Thai government approves US$400 million investment in Continental tyre plant

The Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has approved an additional US$400 million investment by Continental Tyres (Thailand) Co. Ltd. in the firm’s Rayong production base. According to BOI, the funds are for the expansion of tyre production in the country, boosting output to 7.8 million tyres per year. Of course, BOI officials also noted that such an investment consolidates “Thailand’s status as the World’s second largest tyre production base”.

4 automotive suppliers among ‘World’s Most Sustainable Companies’, Continental 2nd

Earlier this year, Time magazine and Statista recognised the top 500 most sustainable companies in the world, 2024. Shortly afterwards, we reported how Pirelli, Continental and Hankook were rated as the top three tyremakers in the list. However, four automotive suppliers could also be found in the ranking, of which Continental AG came out 2nd.

West Mercia Police completes tyre training at ContiAcademy

Continental Tyres

Continental Tyres’ training school, the ContiAcademy, recently ran a workshop on tyre safety and performance for officers from West Mercia Police. 13 delegates from the force completed a mix of theory-based and practical training at the Lutterworth facility, aiming to understand the safety-critical role tyres play in vehicles. Modules looked in depth at the fundamentals of tyre design, engineering and physics. Steve Howat, technical services general manager at Continental Tyres, called the force’s decision to work with the company to deliver this vital training as “an endorsement of our commitment and capabilities at the ContiAcademy.” The training comes ahead of October’s Tyre Safety Month, with both Conti and the force registered supporters of road safety organisation TyreSafe.

Continental tyres OE on new smart #3 Brabus

The new smart #3 Brabus edition is begin factory equipped with EcoContact 6 Q tyres from Continental. Specifically, the SUV coupé is being fitted with 245/40 R20 99V XL tyres as original equipment. The smart #3 is the second model produced by the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese manufacturer Geely.

Case for fitting all-season tyres over specialist winter tyres demonstrated in Autozeitung test

German magazine Autozeitung has tested seven winter tyres and three all-season tyres, competing in the usual range of dry, wet and snow conditions. The test appears to confirm the quality of all-season tyres, with all three tyres receiving comparatively high overall marks and the coveted “Highly Recommended” grade. This result was mostly due to the all-season tyres’ consistently better performance in the dry. Conversely, on snow, the all-rounder tyres only lagged slightly behind the models specialised for the colder season, though Autozeitung adds that the performance gap between the two types of tyre in winter conditions increases as the temperature drops. Having tested the tyres on snow in temperatures between -10 and -15 Celsius, the magazine confirmed that the all-season tyres tested are “completely sufficient” for “normal requirements”, while recommending the specialist winter tyres “for maximum performance in tough, winter conditions”.

Tunnell Grab Services calls Continental tyre choice ‘a no brainer’

Since its formation in 2001, Tunnell Grab Services (TGS) has provided specialist grab, plant and digger hire, alongside aggregate supplies and contract work for domestic, commercial and industrial customers throughout the South East of England. TGS trucks have been fitted with Continental family tyres for more than a decade.

Continental building own USA distribution centre

Continental serves its customers in the USA via seven distribution centres, none of which it owns. This will soon change, as the company has announced an investment into its first fully owned tyre distribution centre in the US market. The facility is to be located in Texas, within the Dallas-Fort-Worth-Metroplex, and will have a capacity to store more than 800,000 tyres – with potential for future expansion. Construction commences this month, with Continental aiming to start operations in the centre in 2026.

Continental PremiumContact 7 tops What Car? tyre test

Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 SUV gave it a run for its money, but Continental’s PremiumContact 7 recently won the What Car? With a weighted score of 86 per cent, the PremiumContact 7 was one percentage point ahead of the second-placed Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 SUV (85%). Michelin’s Primacy 4+ rounded off the podium, albeit some way back, with a weighted score of 71 per cent. The test also considered a number of tyres outside the premium stable. Interestingly, What Car? ranked Triangles EffexSport TH202 ahead of the GT Radial FE2 SUV and the Landsail LS588 SUV.

Continental names Lisa Reiners as agricultural tyres product manager

Lisa Reiners has been in charge of product management for agricultural tyres in the Specialty Tires business area of Continental AG since 1 August 2024. She succeeds Benjamin Hübner in that role. The graduate in economics previously worked as product manager for private brands in Continental’s Passenger and Light Truck Tires business unit.

100 millionth PCR tyre rolls off production line at Continental Hefei

The 100 millionth PCR tyre has rolled off the production line at Continenta’s Hefei, China, factory, according to the company. Due to OE contracts with some of the largest and fastest-growing EV-makers, the factory is becoming increasingly of key importance to tyre supplies of electric vehicle OEMs.

Conti changes ‘WinterContact’ range’s naming convention

If you look at the last three generations of Conti winter tyres, almost anyone in the industry could guess the next name in the range ‘WinterContact TS 850’ (2012), ‘WinterContact TS 860’ (2015) and ‘WinterContact TS 870’ (2020/2021). But we would all be wrong. As was previously the case with its summer tyres and the ‘EcoContact 7’ and ‘EcoContact 7 S’ models, the manufacturer has now also introduced a new winter profile without making a big fuss about it, which, contrary to the naming convention previously used for its winter tyres, is called ‘WinterContact 8 S’. The ‘S’ in the name obviously stands for sport, as the manufacturer describes the model as its sportiest winter tyre to date.

Continental recalls >146,000 car tyres and 100s of truck tyres in North America

Across the Atlantic, Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (Continental) is conducting two parallel recalls. The largest relates to Continental’s ProContact GX AO tyres. According to US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filings, centres on size 255/35R19 96H XL fitments of the tyre made between 9 May 2021 and 17 August 2024 and relates to potential belt separation issues. Continental reports that ProContact GX AO was mainly sold as an OE fitment for the Audi A4/A5. But approximately 10 per cent of the affected tyres were sold in the US replacement market.  As many as 146,568 tyres are covered by the recall and Continental estimates that 100 per cent have the described defect.
