Melksham Workers Hold Overtime Strike

Staff at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s plant in Melksham went on a no overtime strike last week to protest changes to working conditions at the facility, reports Tire Review. It is believes that 500 workers there – members of the Unite union – have refused to take any overtime in a dispute over benefit changes, which include a cut in paid holidays, capping sick days, elimination of a late Saturday shift, and an increase in the mandatory retirement age, as well as overtime that has been forced by staff reductions at the plant.

Charlie Shears Seals Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship

With a victory and a third place finish in Rounds 12 and 13 of the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship at Mosport, Canada, Charlie Shears clinched both the Lites1 class overall championship and the Masters Class Championship with a race weekend to spare. The American tyre manufacturer-backed Championship features racing between two sports racer prototype classes, Lites 1 and Lites 2, presenting a dimension of competition as drivers must be aware of classes with distinctly different speeds, a similar challenge to that faced by the drivers of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.

American Tyre Manufacturers Announce Price Hikes to Meet Rubber Costs

Major American tyre-makers, Goodyear and Cooper have announced that they will raise North American retail prices by up to 6.5 per cent, tracking the continuing rise of raw material costs. Spokespeople for both companies told Bloomberg today that following the price rises implemented in June, materials such as rubber have continued to rise, making further hikes necessary.

Cooper Tire’s Tupelo factory in the US state of Mississippi has achieved a million man-hours without recording a single lost time injury. The tyre maker states this milestone “demonstrates the company's commitment to the highest standards of safety performance and its desire to create a safer working environment.”

Cooper Tire Continues ‘Happy Soccer Class’ at Yellow Mountain

In China, Cooper Tire has been continuing a series of measures designed to integrate the company into the communities in which it operates. One such programme is Cooper’s ‘Happy Soccer Class’ which recently saw Alex Koi, general manager of Cooper Tire China operations, lead his team of employees to Tanjiaqiao Central Primary School in Huangshan, also known as the Yellow Mountain, Anhui province. Since January 2010, Cooper Tire working closely with famous soccer commentator Huang Jianxiang, officially launched the Cooper Tires charity soccer with the theme of ‘The wheel of Joy – happy soccer class’. This campaign aims to teach soccer skills to the children.

Vergne the First Frenchman to win Cooper Tires British F3 Series

Red Bull Junior driver Jean-Eric Vergne has become the first Frenchman to win the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Series, after wrapping up the title with three races still to run at Brands Hatch on 25-26 September. Vergne could break the all-time record number of British F3 wins in a season. “To be the first Frenchman to win such a prestigious championship feels incredible,” said Vergne. “It's been an amazing season so far; big big thanks to all the guys from Carlin. We didn't make any mistakes this season; they provided me with a fantastic car, which is why we have been able to win the championship so early.”

Cooper Sponsors College American Football Halftime Show

Continuing the association of tyre manufacturers and half-time entertainment in American Football games (henceforth “football”), Cooper Tires has taken up an exclusive sponsorship with the ABC College Football Halftime Show for this season, which began over the weekend. The Cooper Tire Halftime Show will win coverage for the company where college football is broadcast, namely on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and on-line at ESPN.com. The sponsorship, which will feature the Cooper logo in a number of prominent locations, runs until mid-October. The Halftime Show brings viewers all the latest scores, game previews and expert analysis that college football fans have come to expect.

Hercules Aims to Gain Traction With WebFOCUS

Hercules Tire & Rubber Company has reportedly installed Information Builders WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) platform to develop web-based dashboards and self-service reporting applications for managers throughout the organization. Hercules will use WebFOCUS to analyze sales data, manage inventory levels, synchronize warehouse operations and improve fill rates.

Cooper Encourages Staycationers to Inflate Tyres Correctly

Cooper Tire Europe has urged motorists to check tyre pressures at least monthly and before long trips, and to refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook for the correct pressure when travelling fully laden, with the trend for overseas holidays down 15 per cent amongst Britons last year. The company suggests the average family car carrying a full family on holiday will have to transport an additional 201kg in passengers and luggage, compared to the typical ‘driver-only’ car journey. Cooper says many do not realise they need to set their tyre pressures to compensate for the additional load being placed on the tyres in order to reduce the risk of accidents and premature tyre wear.

Avon Announces Competition Winner of TVR Sportscar

Avon Tyres has named Ipswich resident Stacey Biltcliffe as the winner of its competition, with the first prize a TVR Tamora, a powerful British sportscar considered a modern day classic among enthusiasts. The British tyre brand, which originally supplied OE fitment tyres for the TVR Tamora, gave away the 330bhp, 3.6-litre car in its competition open to any customer purchasing a set of four Avon tyres. The brand supported the promotion in dealers with point of sale materials including posters and leaflets, and via a promotional website.

Cooper's Findlay Plant Granted ISO 14001 Certification

Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Findlay, Ohio plant has been awarded IS0 14001 environmental management system (EMS) certification. In doing so, it has become the company’s third US tyre manufacturing facility to gain this certification; Cooper’s Texarkana, Arkansas plant was certified in May 2009 and Tupelo, Mississippi a year earlier.

Cooper Tire Shares Fall, But Analysts Say Market Underestimates Firm’s Potential

Shares in Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. fell by as much as 13 per cent yesterday (Thursday 5 August) after the tyre manufacturer reported second-quarter revenue below estimates and said earnings were hurt by increased raw material costs. However, market analysts reported that the market has underestimated Cooper’s “near term potential.”

Strong Sales Push Cooper to Strong First Half

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. continued its strong 2010, posting a 27 per cent increase in sales for the second quarter and a $57 million improvement in net income for the period, reports Tire Review. Cooper posted second quarter sales of $804 million. Net income for the period came in at $44 million, up $57 million versus the same period in 2009.

Cooper Pays Out Quarterly Dividend

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has announced a quarterly dividend of 10.5 cents per share on common stock, payable 30 September, 2010, to stockholders of record at the close of business 2 September, 2010. This will mark the 154th consecutive quarterly dividend paid by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company.
