Apollo: Cooper Chengshan on track despite strike reports

Following news of industrial opposition to the on-going Apollo/Cooper takeover and even strikes at Cooper Chengshan in China, company representatives have broadly confirmed that there has been disquiet. However, while the local news coverage suggests this has been the case for nearly a month, Apollo representatives did not confirm this detail and report that the deal is very much on-track and indeed entering the end-game of what they referred to as a “compelling strategic transaction”.

Reports: Cooper Chengshan strike over Apollo acquisition

Workers at Cooper Chengshan, a joint-venture between Cooper Tire & Rubber Company (USA) and Chengshan Group (China), are reportedly on a strike in protest against Apollo’s proposed acquisition of Cooper. If correct the reports could throw up a fairly significant spanner in the works as the trade union which represents workers at what is deemed to be “the largest, most profitable and fastest-growing factory of the eight” plants that come as part of the Cooper deal, Cooper Chengshan, have expressed their opposition to the deal.

Reifen China opens in Shanghai

News

The sixth Reifen China show has opened at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, with two neighbouring halls housing RubberTech China 2012 simultaneously. It is expected that the show will attract around 10,000 visitors over its three days, before wrapping up on Friday 16 November. Large stands near the entrance for leading Chinese manufacturers such as Double Coin, Shandong Linglong, Hangzhou Zongce and Cooper Chengshan greet the visitor, while less familiar and almost brand new names mingle with visiting stands from India (Apollo) and Europe (Deldo, Interstate and Profil) in the rest of the hall. Joint organisers Messe Essen – responsible for Germany's market-leading Reifen show – and the China United Rubber Corporation welcomed visitors on the first day; the latter's general manager Ma Junhua said that Reifen China's "six years of previous success" was "inseperable" from the support of visitors and exhibitors.

Reifen China 2011 opens

Reifen China 2011 opened its doors today to increased exhibitor numbers over the 2010 edition, with the exhibition's space records reportedly having been broken back in May. Exhibits appear to be mainly dominated by large and medium sized Chinese and Taiwan-based tyre manufacturers with the addition of relatively small tyremakers, wheel firms and equipment manufacturers also in attendance. Some well known names in attendance include: Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., Ltd., Double Coin Holdings, Shandong Linglong, Cooper Chengshan Shangdong Co., Ltd., Nankang Rubber Tire Corp, Shandong Wanda Boto Tyre, Guizhou Tyre Co., Ltd and Shandong Hengfeng Rubber & Plastics Co., Ltd to name but a few.

CITExpo exhibitor bookings approach the 200 mark

Although this year’s CITExpo is still several months’ away, the organiser of the Shanghai-based show reports that nearly 200 exhibitors have already booked space. As a result, halls one and two of the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center are already fully occupied and the organiser says the planned exhibition space in hall three is currently being “booked aggressively.” Reliable International Exhibition Services, the shows organiser, claims it is ready for this, the ninth CITExpo held, to be the largest ever – the 2011 show is expected to have a floor space of over 22,000 square metres and host major Chinese manufacturers plus international brands such as Cooper ChengShan Tire. The 6th Automotive Testing Expo will be held in the week following CITExpo.

Cooper JV Plant Earns 9001:2008 Quality Certification

The Mexico based Corporacion de Occidente joint venture, 58 per cent owned by Cooper Tire & Rubber, has earned the ISO 9001:2008 quality certification, joining six other Cooper Tire facilities – the company’s manufacturing facilities in Melksham plus its Findlay, Texarkana and Tupelo plants in the US plus its Cooper Kenda Tire joint venture in China and the Tall Timbers Mold Operations facility in Findlay – that hold this designation.

Reifen China 2010 Opens it Doors

For the fourth time in its history, Reifen China welcomed floods of visitors through the doors of the Shanghai New International Expo Center where over 100 exhibitors from some of the country's leading suppliers and traders were waiting to share details of the latest products and business developments. Like the 2009 show, this year's Reifen China doesn't have the near complete set of the top 10 Chinese tyremakers that the organisers have been able to attract in the past. However, Messe Essen GmbH's cooperation with the China United Rubber Corporation (CURC) and conceptual sponsor cooperation with Bundesverband Reifenhandel & Vulkaniseur-Handwerk e.V. (BRV – the German tyre distributor and vulcanisation association has managed to attract some of the biggest players in the business and certainly offer the largest scale and most attractive exhibition stands at any tyre show Tyres & Accessories has visited in the country.

