Montoya Takes Italian Grand Prix

Juan Pablo Montoya has won the Italian Grand Prix delaying Fernando Alonso’s attempts to become world champion. The Renault team of Fernando Alonso and Giarcarlo Fisichella took the remaining podium spots. At Monza, all of the top eight points scoring cars were running on Michelin tyres. The highest placed Bridgestone shod vehicle was Felipe Massa’s Sauber-Petronas, which came ninth. The results are good news for Michelin. Whatever happens during the course of the next Grand Prix race, Michelin is now mathematically assured of manufacturers/drivers championship victory.

Toyo Tyres Produce Slick Performance

Toyo claims to have turned conventional racing wisdom on its head, following tyre partner Nick Williamson’s recent driving performance. Williamson leads his class and is currently second overall in the Track and Race Saloon Car Championship Class B and has won five out of the six last meetings, running on Proxes R888 tyres.

Dunlop Becomes National MotorWeek Series Sponsor

(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s Dunlop brand has signed on as sponsor of the award-winning PBS automotive series MotorWeek, joining Stanley Works as the show’s second national sponsor.

Andy Traicoff, director of Dunlop, said the company added MotorWeek to its media mix to promote the 2005-2006 Dunlop Drivers Cup and to increase brand awareness for Dunlop Tires, already popular among performance car enthusiasts.

“Faced with increased competition for marketing dollars, we targeted MotorWeek to reach automotive enthusiasts who are likely to participate in racing, and to reach the ‘in-the-know’ driver,” said Andy Traicoff, director of the Dunlop brand. Traicoff said Dunlop added MotorWeek to help promote the 2005-06 Dunlop Drivers Cup and to increase brand awareness for Dunlop Tires.

MotorWeek is the original automotive TV “magazine series,” and has been on the air since 1982.

Avon and ATS Put Mini Up For Grabs

Customers who buy two Avon tyres from participating ATS Euromaster outlets will get the chance to win a new MINI Cooper. The car in question is worth £12,500 and comes in Chilli Red paintwork with Union Jack roof decoration and white bonnet stripes, plus of course a set of Avon Tyres. Five runners-up will receive a Sharp DAB portable digital radio, and all entrants will get a free Avon baseball cap. The competition runs from 1 August until 30 September.

Michelin Says F1 Tyre Supply Unbalanced

Michelin has revealed that an eighth team has approached Michelin looking for a Formula supply agreement. Michelin stated that since its return to Formula One it has noticed an imbalance of teams requesting its tyres, with seven teams currently using its products.

Pirelli Cable Business Sale Gets EU Approval

The European Commission has approved Goldman Sachs’ acquisition of Pirelli’s engery and telecomms cable businesses. The commission found that no company controlled by Goldman Sachs is engaged in the EU in the same markets as those in which the acquired businesses are active, and therefore will not impede competition. In addition the commission observed that the acquired businesses face strong competition from companies such as Corning and DrakaComteq.

Goodyear’s Assurance Get an IDEA

(Akron/Tire Review) Not only is it a top seller, but Goodyear’s Assurance TripleTred is also an award-winner, taking a Silver IDEA in the 2005 Industrial Design Excellence Awards.

Co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and BusinessWeek magazine, the Industrial Design Excellence Awards evaluates designs for innovation, aesthetics, user benefits, business impact and ecological responsibility. Products from Apple, Nike, BMW and Microsoft were awarded IDEAs in the competition, but the Goodyear Assurance was the only tyre honored.

Michelin: F1 Tyres Wrong Spec, Not Faulty

Having completed an internal investigation into why its tyres were not suitable for the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis, Michelin has found that its tyres were the wrong specification, rather than faulty. “The tyres were not intrinsically flawed, but were insufficiently suited to the extreme racing conditions encountered through Turn 13 of the Indianapolis circuit this year”, an official statement read.

GEA Golf Day Returns

The annual GEA golf day, held to raise funds for BEN, is returning to Staverton Park Golf Club, near Daventry, on Wednesday the 17th August. The competition is open to everyone and not just to GEA members. Federal Launches “Federal Motorsport”

Federal Corporation held its annual shareholder meeting in Chungli, Taiwan last week announcing the launch of “Federal Motorsport.” The manufacturer’s new tyre lines, are a result of “years of intense research and testing by Federal Technical Center (FTC),” said Jamie Ma, president of Federal Tire.

Two distinct series’ will make up Federal Motorsport – the street-legal 595 Competition Series and the exclusive, limited production FZ Combat Series for professional circuit use.

Autobody Repairer Scoops Gold

Andrew Blair, 22, from County Antrim, has scooped the UK’s only gold medal at the 2005 WorldSkills Competition in Helsinki, Finland. He won the medal in Autobody Repair, competing against 14 other countries including Japan, Korea, France, Germany and the US.
Mr Blair, who works for Mallusk Accident Repair Centre in Belfast, also achieved 7th place in the overall Competition (almost 700 competitors competed in total), which took place over four days at the end of May.

Yokohama to Support Four Teams at Le Mans

The Yokohama Rubber Co, Ltd, today announced that it will support five cars from four teams in the 73rd Le Mans 24 hour rance, due to be held 18–19 June at the Sarthe Circuit in France. The company will support the Courage Competition works team in the LMP1 Class and will supply specially developed racing tyres to two entries from the veteran French chassis constructor.

In the LM-GT Class, Yokohama will assist Porsche works team Alex Job Racing/BAM, Seikel Motorsport, and T2M Motorsports. Alex Job Racing/BAM will run on tires that it developed jointly with Yokohama. Seikel Motorsport and T2M Motorsports will use tyres based on the Super GT that Yokohama modified with especially for Le Mans.

John Tinham of Chelmsford-based garage, John Tinham Motor Engineer, has secured the title of Top Technician 2005. His name was announced at the Awards Ceremony held at Brands Hatch race circuit, hosted by sponsors Crypton, eXponentia, ReMIT and Vauxhall Trade Club.
