Price increases for Continental tyres already implemented

Against the backdrop of the half-year results that Continental presented in August, several German media sources reported price increases of three to five per cent for Continental tyres. Although Continental released no statement detailing the increases, it confirms that the new pricing was implemented to better align its tyre prices with the cost of raw materials, which has strongly risen since the fourth quarter of last year, as well as currency developments.

Continental tyre prices going up

According to several German media sources, the price of Continental tyres will increase in the second half of this year. Wolfgang Schäfer, chief financial officer at Continental, indicates that tyre prices will go up by between three and five per cent in order to compensate for higher natural rubber costs.

Continental net income down: Raw material costs deflate tyre-related earnings

Although sales rose, sharp increases in raw material costs held back earnings within Continental’s Tire and ContiTech divisions in the first half of 2017. Reporting the company’s first half and second quarter results, Executive Board chairman Dr Elmar Degenhart shared that despite a 9.4 per cent year-on-year increase in sales during the six months to 30 June, to 8.6 billion euros, these costs impacted the Continental Rubber Group’s earnings by some 300 million euros. Rubber Group EBIT dropped 11.2 per cent to 1.2 billion euros in the first half of the year and the margin contracted from 17.7 per cent to 14.4 per cent.

Continental tops Auto Express tyre test

The current issue of Auto Express looks at the best tyres available in Britain, and Continental is very happy with the outcome of this year’s test. Its ContiPremiumContact 5 has been voted the top tyre in the publication’s evaluation of 11 size 205/55R16 summer tyres, and Continental notes that the award “recognises the ContiPremiumContact 5 across a broad spectrum, taking top spot for dry handling, wet handling and wet braking.”

CST appoints Americas region field engineers

Two new field engineer appointments at Continental Commercial Specialty Tires (CST) will support customers in the Americas. Albert Sumera will be responsible for the earthmover, industrial, solid tyre and other products in the USA and Canada, while Robert Reid will cover South America and Mexico. Both will report to Adrian Leu, senior manager technical solutions the Americas. Continental comments that the new positions are part of its CST 2025 growth strategy and coincide with the appointment of two new field engineers for EMEA.

Continental awards top Automotive Group suppliers

At its 2017 Supplier Day, Continental’s Automotive Group honoured 15 companies with Supplier of the Year awards for their performance during the 2016 production year. Contenders from the more than 2,700 series suppliers whose components Continental used last year were evaluated in the 15 category awards for quality, technology, costs and purchasing conditions and logistics. The category winners were awarded by Dr Elmar Degenhart, chairman of Continental AG’s Executive Board, and Günter Fella, head of purchasing at Continental Automotive.

Red Dot Awards for five tyres

The best designers and manufacturers of the year were recognised on 3 July at the Red Dot Gala 2017 event in Essen, Germany, and amongst the products selected by the 9-strong Red Dot judging panel were five tyres; these gained ‘Red Dot’ awards in Product Design. The awarded tyres are the Continental PremiumContact 6, Federal 595RS-RR, Laufenn I FIT, Kumho Crugen HP71 and Nexen N’Fera RU1.

Cambrian Tyres: Anlas brand launch, extensions to Conti, Bridgestone offer

Success as a tyre wholesaler depends upon range, availability, and also a measure of exclusivity, and this applies as much in the two-wheel segment as it does for car tyres. Britain’s largest independent two-wheel tyre distributor deals in more than a dozen brands, from household names to those little known outside riding circles, and is sole UK distributor for several ranges. 20 million tyres a year by 2022: Continental launches next expansion phase in Hefei

An agreement was reached last week on the fourth phase of expansion at the Continental passenger car tyre factory in Hefei, China. In a Chinese-language statement, the Hefei Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone reports that a signing ceremony was held on 5 July to mark the start of a project that will see capacity at the Hefei plant rise by 2 million tyres a year over the next half-decade, from a current capacity of 8 million tyres per annum to 20 million passenger car tyres a year by 2022.

Korean OEMs switching to European tyre brands

International News

Sales of imported tyres in Korea increased by more than 40 per cent in the January to April period when compared with 2016 figures, according to the Korea Tire Manufacturers Association (KOTMA).

If this pace continues, imported tyres will set a record high this year. According to KOTMA, this is largely due to Hyundai Motor and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors introducing imported tyres on their models, media said.

Continental acquires mobility intelligence provider Quantum Inventions

Another acquisition for Continental. Days after the German company reported taking a minority share in French autonomous driving company EasyMile SAS, it announced it has finalised its acquisition of Singapore based mobility intelligence provider Quantum Inventions. Continental hasn’t disclosed how much it paid for the firm.

Continental acquires share in driverless mobility firm EasyMile

Technology company and tyre maker Continental has agreed to acquire a minority share participation in French autonomous driving company EasyMile SAS, a firm currently focusing on the development of driverless electric shuttles. In addition to the equity investment, the companies plan close cooperation in the fields of environmental sensors, braking systems and driving safety technologies. The transaction’s completion is subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities.

50 years of testing at the Contidrom

When the Contidrom first opened in 1967, just eight Continental staff members wore employed at the test facility. Their activities centred on the site’s original 2.8-kilometre oval track, and all work, such as developing standards and providing comparable data, was performed entirely without aid of computers. The Contidrom has significantly expanded over the years, and now, as its 50th birthday draws near, Continental says the facility is “more important than ever” for the company.

Continental teaching cars how to park

Parking is arguably the most tedious aspect of the whole driving experience, and therefore a new development from Continental should be welcomed with open arms. The technology company has come up with a solution that relieves drivers from recurring parking routines. One a driver has parked in their regular space, and done a good job of it, their car can repeat the manoeuvre time and time again with no human assistance.

Continental partners with MOL to supply sensor-equipped tyres as OE

Continental Commercial Specialty Tyres (CST) and the Belgian specialist for port tow tractors and trailer solutions MOL have announced their cooperation at the TOC fair in Amsterdam. The fair for port, shipping and terminal technology took place from 27 June through to 29 June in Amsterdam.
