Murfitts cleared in tyre blaze trial

A tyre recycling firm which suffered a huge blaze two years ago has been cleared of allowing waste to harm people’s health after the case against it collapsed. In 2009 a fire started among the 2,000 tonnes of tyres and rubber being stored on the company's site, burning for seven weeks. Murfitts Industries, based in Wisbech Road, Littleport, faced trial at Cambridge Crown Court after pleading not guilty to a charge of treating, keeping or disposing controlled waste, contrary to section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act.

Hauliers warned that future low emission zones "are inevitable"

Keyuan notified of NASDAQ delisting

Despite being informed that Keyuan Petrochemicals’ stock may be delisted from the NASDAQ, company chairman and CEO Chungfeng Tao states demand for its products “remains strong”. The Chinese petrochemical product manufacturer disclosed on July 11 that it received a letter from the NASDAQ regarding a delisting of its stock based on a review of the company and pursuant to NASDAQ Listing Rule 5101 and Listing Rule 5250 (c)(1). Keyuan says it has requested a hearing to appeal this decision and adds that its management is “working diligently with all relevant authorities to regain compliance with its regulatory requirements.”

Nasdaq rejects ShengdaTech delisting appeal

A request for continued listing on the Nasdaq submitted by nano-precipitated calcium carbonate manufacturer ShengdaTech, Inc. has been turned down. According to the Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel determination, the Nasdaq trading of shares in the China-based company was suspended as of the opening of business on June 10, pending the formal delisting of the company's securities from the exchange. As a result the ShengdaTech’s common stock commenced trading on the over-the-counter market at the opening of trading on June 10, 2011. ShengdaTech says it intends to appeal the Panel's determination to the Nasdaq Listing and Hearing Review Council.

BSI updates vehicle repair specification

BSI has launched an update of the highly successful Publicly Available Specification for vehicle damage repair process, PAS 125:2011. To date over 800 bodyshops have been awarded a Kitemark licence to the original PAS 125:2007. The revisions in PAS 125:2011 address the latest technological innovation in the motor industry and best practice within bodyshops. All changes to the PAS were agreed by industry representatives and public comment, to ensure that compliance with the PAS continues to reassure vehicle owners of the quality and safety standards in the vehicle damage repair process.

PAS 107 quality products from the tyre recovery association

Tyre Recovery Association members will be the first in Britain to offer Quality Protocol (QP) audits for tyre derived rubber materials to all its members. Based on the BSI Publicly Available Standards (PAS 107) for these materials, qualifying TRA member companies will, from this autumn, be able to acquire new product status for a range of size reduced materials derived from old tyres. Until now all such materials, however valuable, have been deemed waste and therefore subjected to permit and transportation constraints.

Starco introduces ‘lite’ version of puncture-free Flex range

When Tyres & Accessories spoke to Starco at last year’s Reifen trade show in Germany, it was apparent from the products the Danish company had on display that it was moving away from its traditional role as solely a tyre wholesaler to also being a manufacturer of wheels and assemblies with an increasing focus on specialty wheels. Starco has now broadened its activities in this direction with the release of a further development of its Flex range – the Flex lite.

The Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA) has launched a new website for its members. Not only does the new site have a much improved visual design, reflecting the association’s recent decision to develop a more two-directional communications strategy, but it has also been structured to be a resource for members.

ETRMA approves Rubber Consultants as certified testing body

Hertford based firm Rubber Consultants reports its acknowledgement by the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers' Association (ETRMA) as a certified independent testing body. One of the first jobs Rubber Consultants carried out for the ETRMA in this capacity was to independently verify the initial findings of the association’s tests into compliance of the Reach regulation regarding PAH oils.

Cooper Tire appoints new chief of legal department

As of April 4, Stephen Zamansky will succeed Jim Kline in the position of vice president, general counsel and secretary at Cooper Tire & Rubber. Kline will retire on May 31, 2011 after leading Cooper’s legal department for eight years. In his new role, in which he reports directly to company chairman, CEO and president Roy Armes, Zamansky will oversee Cooper's legal affairs, environmental affairs, and corporate governance and compliance functions.

Three Arrested Over Illegal Waste Tyre Exports

The Environment Agency reports the January 20 arrest of three men suspected of illegally exporting waste tyres into Vietnam and Hong Kong – destinations to which the export of waste tyres is prohibited. The trio – a 60 year old from Chelmsford, Essex, a 32 year old from Spalding, Lincolnshire and a 61 year old from Swanscombe, Kent – were arrested on suspicion of a number of fraud offences.

Bridgestone Sales Companies Gain ISO Certification

Bridgestone Europe’s group of 18 national sales companies has been accredited to the revised standard ISO 9001:2008 by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. Announcing the accreditation, Bridgestone Europe’s senior vice president of Sales & Marketing, Takashi Tomioka, commented: “ISO 9001 is an important standard which we have held since 1992. Ensuring that our sales companies operate to these stringent requirements provides a systematic and visible way to lead and operate our sales organisations. Tyreman Develops Meet and Greet System, Researches Labelling

Nowadays a serious tyre distribution business simply has to have an effective e-commerce system. Many do and many software companies offer perpetually improving versions of their respective systems. Something about Tyreman that caught Tyres & Acessories’ attention was its recent efforts to – excuse the pun – interface with real people as well as all the necessary computer systems and future legislatory requirements.

At the start of 2010 Tyreman announced that development of its Tyreman B2B system had reached the point that an innovative B2B SMS module had been added. This allows a text message to be sent to the mobile phone of a customer who placed an order, confirming that the order has been received and will be dealt with. Not rocket science by today’s standards, but adding in the ability to keep customers up-to-date is valuable because it could be the difference between keeping continuing business or not.
