The HiQ fast fit network recently held its second national franchisee conference of 2010, an occasion that gave the network’s commercial manager Farrell Dolan the opportunity to announce two new programmes for 2011. The network plans to raise customer service standards with the introduction of a six figure mystery shopper programme and an Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) programme for HiQ technicians across the network.
With only six months to go before the 24th Autopromotec, the specialised international exhibition of automotive equipment and aftermarket products (Bologna Exhibition Centre, 25 – 29 May 2011), the organisers have announced strong numbers of foreign exhibitors as well as buyer and dealer delegations for 2011. As a result the next Autopromotec will reportedly have three halls of exhibits from the tyre and ancillary industries.
A ‘six figure’ investment in online marketing has been outlined at the recent HiQ national conference. This sum will cover a pay per click and rich media campaign driving new business to the fast fit network’s website, where each of the company’s 150 centres hosts its own bespoke micro site. The year-long online campaign will begin in January and target popular search engines including Google, Bing and Yahoo. HiQ says it will also shortly announce some new strategic online partnerships in the affinity marketing arena.
Ahead of a company conference call scheduled for December 9, Titan International chairman and CEO Maurice M. Taylor Jr. declared “2010 has been a great building year for Titan and I believe that 2011 will be our best year ever from what I see today.”
At its second 2010 national conference, HiQ announced what it calls a number of historic milestones in the development of the UK’s only hard franchise fast fit network. Franchisees at the two-day workshop and business forum event were welcomed by recently appointed HiQ retail director Peter Tye, who shared news of developments within the network on the second anniversary of it becoming a fully franchised operation.
Autopromotec 2011 will see a new initiative introduced to the show especially targeted at the industrial sector. Named the Autopromotec Industrial Vehicles Service, the feature will include a tour designed exclusively for exhibitors in maintenance and servicing and road transport vehicles alongside a special logo to identify exhibitors of equipment, components and spare parts for trucks within the pavilions of Autopromotec. The biennial international trade fair for automotive equipment and the aftermarket will hold its 24th edition in the Bologna trade fair area from 25-29 May 2011.
Michelin won the ‘Manufacturing in Action’ award at The Manufacturer of the Year Awards 2010, beating the huge Indian owned steel giant TATA. At a ceremony held on 18 November at Chesford Grange, Kenilworth, Michelin Stoke factory manager Peter Marsh and training manager Mick Cole accepted the award from guest speaker Lord Digby Jones.
Michelin scooped the top prize in the Manufacturing in Action category ahead of nearest rivals TATA Steel, Howden Compressors and Aesica Pharmaceuticals. This year's event was the ninth annual The Manufacturer of the Year Awards.

After nine months of construction, on November 18 the final steel beam was hoisted into place on the Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC (BATO) state-of-the-art Technical Center in Akron, Ohio in a small topping off ceremony. This final beam to be manoeuvered into place bore the signatures of many employees at the current technical centre, many of whom watched its installation via web conference. The beam is situated at the highest point of the US$100 million dollar facility.
The Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau has appointed David Stevens, 42, as its new managing director, reports Tire Review. Stevens will replace interim managing director Marvin Bozarth, who had filled the role after the TRIB board of directors dismissed long-time managing director Harvey Brodsky on 5 October. Stevens’ appointment was unanimously agreed upon by the board, which had been searching for a new managing director for the last few weeks, incoming TRIB board president Bob Majewski told media during a press conference Wednesday at the Global Tire Expo/SEMA Show.
Sibur is planning to exit the tyre business “eventually,” in a move that would mark the end of the firm’s tyre subsidiary – Sibur-Russian Tyres – in its current form. Speaking to journalists at a recent press conference, Dmitry Konov, chair of the executive board and president of Sibur said he expects a significant degree of consolidation amongst the Russian tyre makers in the coming years. The company’s eventual aim is to dispose of the tyre production assets “at a profit,” he explained.
Michelin North America’s truck tyre division was recently honoured by the American Trucking Associations (ATA) with the 2010 Mike Russell “Good stuff” Trucking Image Award as the industry supplier winner, reports Tire Review. The award, which recognizes those that creatively generate positive awareness of the trucking industry, was presented to company officials at the annual ATA Management Conference and Exhibition last week in Phoenix, Arizona.
Stapleton’s beat off stiff competition to be named as Tyre Wholesaler of the Year at the NTDA Tyre and Fast Fit Awards 2010, which was held at Manchester’s Hilton Deansgate alongside the Brityrex International exhibition in the Manchester Central conference centre on 6 October 2010. The title tops a positive year for the company, which has seen it acquire previously Pirelli-owned wholesale operation CPK and achieve total sales of over £300 million.
Pirelli has announced plans to consolidate its already strong position in South America by expanding production at its Merlo, Buenos Aires, Argentina factory to 6 million units a year by 2013 with investment of US$100 million. The announcement prompted news agency Reuters to add Pirelli to its list of Italian “stocks to watch” on 21 October, owing to the fact that Argentina is “South America's number two economy.” By the end of 2010, Pirelli’s Argentinean sales are expected to grow by 55 per cent to $365 million and the target for 2013 is $500 million. This compares with 235 million dollars in 2009. Some news reports suggested the move means the firm "will move part of its production to Argentina, from Brazil and Europe." Company representatives did not comment on what, if any, affect the expansion plans would have on its existing European production capacity.
Goodyear states it will report its third quarter 2010 financial results before markets open on Thursday, 28 October. An investor conference call will follow the announcement at 10:00 (15:00 local time in the UK). Richard J Kramer, chairman and chief executive officer, and Darren R Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer will participate in the call.
