Cooper Tire grant emphasises ‘renewed commitment’ to technical capabilities

Elaborating on news of a recent US$1.5 million grant received from a US Department of Energy (DOE) agency, Cooper Tire & Rubber says the funding will go towards accelerating the “development and refinement of innovative tyre design, construction, materials and reinforcement technologies focused on the replacement tyre market.” The grant from the DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy calls for Cooper to develop an ultra lightweight tyre that delivers a minimum three per cent improvement in vehicle fuel efficiency. The anticipated timeframe for achieving this breakthrough is three years.

Analysts cut Cooper price target, re-iterate “overweight rating”

The second quarter was tough, but look out for a rebound in the second half of 2011. That’s the view of Morgan Stanley analysts with reference to Cooper Tire’s dramatic recent share performance. Reducing the company’s price target from $30.00 to $27.00, the company re-iterated our overweight rating saying the tyre manufacturer shares offer “compelling value following [the] recent [stock] sell-off.”

Cooper gains grant for fuel-efficient tyre development

Goodyear is not the only US tyre maker amongst the 40 companies that received grants from the United States Department of Energy’s Office of Vehicle Technology; Cooper Tire & Rubber is another beneficiary, and has been awarded US$1.5 million towards its project to develop a new class of fuel efficient tyres for the replacement market. The tyres Cooper develops, the Department of Energy explains, are expected to utilise innovative materials technology and tyre design concepts in order to improve overall fuel efficiency by three per cent.

Cooper Tire a Sears Holdings ‘Partner in Progress’

Sears Holdings, parent company of US retail chains Sears and K-Mart, has named Cooper Tire & Rubber a 2010 Partner in Progress. In acknowledging receipt of this award, which Cooper Tire gained through the supply of its passenger and light truck tyres, the tyre maker notes that less than one per cent of the more than 30,000 Sears Holdings suppliers are recognised in this way each year.

Analysts: Cooper 2Q results a ‘big miss'

“We had expected the second quarter to be tough…for Cooper given the weak second industry shipment numbers and adverse mix, but we were surprised by how weak it actually was,” was the stark verdict of analysts in response to Cooper Tire & Rubber’s most recent financials. This is exemplified in the company’s profitability results.

Cooper profits down, even after sales increase

A faultering US tyre market contributed to poor second quarter results for Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. The tyre-maker saw second quarter net income of just $12 million, down nearly 38 per cent year-on-year, against sales of $922 million, up 15 per cent from the second quarter of 2010. For the entire first half, Cooper posted sales of $1.83 billion, up from $1.56 billion for the same period last year. Net income, however, came to $32.9 million, down considerably YoY from $67.3 million.

Three times the Avon at Spa 24 Hours

Avon has announced that three cars will race on its tyres in this year’s Spa 24 Hours, tripling the brand’s presence. One of three McLaren MP4-12C GT3 race cars will compete on the manufacturer’s tyres, as well as an independent Aston Martin DBRS9 and a Mercedes SLS. Considering its heritage as a motorsport brand, it comes as something of a surprise that last year’s Spa 24 Hours was its debut. Then, the Trackspeed Racing Porsche 997 RSR entry suffered mechanical problems after a competitive start, finishing in eleventh place. This year Avon hopes to prove the ability of its rubber over the entire duration.

Cooper refuses comment on Trayal investment reports

International News

Cooper has refused to comment on multiple Serbian news reports quoting Serbian finance secretary Miodrag Djidic as saying that Cooper Tire is interested in acquiring Trayal’s automobile tyre plant. When questioned on the subject, a Cooper Tire Europe spokesperson told Tyres & Accessories that’ the company’s “corporate policy is not to comment on rumour or speculation.”

Cooper a potential Trayal investor

Various Balkan region news sources have reported Cooper Tire & Rubber’s intention to invest in Serbia’s Trayal. The US firm’s plans apparently involve investing 50 million euros in Trayal over the next two years and increasing production from one million to 3.4 million tyres during that time and then boosting it to seven million over the subsequent two years.

The first 25 sizes of Kumho’s replacement for the KU19 and proven KU31 have been launched on the UK market. The Ecsta Le Sport KU39, to give it its full title, is an asymmetric ultra high performance tyre designed with Europe’s top car marques in mind, and was developed using the twin methods of the latest KADAS prediction tools and on Europe’s most demanding test tracks. The Y-speed rated product’s key selling points are its enhanced performance, braking in wet conditions and controlled ride and refinement, according to the Korean manufacturer. Its high grip tread compound delivers improved traction and braking performance, while its specially designed casing provides impressive high speed stability.

Cooper Tire & Rubber has launched a new-look and easier to navigate website (to be seen in all its splendour at www.coopertire.com, in case you were wondering) and this main site is supported by two new microsites dedicated to recently-released tyre ranges. The microsites, CooperZeon.com and CooperDiscoverer.com, support the Cooper Zeon RS3-STM and RS3-ATM, and Discoverer A/T3TM with technical, size and dealer information.

Cooper consigns Dean brand to history

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. is ending its Dean associate brand in North America, which it has produced since buying the former Dean Tire & Rubber Co. back in 1994. The Findlay, Ohio, tyre maker will focus its attention on its core Cooper, Mastercraft and Starfire brands. Cooper also produces and sells Avon motorcycle tyres, Mickey Thompson performance and off-road light truck tyres, and Roadmaster medium truck radials. Tire Review

Avon Centenary showbike debuts at Isle of Man TT

Avon Tyres is continuing its centenary celebrations with a special one-off showbike that made its public debut at this weekend’s Isle of Man TT races. Avon’s UK sales manager Gary Bretherton says: “We wanted to have a machine which truly reflected the modern edge of Avon Tyres and its products and the Yamaha YZF-R6 really fits the bill. The bike itself is fitted with a number of go-faster goodies and of course Avon’s own VP2 Supersport tyres. We have used the bike in posters and other promotional literature quite literally ‘reflecting’ a classic motorcycle from an earlier era. This shows both the proud history of Avon Tyres along with the cutting-edge product that our customers rely on to this day.”

Cooper Tires British F3 series delivers “hands-on learning” with motorsport

Students from St Matthias Primary School in Malvern, Worcestershire were given an “alternative learning” experience through motorsport when they were visited by the Cooper Tires British F3 series. The visit was part of an initiative to introduce the youngest generation to motorsport. The project was initiated by teacher Emma Rowe, who enlisted the help of the F3 championship promoter, the SRO Motorsports Group, to help bring motorsport to life for the pupils, asking them to design a “racing buggy”. Last Friday the primary school students were treated to a visit from reigning British F3 National class champion Menasheh Idafar and the T-Sport team.
