The winners of the Hankook Tyre Design Challenge 2014 were announced at the Essen Motor Show in Germany today. This is the fourth time the competition has been held, and this year’s winner is Samir Sadikov, who submitted a ‘Dakar’ racing tyre concept. Runner up was Andreas Hartl with an intelligent “vent tyre” and third place was taken by Lucia Less with the ‘concept winter’ self-transforming snow tyre. These top concepts, which were selected by a jury of design and tyre experts and produced in prototype form by Hankook, will be on display for the rest of the Essen Motor Show’s duration.

James Russell Owen (24), a student at the world-famous Royal College Of Art (RCA), has won the Royal Automobile Club’s ‘Best of British Design’ Award . The UK’s Graham Holt has won this year’s Bridgestone MotoGP photo contest. Holt’s picture, which shows Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi riding on a total of two wheels, was singled out by the judging panel as it “managed to capture the spirit camaraderie and competition as well as the technical skill and prowess” of the two riders. Second place went to Germany’s Friedrich Weisse, while Marco Guidetti from Italy was voted third. The top 20 entries were on display during the 2014 Misano Grand Prix.

The winners of the global 2015 Michelin Challenge Design have been announced, with the tyre maker honouring 15 individuals and teams from the UK and nine other countries for their efforts. The winning designs for the latest challenge, which focused on the theme “Drive Your Passion: Engaging Senses, Soul and Emotion,” were selected from more than 1,100 registrants in 81 countries.
Groupauto’s latest AutoCare promotion, the “Fantastic Summer Giveaway”, generated “more than £321,000 of work for the garages in the network that participated,” according to AutoCare network manager, Maria McCullough. Almost 2,200 motorists entered the prize draw in the eight weeks of the competition, with the top prize of a Citroën C1 awarded to John Cooley, who booked his car into Earby Autos in Earby, Lancashire. A month from now, 40 electric racing cars will line up on the grid at the inaugural Formula E Championship race in Beijing. Each of the tyres that take to the track on 13 September will be fitted with identical tyres that were specifically developed for the competition. In a Michelin-hosted Q&A session, the company’s motorsport director Pascal Couasnon explains that the decision that all cars should run on Pilot Sport EV tyres was not simply a strategic option in technology terms; he says it was also an obvious choice.
Bridgestone’s mooted rejuvenation of its Firestone brand in Europe is partially focused on its motorsport heritage. One recent Firestone promotion will allow a couple from Toynton, near Spilsby, Lincolnshire, to experience the brand’s US motorsport involvement at first hand, winning a £10,000 Indianapolis 500 motorsport holiday. The sales campaign ran in a number of garages around the country to coincide with the brand’s efforts to reinvigorate itself and become a major force in the UK tyre market once more, Bridgestone stated.