Cooper Extends Chengshan Share to 65% for $18 million

Cooper Tire & Rubber company has extended its majority shareholding of it Chengshan (Shandong) Tire Co Ltd joint venture to 65 per cent. The share acquisition cost Cooper roughly $18 million and came at the behest of minority shareholder Chengshan Group, which exercised a so-called “put” option negotiated as part of the company’s initial Cooper Chengshan investment.

Cooper’s director of investor relations, Curtis Schneekloth, told Tyres & Accessories the transaction should be executed in the first half of this year, adding:

Cooper Reports $52 million Net Income for 2009

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company returned to profit, reporting net income of $52 million (£34.895 million; 38.439 million euros) for the year compared with losses of $219 million (£147 million; 161.890 million euros) in 2008. Annual sales of $2.8 billion (£1.878 billion; 2.086 billion euros) for 2009, were down 4 per cent from 2008.

Wang Takes on Cooper Kenda Controller Role

The controller of Cooper Tire’s Cooper Chengshan Tire joint venture in Rongchen City, China, William Wang, has been named the new controller of Cooper Kenda Tire Co., Cooper's manufacturing joint venture in Kunshan, China. Wang replaces Mark Ehren, who is on medical leave, and in his new position will be responsible for financial planning, preparation of the operation's financial statements, budgeting, internal controls and review and oversight of the general ledger to ensure the integrity and accuracy of accounts. In addition to his new role, Wang will continue responsibility for leading the enterprise resource planning initiative and key information technology projects in Cooper Chengshan to ensure the effective and efficient recording of accounting transactions.

Cooper Angels Draw a Crowd at Reifen China

Cooper Tires & Rubber Co. showcased 33 products under four brands at the third Reifen China show (11 – 13 November). Cooper officially launched its Chengshan CSC-5 and Austone SP-7 products at the show. The two are said to fit “all kinds of mid- to high-end sedans and roadsters.” In addition to two product launches, Cooper Tires also showed its “green way” philosophy for saving. However, it was the Cooper Angels (figureheads of the company’s Far Eastern TV advertising campaign) and the troop of dancers literally bussed in for the event that drew in the crowds.

According Reifen China’s organising company, Cooper Tires’ stand was one of the largest exhibitors in terms of size at the show. The stand was structured into four function areas which showcase four product categories: the domestically-made Zeon series passenger car tyres, Starfire saloon treads, Chengshan and Austone-branded passenger car tyres as well as the Dean TBR tyres. All the treads on display are manufactured by Cooper Chengshan, which fully reflects the technology and production strengths of Cooper's joint venture in China.

Reifen China Opens its Doors

The third Reifen China exhibition, held in Shanghai between 11 and 13 November 2009, opened its doors to 3769 visitors (412 international visitors) on the first day of the show. These were welcomed to the show by exhibitors mainly from the world's largest production market. In addition to the wide variety of Chinese and international tyre manufacturers and traders at the show, the 2009 event featured an increased number of retreading equipment and consumables companies (such as tyre valve suppliers) over previous years.

Steven Zhou Named New Cooper Chengshan General Manager

Chuck Taylor’s time in the role of general manager at Cooper Chengshan (Shandong) Tire Co. Ltd. (CCT) is drawing to a close, and Cooper Tire has named his successor. On December 11, new general manager Steven Zhou will take over responsibility for planning, directing and coordinating the manufacturing operations at CCT. Zhou will report directly to Asian Operations Vice President and General Manager Allen Tsaur.

Cooper to Free Up Domestic Capacity with China Imports

According to reports, Cooper Tire expects to receive around 2.5 million tyres from its Cooper Chengshan Tire facility in China during 2008. The total phase one capacity of the plant is 6.5 million units, and Cooper is planning an expansion of over two million tyres.
