Cooper Tire has seen sales and profits rise in North America, while international figures have declined considerably. Overall, this amounts to small increases for the company. The company’s international operations (outside the Americas) loss of 1 million dollars is 8 million dollars down on the operating profit of 7 million dollars in the first quarter of 2018, which is largely explained by the 5 million dollars it has spent in ending light tyre production in Melksham, Wiltshire. Cooper expects these charges to amount to between 8 and 11 million dollars in the total year.
Cooper Tires has produced a new series of videos with ex-Formula 1 star and brand ambassador David Coulthard. In the new DriveTribe.com series, the tyre manufacturer challenges Coulthard to explore the role that tyres play in a range of extreme driving conditions.
The Manufacturing Institute has recognized Kathleen Slocum, senior manager, Corporate Quality for Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, with a Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award for 2019. Slocum is among 130 women nationally who earned the honour this year from a field of hundreds of nominees.
The million square foot (92,900 square metre), centrally-located warehouse that Cooper Tire & Rubber Company erected near three of its factories in the USA is now in operation. The new warehouse in Byhalia, Mississippi employs approximately 100 people and is Cooper’s largest distribution centre nationwide.
Christopher J. Eperjesy is joining Cooper Tire & Rubber Company as its chief financial officer and senior-vice president, effective 10 December. He will succeed Ginger Jones, whose intention to retire was announced earlier in the year.
Members of the Tire Industry Project (TIP) and other stakeholders came together on 25 October to celebrate the inauguration of a new platform for positively transforming the natural rubber supply chain. Cooper Tire Europe is continuing to supply tyres to the South Snowdonia Search and Rescue Team (SSSART), an action that is said to be helping the team of volunteers save lives in the most extreme conditions.
Working with the North Wales police, SSSART searches for missing people and carries out rescue operations in mountainous and very difficult to reach locations no matter what the weather conditions, helping hill-walkers, mountain bikers and anyone who gets in to difficulty in the wild and rugged terrain of South Snowdonia.
In 2016, Cooper Tire & Rubber invested some US$93 million to acquire a 65 per cent shareholding in Qingdao Ge Rui Da Rubber Co., Ltd (GRT). The remaining 35 per cent share in the China-based truck and bus radial manufacturing operation was retained by Qingdao Yiyuan Investment Co., Ltd. (QYI), however QYI is now selling its stake in the business. Sailun Jinyu Group Co., Ltd. has signed a share transfer agreement with QYI to acquire its 35 per cent interest in GRT for RMB 220 million (£24.4 million, US$32.0 million), subject to government approval.
Cooper Tire Europe has launched a new Cooper Brand Portal, providing online access to a host of digital assets for media and brand partner use. Product photography, event images and video content are now all readily available for download.

China’s largest tyre manufacturer, Zhongce Rubber, has entered the global top ten, research published today by Tyrepress shows. Best known in Europe for its Westlake brand, the company has pushed up in the rankings past Giti Tire – manufacturer of GT Radial – which did not supply 2017 figures before the deadline, Toyo Tires, and Cooper Tire & Rubber, which fell three places. Competition in the lower quarter of the top ten places is fierce, with turnovers for tyres between 2.4 billion euros (Cooper in 13th) and 3.2 billion euros (Maxxis in ninth).

The results reported by Cooper Tire & Rubber for the second quarter of 2018 were, says the company’s president and chief executive officer, “in line with our stated expectations.” It therefore came as no great surprise that net sales, operating income and net income were all lower year-on-year in the three months to 30 June 2018.
Cooper Tire & Rubber reports achieving net sales of US$601 million in the first quarter of 2018, a 6.5 per cent decrease on a year earlier. The tyre maker states that net sales were negatively impacted by $39 million of lower unit volume and $20 million of unfavourable price and mix, partially offset by $17 million of favourable foreign currency impact.
Cooper Tire Asia has earned the 2018 Statistical Quality Award and the Simultaneous Engineering (SE) Achievement Award from Great Wall Motors Company Limited. Great Wall is China’s largest SUV and pickup truck manufacturer, producing vehicles under the Haval and Great Wall brands. Cooper, which has been supplying original equipment tyres to Great Wall since 2011, was the only tyre company recognised by the automaker with these awards.
