches from Nottingham, Selwyns from Runcorn and Richmond's from Cambridge – have attended the course, which qualifies delegates for 14 hours of Driver CPC accreditation under JUAPT (CRS 1280 and 1117 modules) and awards them with a Roadside Technician ID card.

Bridgestone has announced that it will support Midlands-based Acorns Children’s Hospice in 2012, with fundraising events including a monthly “Dress Down Friday”. The Hospice was established in 1988, providing care for terminally ill youngsters and their families in the Midlands. The Acorns provides tailored nursing, emergency care and short breaks for the children at each of its three hospices in addition to continual support for their families from its highly trained Community Team.
Pirelli hosted an international conference on safety and the environment at its Milan headquarters on 23 January, during which the company’s chairman, Marco Tronchetti Provera signed a voluntary agreement with the Ministry for the Environment and Land and Sea Protection to reduce the climate impact deriving from activities related to the production and use of its tyres. The conference, attended by minister, Corrado Clini, who also signed the agreement, was entitled “Driving Sustainability: a safe road to the future” and marked Pirelli’s own Sustainability Day.
The Infinity Tyres Foundation has donated funds to the Indian High School of Dubai (IHS) to “help develop its infrastructures and broaden its programme of scholarships”. The Foundation said the funds were “intended to reinforce our interest in the future leaders of tomorrow and our strong commitment to making a better and fairer society”. Infinity hopes that its donation will allow the school to decrease student fees and award generous scholarships.
Automotive industry charity, BEN will hold its inaugural BEN Blades Summer Ball on Thursday, 21 June 2012 at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire. The event, raising money for the charity, will include two aerobatics displays, with the opportunity for attendees to take a ride in one of several classic flying machines. This will be followed by a Champagne Reception and a three-course meal.
The BBC’s primetime entertainment programme The One Show has clarified the advice it originally gave in a studio presentation following a report highlighting the dangers of driving on illegal tyres. The original report, which featured TyreSafe and was aired during October’s tyre safety month, prominently feature key safety messages.
