Enlarged Slovakia tech centre opens as Continental prepares to increase R&D headcount

Continental is gearing up to increase its research and development workforce by 15 per cent at its Púchov site in Slovakia after the official opening of its expanded facility there. The company held an opening ceremony at its new Tires Technology Center today in the presence of Slovak Republic Prime Minster Róbert Fico, Continental Tire Division head Nikolai Setzer and representatives from local management and the workforce. The additional research and development capacity at Púchov was realised through a €7.5 million investment.

Gold-silver win for Continental in Polish tyre test

Continental shares news that its ContiWinterContact TS850 finished first place in a winter tyre test conducted by Polish car magazine “motor”. The latest issue (43/14) of the publication compared seven size 195/65 R15 tyres. The winning ContiWinterContact TS850 was rated “highly recommended” and described as being “very good in the wet, very good on dry roads and good balance on snow.”

Third-quarter income up 14.1 per cent at Continental

Following what it calls a “solid third quarter”, Continental Corporation has confirmed its forecast for the 2014 fiscal year. The tyre and automotive systems manufacturer reported net sales of €8.7 billion in the period between 1 June and 30 September, a year-on-year increase of 3.8 per cent. EBIT decreased 28.0 per cent to €637.8 million in the three-month period, with EBIT margin declining from 10.6 per cent in Q3 2013 to 7.4 per cent, however net income rose 14.1 per cent to €495.1 million. Earnings per share amounted to €2.47, up from €2.17 a year earlier.

Ex-Continental man to head Apollo Tyres’ European & American operations

Apollo Tyres Ltd. has appointed a new president for Europe and the Americas and CEO of Apollo Vredestein B.V. The role has been taken on by Mathias Heimann, who is based in the company’s European headquarters in Enschede, the Netherlands. Heimann began in his new position in early October and succeeds Luis Ceneviz, who has left the company and, according to informed sources, returned to his home country, Brazil.

Nizhnekamskshina produces 2 millionth truck tyre

Russian tyre manufacturer Nizhnekamskshina has is broken through the 2 million all-steel radial truck Tyre barrier at its Nizhnekamsk factory. Nizhnekamskshina commissioned the factory in 2011 after a two-year, $575 million construction project, according to online news reports.

Continental furthers Asian football activities with Chinese sponsorship deal

Football is Continental’s chosen brand promotion method in many parts of the world, and its involvement in the game has been extended by its entry into a four-year collaboration with the Chinese Football Association. This deal with the CFA was announced at the start of Continental’s AFC Asian Cup 2015 Australia Trophy Tour on 26 September. Continental states that this new agreement, along with its AFC Asian Cup 2015 sponsorship, represents a specific focus on the Asia Pacific region.

Bentley’s Dr Ariane Reinhart joins Continental’s executive board

Dr Ariane Reinhart (44) assumed her post as Executive Board Member for Human Resources at Continental AG today (1 October), raising the company’s executive board to nine members. The supervisory board of automotive supplier/tyre manufacturer appointed Dr. Reinhart during a meeting on 25 April 2014. Her contract runs for three years.

Taraxagum – Continental unveils brand name for dandelion tyre rubber

More than three years ago, Continental stated that rubber sourced from the Russian dandelion was of “great interest” to the company as a potential substitute for natural rubber in its tyres. It commenced a joint research project with the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology and reported a breakthrough late last year. Now, at Continental’s press conference at the start of the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Germany, Tire division head Nikolai Setzer has introduced the brand under which the company will market its dandelion rubber products.

Continental AG has announced that its first third generation truck tyres will be available as retreaded tyres from October. Specifically it will be the first hot retreaded ContiRe EcoPlus HT3 from the ContiLifeCycle plant in Hanover.

Continental adds starter batteries to VDO portfolio

Automotive batteries are the latest product to enter the VDO product portfolio, and Continental has launched the new range at this year’s Automechanika Frankfurt show. The VDO battery line-up includes a total of nine EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) starter batteries and optimally targets the “relevant sectors” of the central European vehicle market. All VDO batteries come with a two year warranty.

Groundbreaking held for Continental’s performance tyre, technology facility

Yesterday, Continental officially broke ground on its new High Performance Technology Center (HPTC), a new “factory within a factory” at the company’s Korbach plant in Germany. The HPTC is being erected on a 12,000 square metre site and the building is expected to be completed by the end of May 2015, with operations at the completed facility scheduled to begin in July 2016.
